Hello RU-vidrs! I hope all is well with you and your families. This video covers lesson #2. In this lesson we discuss the following:
- Addressing proper starts and stops
- Left turns from a stop in 3 different lane positions
- Left turn with no space to move forward, which requires letting the motorcycle fall to the left and catching it with the clutch, throttle and rear brake
- Preloading the throttle, especially in turns
Remember, PRELOAD before every turning movement!
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

At 5:44 is a prime example of why I subscribed to this channel. Robert did not idle his motorcycle up enough and had to put his right foot down. He DIDN'T edit that out, instead he showed us it can even happen to him. What I took away from it was he did not get herky jerky. He just went back through the steps and proceeded forward with the exercise. Genuineness and integrity. Ladies and gentlemen this is but one example of how he made it to be a command level supervisor in the NYPD. Just sayin.

Another good video Robert. And it’s a refreshing reminder to see that even a seasoned Harley rider like Eric can drop his bike when we’re practicing these slow moves. And even after years of practice when it starts to feel like second nature, I’m sure you still try to push yourself to test your limits. I always look forward to watching your video’s. Valuable information that not only is going to help make us better riders but could potentially safe a life. 👍

HI Robert from Gold Coast Australia. I’m just few weeks from getting my L’s and just wanted to thank you for your attention to detail with talking and walking through every step of the way especially with sharp turns from stop. I dropped my bike 3 times getting my pre learners on my 2 day learners course but i was told it’s because I looked down. Up until finding ur channel I was scared to do the turns ftom stop in fear of dropping the bike. Learning how to preload with clutch and rear brake work has helped me 1000% to also trust and get my foot up. The other thing is we learn to stop with both front and back back brake even at low speed. My stops have been unstable and I’m now stopping only with the back brake when I’m slow. Yesterday I stopped every time without putting my right foot down 😀. I’m yet to do my right turn from stop sharper and I’m practicing this only on weekend. Then I’m going to be out of carpark. Yes I haven’t been confident to leave my house as I live in a very hilly suburb with steep hill stops everywhere and hidden traffic. I wanted to “be the boss” of my Harley Davidson XG500 before I conquered this and now I feel I’m ready thanks to your channel. Thank you because I nearly gave up. You have given me the belief and trust I didn’t have before. Thank you Robert. I’d be at all your practice sessions if you weren’t on other side of the world

This exercise is one I practice every time I get on my bike to leave the yard and when I get to work. At work we have a concrete pad along the building that is for motorcycle parking. the concrete is roughly nine feet wide from the building out. I pull up to the pad and make a left turn onto the pad right up against the building and then when I get to where I intend to park the bike on the pad I turn left on the pad again to park tail to the building. I find it very interesting that the exercises Robert covers are things I perform every day. They are just a normal part of my every day riding to work or around town. One of the most important things I have learned over my years of riding, is how important low speed skills are. Low speed skills will save your life.

I am loving your channel and seeing the difference between Australian and American techniques given that we ride on the other side of the road. I guess slow riding is the same no matter which side of the road with throttle pre-load, rear brake and head and eyes. I must ask though is it common for American Motorcycle Instructors to carry a gun whilst instructing? I suppose it is one way to ensure your students pay attention...

@@yechaskelbreier1655 I agree. I don’t need a law to force me either. However I believe that it will change in time. Just like with seatbelts. People becoming more aware not just of seatbelt safety, but not wanting to get summonses.

Hello sir, another great video. Question. This drill is a left turn, obviously part of it is the width of a parking space or approx. 9 ft, what’s the width of the lane your turning into ? Approx. 4 1/2 ft. ?? Thanks so much and keep up the good work. Peace.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 3 года назад
Thanks Steve! Wow you’re spot on! It’s approximately 4.5 to 5’. That could be adjusted of course to what ever is most comfortable for you. I do like to keep in mind that we’re on a motorcycle, so I didn’t want to make the lane we’re turning on 9’ as well. I want there to be a slight challenge. This way if you’ve practiced at a narrow distance, not only will you be able to do the same thing on the street, but it will also make your turns tighter so even when you have way more space, you won’t use it because you’ll be accustomed to making much tighter turns. 👍🏾😊

While I appreciate the need to use the rear brake only under 15MPH, what's the issue with having either (or both) foot down while waiting at a stop sign. Clearly, stay in gear and be ready to escape if necessary, but why the problem with right foot down post-stop on flat surface (or with rdrs on hill if applicable)? Thanks LT!
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 3 года назад
Hey Glen. It's just part of the training I received. Teaching good habits. Always covering the rear brake and ready to go. There really isn't anything wrong with putting both feet down once the motorcycle is stopped. I'm sure the real reason is the look of it. Imagine 50 motorcycles two-by-two stopped at a light. If all of them have one foot on the rear brake and the other foot on the ground, the uniformity of that looks way better than every body doing their own thing.😊

3:01 to 3:06 aah sorry dude but I must disagree from almost daily practice experience.. " 15 mph or less....forget about the front brake". That's the part I must disagree with. Your braking/stopping distance using only rear brake and properly AND at its best is still MUCH...much different than either front brake only OR properly combining rear and front brakes. Here is the part I meant though. If you are fast and hard on that rear brake only...even at 10 mph...you will, even if only for a very short time, lock up that rear...**depending on the bike and it's braking system** My 2019 cb500x is an example of this...stock braking system ftr. Now yes. If you freaking Bruce Lee speed and hard grab front brake... There is a real chance you will lock up the front wheel too. . Good peeps... Think of proper braking technique in two steps. Step 1. Fast on the brake BUT a very light amount at first Step 2 the very nano or split second you see and feel the bike dive forward...THEN you apply the rest of the needed braking power needed and that is 99 percent only meant for the front brakes.. Quote Greg Widmar of Motojitsu... As you're applying the front brake, you kind of slowly let off the rear. This is for fast proper emergency brake. Now how fast and how hard and deep you apply the front brake (as well as the best deepest braking amount on the rear BEFORE crossing that line of making the rear lock up)..is something to a reasonable extent that you'll need to experiment with on your own and your own bike. Like Robert, Jerry Palladino from RideLikeAPro, and Greg Widmar from mototjisu will tell you....always practice this stuff in an empty parking lot under slower speed conditions. Better to mess up and crash at much slower speeds and improve than highway and interstate highway speeds and you're not prepare through no real practice of sensible baby steps.

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle " 15 mph or less forget about the front brake". That's the part . *shrugs* Sorry good man, but you cover such a wide amount conversation/instruction that some noobs might take that part too much of an extent. They NEED To know they need not fear using that front brake. It's where over 80% of the stopping power is on 99% of all motorcycles. It's about teaching them proper form/application of that brake...that matters more/the most.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 2 года назад
@@motoryzen while traveling 10 mph, use of the front brake isn’t necessary. The front brake is for stopping. The rear brake is for control. I cover this more as the videos progress. I often state there’s always more than one way to do everything. However, while operating a motorcycle during slow speed maneuvers, it is definitely not advised to use the rear brake. That’s not my opinion.
