Learn how to prepare continuous fabric strips for weaving rag rugs. Video also includes instructions on how to prepare strips on the bias.
Update 4.17.2014: It is unclear at 4:17 as to how many selvedges are sewn shut for creating bias strips. You will sew the three selvedge edges.
Instructor is Judy Larson of Larson Looms. Her studio is located at Color Crossing in Roberts, WI. www.colorcrossing.com

I have gone back to this video a number of times to refresh my memory on how to fold and cut a sheet for rag yarn. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Thank you. I have the braid aids, and will begin cutting when my sweetheart is off on a trip. The rug I plan is for a new home we're building, and our 30th anniversary. I have 3 kinds of fabric, and this tutorial will speed things along. Thank you, so very much.

For clarity - cutting on the diagonal - fold fabric and stitch the 3 open sides (4th side is fold).

Oooh. Cool... just like when cutting plastic grocery bags to make 'plarn'... Also works when making T-Shirt 'Yarn' from thrifted T-shirts. I've never even thought about doing it on the bias like that.

I did this video so that I wouldn't forget how to cut the strips after the class was over. I'm hoping to make more fiber related videos though. Especially how to dress a loom - I have a hard time remembering that process too!

I am trying to make 1/2 in strips for using in a knitting Nancy. The problem I'm finding is that the strips come apart at the seams. Any ideas on how to secure them? Maybe a double row of stitching? I love this easy way to make fabric strips and the instructions were pretty easy.

Hi Joy, If you tune in at 4:17 you'll hear how you sew the edges, and cut the "pillow case" of fabric to create the bias. At 7:00 you will see that you then proceed with cutting the strips just like at the beginning of the video. You might want to practice with a small piece of scrap fabric first to make sure you have the technique down before going with your project fabric.

Thanks for the great tutorial but I'm a little confused. Do you sew 3 sides first , before cutting on the bias? Meaning you would have 3 sewn sides and the fold ? Thanks.

Hi Willow here....how far is she coming down from the fold that she lays on the table and then brings then opposite end up 2 or 4 inches. Great idea. I listened more and understand she sews three edges plus fold...hence one big pillow. Great

What do you do if you want the entire piece to be cut on the bias?

I use these strips for knitting rag rugs. I like this technique. The video, though is very frustrating. The first part is pretty clear, except distinguishing where the selvedge edges are, and how it gets folded, The second, bias part, is unclear as to what gets sewn, i.e., are all three edges sewn together, plus the fold. Is the bias piece as long as two squares of the fabric folded, then all other edges sewn into a pillow shape, and the diagonal, bias cuts made to open it all out to cut using the straight strip method in the first segment of the video. Both methods shown are still very useful for those of us using the strips to knit, crochet, or weave with. Is there other notes available for these instructions. The bias strip method is magic.

Another question beyond this origami, is how do you sew the various seams so that those of us who use a bias tape tool, don't have a hard bump at the sewn edges. I have used a fell seam but is is too bulky and causes problems getting caught in the tool at the seam.

I miss the beginning each time. I’d it just a folded rectangle or a stitched tube? Please explain. Thank you

I did watch and re-watched the video at 4:17 and 7:00. However, I must be missing something. I think I sew together the selvage sides together, but can't determine if I sew edge 1 together? Basically, I'm asking do I have one edge not sewed. I would have the fold and then the selvage and then edge 1?

Thank you for your question, LaRita. I believe one side is open, but I'll check with the instructor and post the reply when I hear back.
@lacyhouse1

All 4 sides are closed up. Sew the three selvedge edges and have a fold on one side. You raised a good question, so I'll put this explanation in the video description.

Is this used for making strips on the bias for rag rug or was this another project.

Does it have to be machine stitched? I don't have the ability to do that.

What is the advantage to having bias cut strips?
@lacyhouse1

I’m sorry, but I don’t know. I was just chronically the class so I could remember how to do it again. LOL. Hopefully someone else can comment as to the advantage?

The strip will be softer when it is bias cut, it will make thicker weav (better). Also the colour effect is very different to compared to strait cut (multicolour fabric). Thus one can get like many colours if one fabric is bias cut and the other similar strait cut. Finnish poppana is always bias cut. Google poppana /look Pinterest. Poppana weft is about 1cm wide.

I don't see why couldn't use a regular scissors and just cut as straight a line as you can.

I always use a coupon at joann fabrics if I can. They are worth it if you do a lot of rotary cutting when making your own strips& squares.

most people found your instructions not clear like you have not shown us how you have joined the fabric also when you are doing the diagonal cut there is seam which your using as a guide line dont understand where the seam was stiched you should be more clear and show how you have joined the bedsheet.
