Carlsen did say in the after game interview he's had food poisoning for a few days, so that could very well explain this. And I mean without that context it's not like leaving for a few minutes 3 moves in is an un-Magnus thing to do in the first place!

Didn’t Magnus say that he was dealing with food poisoning the day prior? At that point I would have expected him to go at some point. Specially early in the game to avoid breaking concentration later on.

Just about every chess player leaves during games. Outside of super tournaments it’s even worse, shankland for example used to bring perfect pushup handles into the playing hall - and while uncommon, it’s not that uncommon.
