I loved the first six volumes of the Foxfire series, but it really is important to check the contents of each volume, so you'll get the most out of them. (The phonetically-written accounts were my favourite part of those books, too.)

The foxfire books are from my part of the world. I've been trying, since "prepping" got popular, that instead of putting so much money into all the "gadgets" learn how the early 1900s rural people lived. 😁 The first foxfire book I saw was in 1972, I was 18 and I thought, "Why would anybody need these?" 🤣🤣 (I'm so backwoods hillbilly)

My 10-yr-old grandson takes blacksmithing. He loves it. I’m impressed with the things he’s made. My 9-yr-old granddaughter got an Ashford weaving loom and is making a shawl, she also likes to forage with me to make medicine. Now the 7-yr-old likes to do paper making and book binding. They keep me busy and I love seeing them develop skills.

I've had Carla Emerys book for 30 years...got the new one a few years back. I have the entire set of Foxfire books and some of my Appalachian relatives contributed as well. My grandmother, born in tucker Co wv in 1901, gathered her medicine from the forest. So many things I wish now I'd asked her.

I had that whole foxfire set when the kids were little. Used them for homeschooling. Found them at a resale shop for $1 each. Donated them to library when I got in a cleaning snit. Did the same sort of thing with my cast iron collection. The ‘90’s were a wild and stupid time, man. I’ve since replaced both collections…at enormous cost. Live and learn.

Heidi, I'm so excited to here about the Foxfire books! When I was young, living in NC and raising my young children, I befriended an "old timer" who was a logger and a hog farmer and extremely knowledgeable about the old ways. In fact, back then in the 1980's, he recommended to me a book called Foxfire. I didn't pay close attention, but I remember the name of that book. This is the first time I have ever heard about Foxfire since the early 1980's from my old timer friend. This is amazing. It's like his spirit has come back to urge me to buy these books to learn more about the old ways of the self sufficient life. Thank you!

I think the first time I came across the Foxfire series was in high-school, as it's been mentioned by old-school prepper/survivalists since the 80s. Back then, though, the series was probably only six volumes. The latter volumes, for me, are nice-to-have, but not as practical.

My husband and I scraped together the funds to start our prepping and homesteading skills library way back in the 1970's. We thoroughly enjoyed them and the information we learned through them served us well our whole married life. Unfortunately, the scandal surrounding the Foxfire books took the wind out of our sails about that series. Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living is a masterpiece! I've enjoyed the Old Farmer's Almanac for many years, too.

On your recommendations I bought the Country Living book and it is AMAZING….I also bought a copy for my friend for her birthday and recommended it to others. I can’t say enough about it. There is also a vintage book worth keeping an eye open for called “Back to Basics” . It is a hardcover book put out by Readers digest in and around the early 1980s. I found another copy through marketplace and purchased it for that same friend for this years. Birthday present. Well worth hunting for

I have an early edition of The Encyclopedia of Country Living and love it. I remember watching Carla make bread on a TV show years ago where she put everything into the recipe but the kitchen sink lol. I regrettably gave up the majority of my back-to-the-land books when we moved up to Oregon 20 years ago, but I still have old copies of Storey’s Basic Country Skills and Reader’s Digest’s Back to Basics. I remember the Foxfire books very well. I was a home-birth midwife in California during the ‘80s and ‘90s so appreciate you mentioning the relevance of learning those and other medical skills. I was just reading about Ukrainian women birthing in basement shelters and wishing I could be there to help.

Does your copy of Back to Basics include a section on predicting weather based on clouds and how to make a doll? I remember that content in the version my grandma owned, but it’s not in a newer version that I bought. The old versions are so pricey online so I don’t want to buy an old one just to find out that it doesn’t contain the content that I remember.

@@username00009 Yes! I have the second edition from 1981 and just checked. On page 415 there’s a paragraph called “Learn to Read the Language of the Clouds.” On page 388 under “Fun and Fascination with Homemade Toys” there are instructions for making an apple-head doll and a rag doll, and a corn-husk doll on page 395. I’d forgotten how packed this book is with information!

Over the years, way before we had our property in rural Michigan, I bought gardening, self sufficient and prepping books. We have a volume called Back to Basics published, I believe, by Readers’ Digest Book Club. We have owned it for years, but every now and then I see copies of it in the thrift shops. It has basic information on butchering techniques, cabin construction, farming methods, food preservation, gardening, etc. From time to time I have used it as a reference. Therefore I pack it when we move instead of ditching it.

I learned sooooo much by finally reading the ENTIRE KJV Bible at age 64 as it was a goal of mine well before I die and I never knew anyone that had done that before in my circle of Christian friends & family. I learned about everything they planted, ate of all kinds of foods & herbs and even a recipe for Holy Oil also referred to perfume. Now I'm making unleavened bread & adding coriander seeds while in the same breadth being a better person which we all can be.

Heidi, I have been looking at Goodwill and Thrift stores for books. I have found several and a couple cookbooks, gardening and other prep type books but none that really I love. Thank you. If you recommend it I trust it. So much to do and get. Seeds and books are my concentration now. In zone 6 and maybe rain/snow tomorrow. Next week all in 70s! Just crazy. Im going to order a couple of them. My ancestors always planted their gardens after Easter. This is great information. My ancestors were Black Sioux Indian nation but they really put up food! I remember sitting on my MOMMOW counter at age 4 watching her can and "helping" her make bread! Lol. Thank you. This was a GREAT video.❤❤🌞🌞Susun🌞❤

My sons will be moving at what I feel is an awful time midsummer in the middle of garden season we will do our best to save and plant and things in containers that can be moved I'm sure there will be losses but that is the timing that God has given us this time. I am trying to save up the money to buy the two sons that will be living together a set of the Foxfire books I have not read them but I've heard from Danny and Wanda and from you and from other people that they are excellent and I think they would be of benefit to them. Thanks for your video today it was very good, I will have to look into the prepping 101 book I think they're a little beyond that but it may be a good base for them to have. I hope I am around here forever but I am 68 or going to be in June so I can't guide them by the hand forever and I would also like to leave them important information and some that I don't even know

I had the whole series of the Foxfire Books and read them until they fell apart. I am saving up to buy another set. I think what I liked the most was they taught a lot about the old ways. I also loved the history. In the last several years I am going back to the old ways as much as possible. My grandparents taught us to repair what is broken, make what you can, mend clothing and socks with holes in them, grow a garden and can what you grow. My grandmother taught me how to hand wash clothes and sweaters and that alone has really come in handy. One of the things I did with one of the Foxfire books was toy making. I made a lot of toys for kids and they live what I made for them, awesome books,

I have a problem. I live in a bi level hose with no basement. Our house gets pretty warm in the summer and although I would love to can I don’t think it would work out. Do you have any ideas for safe food storage? What kinds of foods I should look into making or buying?

I think your canned goods would be fine, it is more the high fat content foods that are not canned you would have to worry about more
