In this episode I show you the process of changing out your rear wheel bearings on a Prado 120/150 series, FJ Cruiser, GX470 or GX460. For the average joe it will still require using a workshop or mechanic, but you can save big dollars by doing majority of the labour yourself.

Great videos thanks. I have just done new rotors, calipers, pads, brake shoes on my 03 120. I did see a comment on another site that said to replace the rear bearings at 350-400k and thought about it but a toss up as a Prado mechanic I had used previously said if they are OK leave 'em be as the originals are superb bearings. BUT while fitting the left rear handbrake shoes I saw that the "shroud" with the internal cone shape on the actual axle that fits over the cone of the bearing housing had split in 2 leaving about 1cm of it to flop around. Maybe called the oil deflector? as seen in your video at 18:31 - the conical bit on the left is in 2 pieces so: a replacement axle, probably a used one, and new bearings both sides. As I'm a bit isolated without a vehicle I'll see if the local mechanic come and have a look see and advise.

Great video! Just one question, did the car make any sound/noise before the lights came out on the dash?
@offroadcrusader
@offroadcrusader 8 месяцев назад
Hey mate, no sounds unfortunately, a bit of a vibration at highway speeds. But I mainly picked it up from the oil leaking out of the seal and the movement in the bearing when you push/pull the wheel while its still on the car.

Excelente video Tood, if i need change de seal front the house bearing, i need a press? A recommendation if you allow me, at minute 14:33, the spring of the shoes would go behind the adjuster, leaving it like that, you could not adjust the handbrake without removing the disc

Hi mate, yes you will need a press to change the bearings as they are a sealed unit unlike older cars.

You should be using white lithium grease on your handbrake fittings, and not as much as you have used.

The only hard bit is getting that dumb spring in the handbrake, you didn't show me your technique.

I had to remove all this my self as the centra diff blow up or should say broke whatever remaining teeth I had on the crown wheel.

Haha yeah I'm surprised that I haven't done any rear diff damage yet, with the sort of 4WDing I do.

How much does the shop charged to replace it? I have to do mine and I’m just curious 🧐 Thank you
@offroadcrusader

Depends a lot on the workshop and the parts used, but I wouldn't expect change from $750 a side. Plus you will need new diff oil, possibly oil seal, and maybe handbrake shoes.

Cheers. I imagine it would be similar? I haven't looked much at the 200 series stuff yet.

They left a washer off between the bearing and retainer.
