Kenz...I loved the opening scene! You are SO talented! The time lapse of the planets, the reflection of the sunset in the window, the music and on and on....I really appreciate all that you do to make it such a joy to watch. Spencer...You are NOT a procrastinator! If you were, you would never have accomplished all that you have in the past few years....I mean, you built your family a HOME with your own hands for goodness sake! You are built like a superman and you have proved that you are as strong as the man of steel when it comes to getting things done. I hope you have plans to keep us, the viewing audience, with you once everything is finished. We all really look forward to your posts and find encouragement and wonder in everything you do. Watched this 12 days ago and been hankering for a new vid since, I do understand they have two human babies and two furbabies to look after while trying to build a home, but when you're used to regular vlogs showing the building progress and beautiful beau's cheeky antics and chatting, it makes you (or at least me) rather antsy wondering if everyone's ok

I suggest you add "self regulating heating tape or cable". It goes by many names and has many types but this would be the best for searching the product. It's an electric heating cable that you attach to your pipes. The cable is filled with metal strands and the cable jacket is sensitive to heat. When your pipes get to freezing temp, the cable jacket shrinks, causing the electrical strands to join and produce heat. Once the pipes are heated the jacket expands and no electricity is used.
@young11984
@young11984 2 года назад
We call it heat tape or heat trace and should have a membrane between the plastic and the trace to avoid melting and distribute the heat wider, metal/copper pipes it doesn’t matter though

Put a small electric base heater in pump shed, set temp at 40f. I would also get your skirting around base of house for wind protection to help in heating home and keeping water lines from freezing under home. Build a simple fence around septic pipes and aeration system, simple fix and keeps animals out. Great video.

I'd be inclined to put a 6" wrap of stainless steel or tin around the bottom of the pumphouse to prevent mice and snakes and wrap the pipes with either pipe sleeves or electric heat tape. I'd also wrap insulation in plastic and stuff the moon cutout for winter. But then I live in the frozen north. We get minus 40's. Maybe build a wood box around the pipe by the fence so if the dogs run into it again, it won't be the pipe they run into.
@jaditelady173mary4
@jaditelady173mary4 2 года назад
I would consider wrapping those pipes the dogs broke with pool noodles too. I would hate to clean up that crap if those pipes froze too. With climate change I think we are going to see more erratic weather...not just this 10 year vortex thing. As a Northerner, better to take the time now to over insulate now and not have to worry about it later.

Just a thought: The concrete slab probably is the 'cold radiator' in the pump house. Insulating the slab imo would make a huge difference. Storing some heat that is expelled from the house by the ventilation system [heat-exchanger] and pumping it into the pumphouse would help.

You've made the pump house SO nice and warm and cozy for the mice! :-) Might I suggest some peppermint oil in there? You can put it on cotton balls and place them on the floor. Mice really don't like that smell and since they can get into spaces way smaller then you would think, they will find there way in. The oil should do the trick and isn't repulsive like moth balls

Good idea to get that stuff done, even a small leak of cold air can make it bone chilly. I live in Iowa and we got hit just a couple days ago, it wreaked havoc on our electrical system. It's a long story but to keep it short, we had (post edit) We had our furnace and our electrical breaker panel go bad. (End of edit) Also two space heaters went bad due to surges in the electrical system oh and I also lost a heating pad, may they rip. I hope you two look into getting some circular wind turbines for your roof (they look like a globe), I bought three myself and yet to use them, but it will supplement your panels when they cannot be used due to no sun...I got my three dirt cheap off of amazon for just under $400 for them at 600 watts each if I am not mistaken...plan to add solar to this set up as well, these are for our RV...

Take you a string ..... Maybe a needle and thread and string together 5-6 cotton balls. Dip the cotton balls in oil of peppermint. Hang the string in your pump house 6-12 inches from the floor. Mice are highly allergic to oil of peppermint. They won't come back. Makes the area smell good too. We put it in all of our storage buildings. Actually , in most I just saturate a cotton ball and toss them in the corners of the buildings. Works good in the feed room in the barn too. Resaturate the balls once a month or so.

Yes, get prepared. Weather in DFW expected to be 21 degrees in evening Jan 1, 2022. Welcome to the New Year. It is 73 degrees now 12/30. The children are just beautiful. Spencer Jr. needs a blanket/pallet on the floor. To play with toys, stretching and preparing to crawl. Mom needs a break. Your home is beautiful. Trim almost done. Don't forget shims? A Very Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family.

Build a little wooden fence around the pipes where the dogs broke the pipe and they will not be able to hit it anymore. Great job on the house. It looks amazing.

Where is the kid going to school and learn how to live in a society?
@karienrichards8613
@karienrichards8613 2 года назад
@@abz124816 The first "society" in a kid's life is his home. And what better home can a kid possibly live in, than this wholesome, loving family, where Mommy and Daddy are fantastic role models, always at home, busy building their home and future, while the kids are allowed to "help" and play with? They are growing up in a better place than most other children around the world. I cannot believe that someone who watches this channel can ask such a rude question..

My dad would always just run a drop cord and put an incandescent 75 watt bulb in the well house if the temps were going to be below freezing for a few days. It was brick with a framed roof and shingles but that little bit of heat trapped in there always kept things plenty warm. You could also put a remote thermometer out there to keep an eye on it from the house.

Make sure all of your pipes are on the “warm side” of the insulation. I believe in the video it looks like you put insulation both behind and on top of it for that little “extra” but if you didn’t put insulation behind the PEX piping, then they’ll freeze.

Paddy Wagon - I thought the same thing, but then thought maybe they cut the insulation so it would go behind and in front of those pipes that were closer to the wall.
@kschleic9053
@kschleic9053 2 года назад
Agreed, it is an easy fix. Just slit the insulation from the Inside where the pipes are, and pull them up the the surface.

Maybe wrap the pipes also with some type of insulation like a hot water tank blanket or wrap. Happy 2022 New Year.

You guys have a beautiful little girl and a very handsome little boy with a lovely home to watch them grow in. I would like to start the vote for HGTV or some magazine to feature your special home featuring the fact you two did almost 100 per cent of the work. I have been here from day one and I have seen very little of the work done by others. You guys even drew your own plans. You can truly say we did it our way! There is so much more you want, a screened patio/bbq, a garden, more landscaping, make the barn prettier, so much. And I for one hope you take all of us along. Love ya'll and we all are so proud of you as ya 'll should be so proud of yourself. Bet your Grandpa is very proud.

One of those electric oil filled heaters set at its lowest setting on those freezing nights will do wonders in a small insulated space like that. I put one under my house and close up all the vents and it stay well above freezing especially during that polar vortex we had last year.

Your trimming and caulking looks great! I remember installing baseboard over new laminate flooring and trimming the stairs in our first home and it seemed like a never ending, exhausting project. It took weeks to complete but man it looked so beautiful and was so satisfying when it was done. My wife and I still talk about it from time to time. Anyway, great job!

The opening scene was really awesome! The trim looks excellent...and yes...trimming it does make it look bigger :) One suggestion about the pump house...you may need to place a heat source inside it...you can use many different kinds...even a 60 watt incandescent bulb would work.

Spencer if you buy a box of mothballs and keep the box slightly opened the pump house the critters including snakes and mice will avoid it. We use this human method but don't put the mothballs loose because they could get eaten by the dogs or picked up by the kids so we just open the top of the box and keep it out of reach. In that small of space it will be strong enough. Snakes avoid mothballs so maybe spread some in the barn. I've heard of people attaching/stapling plastic strawberry pints the underside of the home and adding a handful of mothballs to each basket to keep the critters away from their home and underside of their home. Our friends attached 8 baskets up close to their house and used a few boxes of mothballs and they never saw another mouse in the house and no more snakes so it works. You need to replenish the mothballs every year but it's dirt cheap. 😊 Happy New Year!! ❤❤🙏🏼

If you haven't done this yet... You could run a back-up portable electric heater. Tethered to a thermostat... Not sure if you have power/ electrical going to that pump house, but you could add heater as a way to further protect pump house. Around the door way of pump house. You could add a thin layer of sheet metal over the wood trim, around the door... That would deter/or keep the mice from chewing vulnerable spots along the bottom of door... As for the dog's bumping into the pipe near the fence line. You could court the location off by simply installing 4 wooden, or metal posts. Make a hinged enclosure across the off-set center point of the 2 posts that would bump out from the main fence, and elevated box location... Put some kind of hinged lockable access gate when you need to work on it.... Everthing is really looking good... From our family to yours... Have a Happy New Year... 🙏😎👍🇺🇸
