A cool detail is how this Predator had a more primitive version of what they wear in the 70s and 80s, I especially like how they seemed to have learned from this Predator and they got new face shields and helmets that couldn't be easily removed. Whomever was in charge of costume and characters design did a really good job.
Well I mean you're kinda right, but the predators have a ranking system, this predator was a young blood, so it basically had the best set of weapons for stage 1😆, while a veteran predator has the best of stage 10 weapons
I learned this from one of AVP novel. It's Yautja hunting ritual law to match the quarry, weapon for weapon. The Braves were using bows and spears so the Feral Pred picked similar weapons (albeit the hi-tech version of them). So that's why it looked 'primitive'. They already have warp capable interstellar vessel, so I assume they already had plasma casters developed, or at least something close to it. Except when they go to war, the ritual law would be suspended. Let's say, a war against the Xenomorphs, then the Yautja are free to bring the deadliest gear they could find.
@@nitrokid Ooooh yeah that makes sense actually cuz it’d be a bit unfair if this preddy had a plasma caster and stuffy Naru would have been turned into red mist. I really liked the mask as well, it’s different but the design was very cool.
Ive rewatched it a few times already and you have no idea how much foreshadowing was happening until you rewatch. They put so much symbolism for such a simple plot. Snake showed it could be sensed, wolf showed that it could harmed, bear proved it could be toppled, europeans proved it could be outsmarted, native american proved it could be killed
except they didn't outsmart it.... at all. Naru did. The trappers only knew how to hunt prey animals, not something that thinks like them, and not something SMARTER than them. And just like Naru says (when she's speaking both to the trapper AND the predator), they assume that anything that isn't just like them is lesser. Dumber, weaker, primitive, etc. That's why they were all killed immediately. None of them managed to land a significant hit on it. Only Taabe and Naru. Naru is the one that outsmarted the predator. Naru is the one who SUCCESSFULLY led it into several traps, ambushed it, and killed it with its own weapons. The only purpose the trappers served was to show that there are other monsters besides the predator that she now has the responsibility to protect her tribe from.
@@Don-fw3nv Well, this particular Predator was conducting his first hunt on Earth and one of his first hunts in general, so inexperience is at play here.. Also, I've noticed this one seems prideful even by Predator standards to where he takes unnecessary damage that's easily avoidable for more veteran Yautja that are more self-disciplined and wise. Though I'm uncertain if pride plays a part in it as well, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Fun fact, the pistol naru got is the same pistol that the predator gave to Danny glover's character in predator 2, so the predators that came back in the credit scene was the one from part 2, so either naru gives him the gun, or he kills her, if they make a sequel we'll see how they got the gun from her
I swear this is the first Predator sequel to actually earn those callbacks to the first movie. When her Brother says “If it bleeds, we can Kill it.” That’s a badass callback!
“Thunderbird” is a Native American spirit/myth/legend that already existed. Naru mistaking the predator ship for the thunderbird is on the same lines as the ancient people thinking the predators were gods in AvP
I liked this film as well. I liked the fact that they didn't do a direct translation from the French language. If the audience didn't understand French then you were in the same boat as the main character, who didn't understand what they were saying. I liked that little detail. Even if you did understand it, you could see from the translation, or lack there of, that the character didn't know the words translated. ❤
When I watched this and didn't understand what the French were saying, I instantly thought I will find out when Tim reacts to it haha As a Native, not of the Camanche Tribe, I had a good time with this one
If you noticed if you look closely the gun that she takes that same gun is in Predator 2. That the other actor was given by the predator as a trophy for having beaten one of their own. But Naru has it in this film. it's the same gun from both movies.
During her escape, she finds a pistol which she's taught to use by one of the injured hunters. Once she returns to her tribe, bloody and triumphant after vanquishing the Predator, a close-up shot reveals that it's the same weapon seen at the end of Predator 2, set 278 years later in the Los Angeles of 1997
You may have noticed that the predator in this movie looks different than the others. It also acts more feral and primitive. This is because it is a different sub-species from tropical, desert areas of Yautja Prime (Predator home planet). Btw the predator race actual name is Yautja. It has much wider brow which contains heat sensing organs which allows it to hunt even without vision, for example during a sand storm in the desert. It's skin is more scaly which allows it to contain more water and it has longer, thinner dreadlocks which allow for better sensing and more water-cotaining in dry areas. Also its mask is very important. You may have noticed that it has no visor and therefore no way to see. That is because underneath the mask are several heat sensors which directly link and interface with the predator's own heat sensing organs in its head. That data is then turned into a visual image and sent to its eyes. Also, you may have noticed that it is not wearing much armor, and whatever armor it does wear, is adorned with many bones, even its mask is made out of a skull (which resembles a lot the 'River Ghost' from 2010 Predators). That is because bones have a big significance to it, both biological and cultular. If you look closely at its mouth, you can see several molars which are perfect for crushing bone. That's also why its mouth and mandibles are exposed even when it is wearing a mask, so it can bite down at its prey and crush its bones while also eating a big chunk of their flesh.
I am SO glad you watched this! I was worried that non-natives would pass this or people would be too caught up with a woman being the protagonist. This is one of my family's new favorites.
I remember another review talking about the movie was stupid because the french and the commanche spoke English, a language that they didn't know at the time. Uh.... its an American made movie. They speak English for OUR sake, in reality they would indeed be speaking their native tongue.
If that other reviewer had been paying attention, all of the English was supposed to represent the Comanche language. It should have been obvious from the "Naru in the cage" scene. If they were that sensitive to it, then they should have watched the Comanche language version.
My aunt watched this movie and left a 1 star rating because "animals were killed". I mean aside from the Predator, what did she think people did early on with animals? The provide food, skins for warmth and other needs like trading. So on and so forth. I feel like people really need education on the past.
It may have taken 35 years and multiple lousy movies (Shane Black's The Predator, anyone?) to achieve it, but the Predator franchise has finally seen the arrival of an extension of the series worthy of being compared to the original. Some really good kills, a well-paced story that keeps it simple, and a cool heroine played by Amber Midthunder (seeing Native American actors take center stage in a project like this is also a plus for representation). This would've been a lot of fun to see on the big screen. Another very solid effort from Dan Trachtenberg that proves 10 Cloverfield Lane was no fluke.
I loved this movie enough to give it a solid 9/10, but I'm right there with you, man. As a longtime Predator fan myself, this movie really did revitalize the entire franchise. After 2018, it seriously felt like it was on life support. I am so happy that my favorite sci-fi franchise ever has been given another chance.
I know a lot of people may not know this, but the dog Sarii in this movie (originally named CoCo) is from a neighborhood a few minutes from where I live. He was in an animal shelter, but found his way to California and would up in this movie!
A 300-style Spartan vs a predator would be badass. A predator in the coliseum vs a bunch of gladiators would also be a great action set piece Basically anyone in history fighting hand-to-hand with a predator is ripe for the picking. These movies will write themselves
I'm happy you noticed the Yautja Making it's way up the ladder: A snake, a dog, a bear then a human. This movie was refreshing, I think the predator (2018) was too much. I was surprised with the weaponry he had. I thought it was a plasma caster but it's like an anti-gravity propulsion launcher. The shield that doubled as a bladed weapon. And the laser cutting mine trap thing. It was a return to form for the series. So brutal and serious, also dang dude you understand french? I didn't know exactly what they said but context and tone I get what was happening.
I always felt like the 2018 movie as well as a couple others focused on the wrong aspects of the original movie. It was all sci-fi effects and action without the slow build up and story. I didn't care for them at all so needless to say this was a breath of fresh air and a masterpiece.
Haha, It's actually kinda cool that he's also translating what the French Trappers are saying, I didn't really understand what they said until he translated for us lol
The world building in this film is awesome. When you rewatch film, the scenes with villages, chores peoples do and their equipment, its clear how much detail and effort was put in creating this world its mindblowing. This far exceeds simple action film label. World building is there with Last of the Mohican and that standard which is impressive for film with this budget and release channel. This should definately go on imax on theater. I would pay to see this film on big screen.
Jesse Ventura commented on this film saying, “Welcome to the Predator family. [Director Dan Trachtenberg] thank you for making such a thoughtful, creative and wonderful film.” I agree 100%.
Hey, didn't know if you knew this, but you can watch this with the Comanche audio dub. It's the only Predator movie I've seen - as soon as I heard about it being made, when the leak happened, and Amber Midthunder was announced, I was interested. I was absolutely interested.
WE FINALLY HAVE A GENUINELY AMAZING PREDATOR MOVIE SINCE THE FIRST ONE!!!! Don’t get me wrong, I really like Predator 2 and Predators, but this one doesn’t just beat them, it kills them, rips out their skulls and spines, and hangs them on its wall. Not only did it have intense action sequences, but both the director and writer managed to perfectly balance that tightrope of tension by both showing that this Predator is a truly terrifying and formidable threat while also not making him OP with his weaponry, thereby giving the people a fighting chance. On top of that I absolutely LOVED the portrayal of the Comanche Nation. Showing how they were and still are some of the best fighters, best horse riders and best hunters that have ever lived, while also showing how close knit of a community they are. I really loved how they went back and forth between English and Comanche when speaking with each other, next time I see this movie I’m watching the Comanche Cut where they speak Comanche throughout the whole movie. But my favorite part of this movie is seeing the story of Naru. She is honestly one of the most tenacious and badass characters I have seen in action or sci-fi movies in a long time. Amber Midthunder managed to be as much of a badass as freaking Arnold Schwarzenegger! And thank god they didn’t kill that adorable dog 🐕!
Bro I also watched this movie in HULU....really awesome👍 this movie links with Naru holding the 1719 flintlock pistol which later in Predator 2 ending the Superior Predator gives it as a trophy to Lieutenant Mike Harrigan....
Hi Tim👋 I just finished watching your reaction to Prey on Hulu and I love your reaction to this new friend everybody so much going with the other Predator movies I even watch this movie like six times and many more soon and to tell you something Tim I have the Predator as a custom Lego minifigure that I bought from Mercari and I made the Indian woman myself so I can make a react from the movie but in Lego I'm a Lego master builder and I promise you I will treasure your reaction to this movie forever meaning I will watch your reaction to this movie Forever on RU-vid Tim and see you on next reaction video✌💌
this movie take place 1719 in northern great plains in north America (it's kinda obvious because of the French🇫🇷 it's for the people dont know when this film take place) and in the credits they make it a simple animation the events happened in the film until the credits almost finish the tribes hears something and look up and sees alot ships (obliviously still in the simple animation)
I definitely appreciated your translations 👍 I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. The dog was the MVP. An anthology series is Predators showing up in different time periods would be badass. I'd love to see a predator stalking the battlefields of WWI for example.
This version of the predator is what they call a youngblood of the species He is inexperienced and learning the hunt As he evolves and gets better at hunting and doesn't get himself killed his weaponry will change and get more advanced all from comics basically.. he's literally being watched by the others .So I guarantee there's gonna be a part two by the way they show the moving paintings at the end... also that particular item that is thrown to the chief is the same exact item that's in predator 2 .. For me this is movie of the year easily and I love it I love it ... Predator species themselves live a very long time In the order of thousands of years According to comics
I honestly got The Revenant (2015) vibe from PREY which is awesome. Honestly Tim, please check out that movie too in the future. You'll see what i mean
I loved this film! a massive move forward from previous predator sequels, they did the origin story of the predator justice. Interesting fact: Naru whistling to attract the predator is considered a big no no and very taboo in Native American culture. It is believed that whistling at night attracts evil spirits, demons etc. Naru purposely called for the demon/predator on the fur poacher.
I like Screenrants theory the sequel will be akin to "Aliens" and bring multiple predators to an epic battle against her tribe based on the end credits animation. If they don't do that option, I hope they go way into the future and cast Amber Midthunder as a descendent of herself.
I’ve watched every single Predator film (including crossovers with Aliens) and I have to say that Prey measures up well to the 1987 classic compared to the other films that felt lacking or cliché. As bloody violent as the Predator franchise is, it shows how the lore of this alien hunter keeps growing.
So glad you enjoyed it. I also said its perhaps the best since the first. Especially how they made him more primitive in this and yet still capable. Despite my concern about it being set in the past, it works better then I thought having native Americans in it. I do enjoy some of the compains about "It's unrealistic that a female Commanche would be a warrior!". Uh... so that's unrealistic but a alien coming down to earth to hunt is more realistic? lol. Just enjoy the movie people. Give credit to the fact this was the best thing we have seen in a long time from the franchise. And sure, it wasn't as "gory" as Predator (at least some say so), but I was happy with what we got. For once I can say I'd love another Prey movie! I'd also love to see a AVP movie based in the past with primitive Pred vs maybe more primitive Aliens. Frankly this version of the Pred was way more scary to me. And credit to the actress and actor who played her brother. They are both newer actors and did an amazing job. Even the dog, it was his first time being in a movie! He did well since to many times animals tend to look off screen at handlers or the camera. He didn't. He's the goodest boy! :D
But a smart character in a film is a threat! /sarcasm lol ... Honestly, I'd never have given this a glance if it wasn't for Naru's character. If everything was the same but it was with a dude, I wouldn't have been interested - mainly because it was the casting that got my interest to start. Is the movie perfect? No, but nothing out there is. There are things (albeit tiny things) I'd change (and maybe tomorrow I wouldn't, so it's hard to really say completely), but overall, the movie succeeded. It would have been a box-office smash if it had gotten a proper release. Amber Midthunder was on all four seasons of Legion. She's just not as well known. She's also been on the Roswell reboot since it started.
@@forsakenjones4695 indeed especially in the Native American tribes if you proved yourself you were in like flynn… also the Comanche were straight badasses and did not mess around… I could see there being Many female Comanche warriors
The “Thunderbird” is a old Native-American mythological legend shared among the different tribes. They didn’t know about The Predator. Fun fact: The species The Predator is called “Yautja.” Pronounced “Hish-Qu-Ten.”
Btw Timothee, that pistol at the end was in predator 2 as well if you remember it,there's a really great story of a pirate behind that pistol but they fucking changed it in this movie, that's what disappointed me the most about this film, everything else was great, the first predator film is still the goat in my opinion, this is maybe second.
It is probably likely that they are just doing their own version of the story of that gun but their is still a possibility that somehow that gun gets in the hands of the pirate and they still could do the storyline in a sequel but that would make it very messy so idk. I personally didn’t mind the change because imo the gun storyline wouldn’t really be long enough for an entire movie or if anything be difficult to do correctly in a movie format. Not saying it isn’t possible because it could be but it would be difficult to have it make sense to people who don’t know the lore.
@@warhawk_yt yeah true, you should really read that comic storyline cause after reading that,i was convinced that the comic storyline would've been way better than this,it was still a great movie, don't get me wrong but the comic storyline is way better and way more chilling, cause the predator in that storyline actually has a sense of honor and respect unlike this one.
@@aaditkhan728 I know the gist of the storyline but its been a while so I might read it at some point fully. I haven't really delved deep into the lore but I know a lot of it by just hearing what people have said over the years.
@@warhawk_yt yeah its a really good story tbh,i think its the closest thing to predators and humans working side by side and having peace and respect for each other, its really good.
A katamia or whatever is a right of passage for hunters. They were to go hunt dangerous animals like bears, wolves, etc... the predator showing up was coincidence lol I'm not familiar with the word cause I'm Cree lol plus I'm not too well versed in my own native language. Shameful I know but it is what it is lol
Prey is a good movie, but Predator 1 & 2 represent the lore and the essence of the Yautja. Predator 2 give us the culture, the gore, the honour, the weapons and everthing about the Predators. Predator 1 is amazing for the action, suspense and terror. For me the the desings of Jungle & City Hunter by Stan Winston are the best of the franchise. Prey is pretty good, even the movie have many references to Predator 1 & 2. Nice video bro.
Recognize that flintlock pistol? It's the same one the elder Predator, Greyback, gifted to LAPD detective Mike Harrigan in 1997, after he defeated the City Hunter in combat.
Loved the translation....only words I picked up were , " a girl " and " shit " lol cause in spanish it's pretty much the same word....just slight pronunciation diff.... but this was the Ferrel Predetor , the first time they has visited the planet....can't wait fir the sequel , wonder hiw they're gonna get that pistol back...they changed how she got it but that didn't bother me...in the lore the French guy who's pistol it was was actually a friend to the predator
The guy who gave her the gun, the translator, he is the original owner of the gun. His name is on the gun, and it’s the same gun from predator 2. Doesn’t look good for Naru later on does it?
Loved this movie! Had low expectations thanks Requiem (Minus Wolf) and The Predator 🤢 Was happily surprised how good this was, about time one of my favourite franchises got back on track. 🤣 Also loved your reaction and finally getting a French translation. 😎
Hi wish I could speak French, can you please translate what the man Naru used as bate was saying to her in French before Predator killed him? ABSOLUTELY GREAT REACTION👍
YES the original first movie the soldiers had crazy weapons and firepower of which non of that worked, the predator has never been beaten with guns or muscle, so its obvious that this young girl warrior could beat the predator.
What are you talking about, Tim? In the first Predator movie it wasn't any technology that killed him. It was a bit of mud and a primitive trap, employed by a clever human...
i find it amusing that nearly every reactor assumes that the predator killed all the buffalo. and thanks for the french translation. :) oh and make sure you watch the animation at the end. its show THREE more predator ships arriving!
Alright, Tim, i wanna see your reaction on watching Outlander (2008). It's my favorite human vs alien movie of all. What are you going to witness is the battle between viking people with the help of a man from other planet and one very unstoppable predatory alien.
Usually, movie sequels, prequels and spin-offs that go straight to streaming is the equivalent to an installment that goes straight to video Why Disney didn't want to give this movie a theatrical release?
I think the biggest reason was how bad the last predator movie was that they didn’t want to risk it and the fact that from what some people said the visual effects look good on a Home Screen but would look significantly worse on a theater screen.
"Predator" walked, so that "Prey" could run. ⚔️ But if this movie had a surprise appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger post-credits, it would have given the movie more meaning as it marked the start of the 1987 legend.
