The doctor had a needle stick injury to a vein, but it was a superficial scratch, not deep, and some blood fell on the scratch. I wasn't wearing gloves. My doctor told me there's no need for preventive treatment. I tested negative with fourth-generation testing after 6 weeks, and I'll repeat the test after 3 and 6 months. Am I safe? I'm worried.
@@DrMK7Update: The patient who tested positive on the rapid strip test when they came to the clinic due to high blood pressure of 23/11. We retested the patient with a fourth-generation ELISA test on three samples, and the result came back negative. (For your information, the patient only suffers from chronic hypertension.) What is your opinion, Doctor?
Hi Doctor, I got possible exposure when they were drawing blood for tests, I started about 43hours after exposure at 9:35am,the doctor had said with reydin side effects are better at night,she didn't want me to wait until night time to start so she said I must take one soon I get the meds and then another one at night then going forward I should keep taking it at night, when I got to the phamarcy they said if I take one in the morning I must continue taking one in the morning, so I have been taking 1 reydin at 9:35 am as pep, is this fine I'm just worried I might have misunderstood her. Am I supposed to take a double dose as the first dose as pep then continue taking 1 for the rest of the course?
Hey; sorry to hear about what happened, no I do not think you were supposed to take an initial double dose however I presume the doctor said that so that as you continue the medication the subsequent days when you will take at night you would have some drug level in your blood stream. So if you took in the morning then the next day for example you were to take at night you would have a period where you do not have an effective drug level in the bloodstream between that first morning dose and the next day evening dose as you wanted to take them at night to lessen the side effects. I hope that makes sense. Do speak to your doctor and pharmacists in person to get more details.
@@DrMK7 thank you for this, and taking time to respond, she did mention the side effects are better handled at night but I just needed to be sure there isn't a double dose rule I will speak to her again when they are back from holiday. Thank you, God bless you.
I started taking after 4hours of exposure and am now on day five but am experiencing the following syptoms: Fever sometimes Burning stomach and chest Lite headache And feeling like something is stuck on my throat.should i be worried please advice
usually the drugs in the first 2 weeks have some side effects but should not be out of the ordinary, if it helps try taking the medication at night before sleeping (same time)
I took pep ,finished and tested negative 1 week after pep,4 weeks after pep using determine hiv 1/12(3rd gen),then i tested at 6 weeks post pep using first line hiv 1/2 2.0 test kit,all negative..when shoulf i do my last test ,also how reliable are the tests i have taken so far.? Doctor please help am very anxious.
The tests are reliable you are most likely negative ideally the test you do after the pep is sufficient but you can wait a month and retake the test to be sure
@@DrMK7hank you doc for replying..what if I experience long term side effects or symptoms during and after pep,like mild face rash,white tounge and recurring muscle pains ? Also how should I calculate window period ,I.e after exposure or after last dose of pep?its such a confusing issue.
@@francismuiruri9223 don’t worry about the side effects too they will clear with time as your body flushes the meds out of your system, to be on a safe side after a exposure I recommend 90 days retest after the incident but the newer tests we are using now are more sensitive than older ones and the testing method is thorough

Doc i took pep and then after pep on 45 day after. exposure i took fourthgeneration lab tets came negative then again after week 9 i took rapid test fourth generation came negative should i take again on test at 12 week or should i stop cuz i learn that fourth generation test is conclusive at week 6 but why then test at 3 month is recommended ?
@@DrMK7 thankyou doc for answering i have lab test after 45 days of expsoure not 45 days after pep and the second test was rapid fourthgeneration which was after week 9 of expsoure not of pep so i should i stop worring now ? The anxiety i m in
@@sb8882 well it was the one of the biggest lesson learning experience for me the medicine itself do not have any sideeffects or issues for me but its just when you take first dose you might feel like vomiting or upser stomach but with time it goes away the main issue is the phycological impact that experience like that can have on a person so if anyone is taking pep stay in touch with your phycologist cuase you may develop hiv phobia which can make your life living hell cuz i m going through this now i have this fear of getting hiv i dont shakehands even and i know this is not.how hiv spread but still i get anxiety when ever someone touch me so it very difficult for me to live normally and well i m hiv negative so pep is very effective
@@andresbello417 you are on 3 drugs Trivacy 50 is dolutegravir, so essentially you’re on Tenofovir, Emtiricitabine and dolutegravir which are the drugs we can use for prep, in terms of transmission the chances are low and it’s good you started the prep early, if possible the source of your exposure if they are taking medication and are virally suppressed then you chance of infection is even lower, additionally the exposure you had if it’s a needle stick for example is it deep needle stick injury, did the need have visible blood on it, did it have a hollow bore there are many factors to transmission however do make sure you take the drugs everyday at the same time for 28 days then retest afterwards
