After finally taking delivery of the Grenadier I am off for about 4000kms of mainly remote outback Australia . I will test the car as an overland vehicle with a rugged pod style camper on both sealed and unsealed road, tracks and across country. In this video I show how I have prepared the car for this adventure.

A real shame you had to do all the electrics just make the trailer work as advertised, but a great job there. Looking forward to the trip report! Enjoy!

Hi David, yes not really "Aussified" for towing. Thanks for watching and commenting , John

Thank you for the details. I bought my Grenadier partly because I wanted the option of the factory fitted auxiliary battery. Very interesting and disappointing that you had to also use a battery pack. I will contact Ineos and ask them how to fix this issue in the UK. Enjoy your trip and your Grenadier and safe travels.
@markh6676
@markh6676 Год назад
It will all work, you just need to add the Ctek 250SE to the system, Ineos even left space for it. They obviously decided to leave it out so owners had a choice of what to add based on their usage case. e.g. some might prefer to use a Redarc 40A instead for quicker charging, the Ctek is only 20A
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
Yes I remain confused by the setup. In Australia, auxiliary batteries are common but connected in a different way whereby extra lights , fridges etc. are powered only by the 2nd battery leaving the starter battery strictly for vehicle starting and functions. Adding Ctek 250SE and mounting plate (if you can get one) for about $500 Au seems to be a solution although there is still some troubling advice coming from Ineos and Ctek about this (expensive) option. I will also be trying to get comfortable in my mind about the solution before I proceed with adding to or altering the setup. However I don't want to have to cart a 3rd battery around. Thanks you for watching and your comment, John

Thanks again for the helpful video. Im looking at getting the StoneStomper as you have for my IG. Can I ask what bar length you choose and which bar mount you optioned? What is the size of that gap between the rear bar and the StoneStomper and does that enable rocks to get flicked through? Cheers.

Hi John, awesome set up and the videos are super helpful. Had my Trialmaster for about 8 weeks now. Love it...generally :-) Few issues including blowing up the towing module the first time I connected my race-car trailer - lights flickered and then went out and a rather nasty burning smell in the INEOS! Apparently INEOS wired the 13 pin plug differently to other European manufacturers (never had an issue with Audi, Porsche or BMW with same trailer). Wiring issues still continue but that's another story! Quick question - is your trailer set up for 24V power supply as my understanding was that NATO plug was 24V? Cheers Richard
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors 11 месяцев назад
Hi, Richard,Yes, they tricked us with that 13 pin plug... blanked out 3 pins for some unknown reason. The Nato plug is 12 V, its set up for a rear winch so it runs through relay and is operated by the 500A switch which also livens up the front winch, only works in P or N from memory. easy fix is to swap the cable to the other side of the relay (accessible via the small panel on the RHS cargo area) this leaves the NATO plug always live and still fused .Thank you for taking the time to comment, John

Hi John, I am preparing mine in advance for an extended trip next year. I found that the 12 volt cig type outlet can be switched on for the fridge using the overhead switch marked Power. My van has everything powered from batteries and I intend to use the NATO plug in place of an Anderson plug. It will not be a problem on my setup to have the power interrupted as I don’t rely on it to run the fridge in the van. I may have to install a 50 amp fuse rather than the 350 amp one though as I don’t want to burn the van down if there is a fault. The Trialmaster setup is almost ideal for my setup. I am left looking for a solution for the radio aerial roof mounted and the rear view camera. Look forward to seeing you on the road.
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors 9 месяцев назад
HI Graham, yes you can use the cig lighter but it is run from the ignition battery. I also use the NATO plug with an adaptor to an Anderson plug although I needed to swap into the live side of the really in the cargo area so that it was constantly live. It is tricky to get the aerial wire up to the roof but not impossible, I ran a new cable to run a lightbar that I wanted connected to my high beam and brought it up behind the the existing power socket. Camera was a bit easier there is a rubber grommet under the rear cargo mat that I used to get out. Where are you headed? I too hope to catch up on the road, John

Thanks for posting this helpful video. When you switched to the 1 inch DO35 pin, did you need to drill a larger hole in the stock Grenadier tonque, or did you replace the tongue as well? Other AU owners have said that the hole in there stock Grenadier tonque was just a tad too small and needed to be drilled out larger to fit the 1 inch DO35 pin. Thanks.
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
Well that is true, I happened to have an old 1" cone shaped sanding stone that I put on the end of the drill and ran it through very easily. It's only a poopteenth tight and I thought it may have been a one off.Thanks for pointing that out. John
@etbandit
@etbandit Год назад
@@cannyoutdoors Thanks for the reply. I took my hitch tonque to the local caravan shop to see how tight a fit the 1 inch DO35 pin would be, and it actually popped in with a firm push. Might be some variation in tolerances for the hole drilled. Safe travels.

Enjoy Normanton, Karumba and Burketown and maybe Lawn Hill Gorge down to Mount Isa. Great vid. Any issues with hooking up the trailer in terms of the rear doors/wheel and the hitch? I doubt a TREG hitch would work with getting the pin in without having the rear doors open??
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
On my trailer can't fully open the big rear for if the trailer is straight on. Slightly articulating the trailer to the left allows the door to open. Safely clears the DO 35 hitch but don't pull the handbrake on and then open the door or there will be swear words. John

A bit disappointing about the aux power and tow bar especially since I contacted my dealer about the tow bar saying that the NAS towbar listed is North American spec and would the tow bar confirm confirm to Aust standard and the answer was yes . I had a similar set up with the fridge battery in my freelander 2 using a thumper pack as there was no place for an aux battery
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
Totally agree with you. The whole auxiliary battery and tow setup is foreign to us in Australia. As we are supposed to be one of the biggest markets for the Grenadier would have been nice to have our needs considered a little more. hopefully this will occur in the future. Cheers John

Another great video. Surely you could have just connected your fridge to the consumers terminal on the 120S? Which is what I plan to do. I am adding the D250SE ($290 on sale at Kings, sorry) but only to add solar input capacity not to protect the starter battery which the 120S can already do.
@markh6676
@markh6676 Год назад
The 120S won't charge the auxiliary battery because the smart alternator drops to 13.xxV 20mins or so after engine start, the Smartpass then shuts down. Even if you connect the ignition wire on the Smartpass it will only trickle charge with the 13.xxV. It needs the 250SE to create a sufficient load on the starter to signal the alternator to ramp up to 14.4-14.6V. The Smartpass can't create the load as it can't boost the charge like the 250SE can.
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
Hi Andrew, some real advice from Ineos and some wiring diagrams would real help sort this confusion. As I am sure you are aware there is still a lot being said about this. I am pretty sure I will be going with the D250SE also as it seems necessary to properly charge the 2nd battery. Where are you getting a mounting bracket from?
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
Thanks this seems to be the requirement, I appreciate your comment, John
@markh6676
@markh6676 Год назад
Thks again John. If you get a chance could you measure the clearance required for the large rear door to open to 90 degrees, i.e, distance from the DO35 pin to maximum arc of the door swing. I suspect my jockey wheel on the Aframe will foul the door opening fully.
@cannyoutdoors
@cannyoutdoors Год назад
Hi Mark, Not sure exactly how to measure what you need. The distance from the pin to the arc of the big for is 850mm but it is hard to judge exactly where that arc point is as the distance increases the further the door opens but I reckon that's close. The pin sits 115 out from the numberplate and the door clears the pin by 60mm. Hope that helps let me know if you need more. John

Well heaps better than most lighting provided on say standard Ford Ranger. I haven't done a lot of night driving as yet but have a feeling I might like a bit more (age.. you know). Would consider the roof mounted bar but I am confused by the lighting pre wiring as offered, seems it does not link up to high beam and is therefore not useful or legal here. Still some investigation to do on this one. John
