Another wood I would like to suggest (which I'm sure you must have heard of) is Zebrawood, also called Zebrano. Astronium graveolens. In my experience, it is easy to work with as a veneer, and cuts cleanly. Rated about an 1800 on the Janka scale. Again, I have never seen it used as a tonewood, but I think it would be lovely as a fretboard, or maybe stock for the sides of a guitar - I find that it is well suited to bending, and doesn't split.

A third and final suggestion (which again you must surely have heard of) is Movingui, also called Ayan or Nigerian Satinwood. Distemonanthus benthamianus. About 1300 on the Janka scale. I find it prone to split along the grain (at least the figured veneer I have loves to do that) and it can tend to resist polishing in the way that lacewood does, but I thought a bright yellow face might be your style. Also another wood I've never seen used as a tonewood, and there may be a reason for that beyond my understanding as a non-luthier.

Yes I have a nice set of this from Virgile at Blind Guitars, I’ve done true satinwood but not Movingui

An afterthought for you, Tom, in the rosewood-adjacent category: Tineo, or Chilean Apple (among other names, I'm sure). Weinmannia trichosperma. It often offers some of the same kind of figuring seen in Ziricote, for instance, with the coloring of some rosewoods. Really NICE chatoyance, with some specimens I have seen. About 1000 Janka.

Botanist and molecular plant physiologist here Have you ever considered showing a microscopic comparison between tonewoods, their respective densities, grains, and porosities? I think having some comparative molecular analysis would be incredibly interesting for a channel like yours. Not saying you'd have to take shots yourself, but there's likely sources online you can use for it.

Hello! I’ve talked about densities and elasticity quite a bit but never really dived into the microscopic realm. There are some useful resources online, I should include this info! Thank you for watching and commenting!

I'm not an affiliate but there's a company here in Portland OR called Goby that has a lot of great wood at pretty good prices. A lot of *walnut* in particular ;-) I've thought many times about putting together a few french polished walnut thinlines... Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge!

Hello Tom. Apologies for missing your call. We have the same job on different channels. UK/US times aren’t always friendly. Working on the dalbergia family for cu$toms as well as pommele sapele. A heavy weight but visually striking. MJ/ Dutch

Hey Tom, love your channel. Are you familiar with Zapatero? (Also called Rosita walnut, Suradan, Nanciton, Mascerey, among other regional names. Hyeronima alchorneoides.) It falls about 1700 on the Janka scale. I've never seen it used as a tonewood, but it's a popular veneer in the carpentry trade, because it looks similar to rosewood. I thought it might interest you to try.

OK, fair enough - you did provide a warning. But this is a little like inviting an alcoholic to meet you at a liquor store - of course we don't have to get in the check out line. But that Mun Ebony makes me crave a new guitar! Thanks, John Gig Harbor, WA
