Where American values switched from hard work, and unity of purpose to search for a greater future, to becoming a self-indulgent and consumption obsessed culture. He was stating renew the spirit of American values and create of purpose of unity to work together a combat these issues. People were distancing themselves from government which was posing a threat to our republic democracy. And how self-indulgence will never satisfy our longing for meaning. This was his response to the media and Americans losing confidence for the future. The confidence is what created America. The confidence in searching for a greater future for our children was lost along with the unity of purpose. America was built on the sole foundation of people who had a unity of purpose to search for something greater, aka freedom and worked together to combat the issue . So instead of doubting about the future, Shift that energy into creating a unity of purpose to work hard and search for a greater future for our children. But people didn’t want to hear that because it was true, society was built on consumption, human identity was defined and valued by what we own, not what we do. That is why there was a loss of unity of purpose to search for a greater future. They didn’t want to hear the criticism of how self indulgence and overconsumption had led people to value their lives by what they own rather than whAt they do for society and what purpose they serve so the people continue to doubt the future rather put their value and purpose in searching for a greater future. But people were just separating themselves further from government rather than creating a unity of purpose to combat these issues and create a better future. Now he was one of the worst presidents but he provides some truths about American society needing to change in order to progress.

All the latter stuff happened after he left office. Remarkable how long he has lived after his Presidency ended. He might even live to see the first post-Boomer President.

Was extremely intelligent, cared deeply for America, but lacked the political skills to make things happen. In my opinion, one of the Greatest Americans of all time, but definitely one of the worst Presidents of all time.

He also was President in a very difficult time. There were a whole lot of crises that just came to a head during his Presidency, such as the energy crises, Iran having a revolution, etc. He probably would have been a better President if he had been elected in an easier time.

Mr. Rogers was all those things too. Neither man was fit to be President. Gov. Carter outkicked his coverage. People were sick of Nixon and Vietnam and corruption and voted for change. Carter was that change.

50% of a President's legacy is his political skill and character. The other 50% is what cards you get dealt by the world, economy, events, wars, crises etc. Carter didn't get much luck on the latter and was probably too honest and smart for his own good.

I actually read that it was very well received in the short term even giving him a bump in the polls. It was days later thanks to the actions of political enemies, and the malaise moniker catching on in the news cycle that the speech's perception turned negative. It appears it has mostly remained that way since.

He was honest? The dude is saying that we should all just put up with the mess he made. We just shouldn't be so materialistic and be angry that he made Americans more poor. We should just walk more because gas is so expensive. Thankfully Reagan FIXED all of those problems, so Americans didn't have to be poor, cold, and walk to work.

Real wages stagnated even as productivity and GDP rose dramatically (a result of aggressive QE). In popular cultures now he is remembered as the destroyer of USSR, but in the history books years down the line he might very well be remembered as the destroyer of USA.

And as for those who criticize him I say this: The upturn in the economy had its roots in programs Carter already had implement at the end of his presidency but Reagan got the praise for them when they came into effect. And let's not forget that Reagan's "steroid injection" economy led to the infamous 1987 Black Monday stock market crash. As for the Iranian hostage crisis. Was he supposed to do what the masses wanted? Start a large scale invasion of Iran? Did people forget Vietnam that fast?? And to start a war right in the middle of an economic recession? To do what? Installing another vassal king like the Shah who nobody liked anymore in Iran? To all those who claim:"Reagan ended the Soviet Union. False. The Soviet Union ended the Soviet Union. It was already in serious economic trouble by the mid 70's and economic experts in 1979 predicted it would last another 10 years before it would collapse. It was going down with or without Reagan. The whole system was rotten to the core simply couldn't sustain itself. Gorbachev's reforms were simply "too little, too late". History will record that those years were a crossroads for America and they choose the sign reading "the easy path".
