Listen, if you hate pretend play, then please know you're not alone. This is probably the number one concern I hear from parents when it comes to play. In this video, I share some things to consider if you're in this boat as well as practical tips on setting boundaries when it comes to play. Dealing with endless hours of play when you'd rather be doing something else in order to prevent tantrums & meltdowns is NOT the goal of play.

I never enjoyed playing with my nephew when he was a child. I found it extremely boring.

You’re amaaaazing lady. Thank you for validating the hard feelings that often give us mom’s guilt and also giving us tools to help us through these moments!! I appreciate you so much and feel so happy I found you!

Thank you for so much for this advice. I realised I missed the scheduling piece. I've been giving that quality playtime but my boy doesn't know when to expect it. Which is why he asks (and asks and asks!).

I feel like when I try to let my child take the lead she’ll say “play mom” like she’s wants me to entertain her. HELP!

🎉 I try to on Sunday. It’s boring when I’m tired but it becomes fun 😄😆. We fly our paper planes ✈️ and go to the park. He rides his bike and I follow on foot for exercise 🎉

My daughter is intense! She doesn’t accept the times I don’t want to play. She’ll force the issue and cry/cling.

So helpful! Can you do more videos that show examples of language during pretend play & what that would look like? Like when they’re playing with dolls or the Little People or cars etc

Parents should not "play" with their kids....that's what they have friends for.

Play is the primary way children communicate and build connection. It’s part of developing a healthy relationship with our children. More parents would benefit from communicating with their kids in their language instead of solely expecting them to communicate in our language. I’ve worked as a child therapist for years and I can say I see a huge difference when parents start to regularly implement play with their children.

🎉😮That’s horrible! What parent doesn’t play with their kids on the weekends at least! I try to on Sunday. It’s boring when I’m tired but it becomes fun 😄😆. We fly our paper planes ✈️ and go to the park.
