Hello RU-vidrs! A special hello to my fellow PRELOADERS! For those of you that aren't PRELOADERS yet, hit that subscribe button and become one. You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
This video covers how I feel you should park your motorcycle. Of course while parking your motorcycle, your feet should remain on the floorboards/pegs while the motorcycle is moving. All of the techniques that were implemented in exercise #2 and exercise #3 are used while parking your motorcycle. Do you see how all of these techniques tie into one another?
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

Great comment about parking on a slope. I recently made the mistake of mounting my bike from the right side, not thinking about the angle we were parked at on a slight downhill street. I didn't even have my left foot swung over the seat before I realized I was going down, and nothing I could do about it.

I very much enjoy your videos. You are a disciplined rider, an experienced rider. Your video topics are well presented, you carry your thoughts and demonstrate your topic with good execution. A seasoned rider, I would enjoy riding with you. I have ridden over 50 years. Never enough. But at the start of each ride season it is always good to prep your bike and yourself. Never ride above your skill level. Beware the show-offs...

Slow speed skills IMHO are way more important for everyday riding than racing skills! I mean really how important of a skill is being able to scrap your knee in a curve and how often in a real world situation will you need to? And I intend no offense to those that are able to do so because yes it does look cool! The vast majority of riding is dodging other moving vehicles and nonmoving objects in real world riding situations. Keep up the great work! Keeping in mind your preload and hold the load has really improve my confidence and helping to get over my anxiety about swinging and leaning my motorcycle. After all its the swerving and leaning that's sooo enjoyably cool about riding! Thanks again! And no doubt mastery of the friction zone is also very important in leaning a motorcycle down w/o dropping and wiping out in a curve.

Excellent explanation on how to park several bikes. About 4 years ago we were on a vacation in Stone Harbor N.J.. We went onto town to meet our family's at a restaurant for dinner. We parked just like that. We didn't notice the signs that said "no backing vehicles into parking space" or something like that. We happily paid or fines and went on our way. Just makes sense to back a motorcycle into a space especially with the pitch of the road toward the curb. They don't see it that way though.

Always a pleasure to watch someone do something they're good at. As a rider (and preloader) I know that those skills only come from hour after hour after hour of riding and practicing. And slow speed is where you separate the true motorcyclist from the other 98%. Even on the coldest of days, it's not too cold to practice slow speed in a nearby parking lot.

Nice video Robert. Instead of backing up to the curb or beginning of the parking space you might consider parking at the end. If two vehicles park on each side of you it's harder to see your bike if it's all the way into the space. I had my motorcycle tipped over once when I parked like that. The driver saw what they thought was an empty space and pulled in and hit the trunk of my bike and tipped it over. I now park out by the end and sometimes hang a high vis vest over the trunk or windshield. keep the great videos coming!

Saw a motor unit parking where the first guy pulls in and does the J turn so he's pointing out the parking space, but leaves enough room behind him so the following bikes can ride behind him and park on the other side of him. The following bikes do the same thing until the last bike is stopped. Then they all back up. Maybe its more like a drill team deal.

I’m 74 years old and ride a 2016 BMW R1200GSA. I’ve been practicing a lot since July when I got laid off and now retired. July I would rate myself 0 now probably a 4. One reason I say 4 is my right turns are worse than left. Your video on parking is helpful that will be my next practice session. One problem I have is on my bike I can’t get both feet flat on the ground. I’m on the balls of my feet. For that reason if there is even a slight uphill grade I can’t push the bike backwards so I have to park nose in. In any event I find your videos extremely helpful. Thanks. Yesterday I found an MSF box not being used. I could consistently do the left turn in 24 feet but struggle to do the right in 28.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle

Hey Ed. Thanks for watching and subscribing! That’s great to know that you went from a zero to a 4! If you keep watching my videos, you will learn that those damn left turns are still my Achilles heal. I feel like they always will be, so the only thing I can do is keep practicing them. That’s the same advice I have for you buddy!😊 If you park your motorcycle nose in, how do you get it out?

Hi Robert, That's all good in an empty or almost so lot. But when u just head to the store or mall etc, there's not gonna be an open slot like u showed. I know you know that, but it comes up a lot more than a ten space open lot with non parallel pull in style spots. Thanks again for the low speed instructions.

Hey Pete. Yes I know, but it still works. Instead of hugging the curb, you ride along side the cars and when you get to an open spot, make it happen!👍🏾

The one thing that drives me nuts about guys with no slow speed skills that can’t park as a group. We taught the same technique, but used both sides of the lead rider. We would signal left or right. It depended on the room of when re you were parking for the last riders. Half the time just like your video the lead rider would signal on right before pulling over, so the group knows. The lead did the turn to the 90° stopped position. Each rider came around the rear and lined up in a row from next to the lead and so on. A signal would would be given and the line backs together. Dismount and helmets all hung over the mirror on the right mirror facing to the left after dismount. Handle bars all turned to the left. If anyone messed that up, we had a dollar fund and you were fined $1.00. That was saved for our traffic Christmas party. All in fun, but kept things looking professional.

Good morning Lt. Thank you for going over parking. I definitely need to practice this on my bike. Sometimes I cannot park my bike, and my Husband comes to my rescue. I find parking a real hassle for myself, and have to be real mindful where I want to park. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn’t. Hopefully we will get to take a ride or trailer up there for some practice when my Husband retires. Enjoy your day! 😊

Robert, we do group rides and I am the front guy. Important to communicate with the rear guy. That is another thing you should go over. I have seen people pulling in bikes front end and have noticed it is a "pain in the but" for them to pull out, not to mention messing up the timing for all at depart. Can you show; pulling in to a spot with other vehicles in "the way"? [on a busy street or small town street] ( 8 - 10 bikes pulling in a small old town street or small city ) My crew practiced it and It is pretty cool "showing up" in formation at a place. G

@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 3 года назад
Hey James. Good question! You always look over your shoulder, of course, before making a turn. In this case, you ride along side the parked cars and you stop at the car before the parking spot. If the spot is to your right, stop the motorcycle, put your left turn signal on and when it's safe to do so, make the left turn and stop when your motorcycle is 90 degrees to the sidewalk and then slowly back up. Done!👍🏾

@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 3 года назад
Hey Tarl. I have issues with this. So I want my handlebars higher, but I don't want them above the fairing and I also don't want to have to move my mirrors because I think it looks like crap once you do that. Well at least on my motorcycle. 10" or 12" would keep my hands under the fairing, but it would be right in front of the mirror. I have a feeling it's not going to happen because I won't be able to get over moving the mirrors.

Okay heres my comment/question. I'm not a cop. In my six years of riding in NYC, 3 with a club, you can't pull to the curb like that (not enoughspacebetweencars), and even when you can you can't pull back out into traffic that far before backing into the curb or vehicle traffic will clip you or mow you down (especially when solo). Got any tips for starting the bike-park like parallel parking a car and ending up backed into the curb at a 90° angle?

I noticed most of the time you are mounting and dismounting on the high side why
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 2 года назад
Yes there are two reasons I mount and dismount my motorcycle from the high side. The first reason is from training. Officers usually pull over on the right side of the road and when doing so, we are trained to dismount the motorcycle on the non-traffic side for safety. The second reason is it avoids accidentally causing scuffs on my saddlebags or backrest or anything else that may be victim to a swinging foot. This also includes a passenger being on the motorcycle while you're getting on. The third reason and most relevant one for now is it's easier. My hips are bad so not having to swing my legs up and over the seat is very beneficial. Hope that helped.😊
