Tacoma, Wash. - At around 8:00 p.m., Tacoma Fire was dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire in the 1600 block of Tacoma Avenue South.
While responding, a very large black column of smoke could be see all over the city.
When crews arrived, they found the two story structure fully engulfed in flames.
A second alarm was immediately requested and crews set up aerial ladders for a defensive fire attack.
Due to the proximity of several homes, crews deployed handlines in between the building on fire and the homes. Crews were able to safely protect at least three homes. No damage has been reported there.
No injuries and no reports of anyone inside the vacant building at the time of the fire.
Investigators are responding. It is too early to tell a possible cause or if fireworks played any role.
Tacoma Avenue is closed and it will remain that way for the night.
