Hi Sophie! MCM uses Cobalt hardware, Cobalt is a durable type of metal that’s even harder than Platinum, Titanium or even Gold. It comes close to Ceramic. Cobalt does not scratch with normale usage My mom has an MCM bag that features cobalt hardware from belt to bottom studs and even the studs on the bottom of the bag have hardly any visible sign of use.. (2Y old) same goes for the lock on the front. And the rest. The leather and canvas is more at what one should expect at 3k for a bag for only a mere quarter and a half of the price. I know LV is OG but quality over quantity, and MCM delivers. Their leather, their canvas, their whole way of making their products is what should be price as LV.. nowadays everyone uses LV either counterfeit or authentic.. be different. Standout. LV today is nothing like back in the 05’ 10’s and 15’. Leave the hype.

I think they’re just trading on the incredible history and brand reputations that others already built-up before them. It feels like it’s been a really long time since someone has taken over a brand, revolutionised it, and improved the quality and range.

It is important to be nitpicky, especially if you pay 6k for a bag! It‘s the small details that matter and end up making a designer bag "exclusive". If high quality materials and craftsmanship are not provided, it shouldn’t be on the shelves.

In my opinion bad quality shouldn't happened at all. It is a shame that you have on shelf in Chanel shop bag which is crooked(!!!) They show us that they don't care about us, customers. That maybe they will be lucky and sell that bad quality stuff. It schould be checked million times before it will be on the shelf. Chanel is laughing to our faces 😑

$6000 for a bag... quality should be on point. You wouldnt buy a brand new car for full price with a dent in the front and just tell yourself to deal with it, would you?....but this is why i stick to vintage or older pieces. Quality is there.

Absolutely. Why would anyone behave as though these companies were doing them a favour? Not that it affects me. Like you, I buy wonderful items at prices that make full price look ridiculous, to be honest. Second hand, great condition, quality in abundance, and more character too!

I have a coach bag that I bought a few months ago. I have used it almost every day and there is barely a hint of wear on the outer corners. I say it's worth the investment and something that doesn't wear out quickly is exactly what I wanted.

I have a few Coach and Tory Burch bags and they’re lovely. I could buy Chanel but at 10x the price but not 10x the quality, I can’t bring myself to do it. At this point, I feel people who buy Chanel are wealthy to the point that money is no object OR they are people who tend to collect Chanel. I agree that Coach have too many outlets and have too many sales to quickly. They’re worth more than that.

I have seem one of my friends' fake Chanel flap bag, legit is more well made and well stitched than the one I got a couple years back... It Is since that moment that I decided I will never buy a brand new Chanel bag again. The price is ridiculous, no where near its price point. Hermès all the way baby

Okay I’ve become so disenchanted with Chanel and their quality. For the price you should not have to check quality. They should have an entire department of Quality Assurance and Quality control. To me this is unbelievable. If you took the name off, no one would buy it with some of the wide tolerances they have. I used to have a double flap on my wish list. I don’t anymore. I have other bags on it. Sophie have you ever looked at Celine? I’m thinking a Micro belt bag.

Same here! Chanel Classic Flap price doesn't reflect the quality of the bag. Even Lambskin, it used to be so luxurious and stunning, now it looks like it's made of paper... Plus how many beautiful bags (like the Celine) can you buy for that price? You can get two stunning, great quality bags, and still put money aside.

Glad you are giving Coach another shout out. I’ve compared my recent coach purchases to my recent LV purchase and coach quality is actually superior. Their glazing for one is better, the symmetry is on point unlike LV and coach has no flaws where my pochette metis has dents in the canvas…The nice thing about coach after you’ve spent hundreds of dollars even if there is a problem - you did not spend thousands of dollars….and frankly coach makes me just as happy as LV

Totally agree. I bought a new Coach bag and a new LV bag last year. The Coach bag looks and feels so much more luxurious than the LV. And the Coach bag feels more interesting and unique when I carry it. I get loads more compliments on the Coach bag too!

I just bought a stunning Chanel flap. Made sure the seller had a storefront with great reviews and asked for third party Entrupy certification. You can log into to Entrupy site, so you know it is a genuine item.

I personally like to look for vintage pieces that don't necessarily have a huge logo. I feel like they would be less likely to be fake that way. I recently got a vintage Bottega Veneta intrecciato bag. Beautiful leather, amazing quality, good price. Of course, I also always try to buy from reputable places that authenticate their items, but I've had some luck with Japanese sellers on ebay.

The price of a chanel item requires perfection. The lack of perfect quality for the price has completely repulsed this customer. I only buy vintage for this reason. I do own some LV Alma BB bags which are very nice. The vintage canvas lasts and feels thicker than the new items.

My super fake Chanel’s quality is impeccable. The stitching lines up and the flap is alligned. The leather is lamb skin and so soft. It has no issues and it was $500 instead of $6000

So I went into Chanel recently, they had loads of 2.55s and classic flaps in every size and colour. Each and every classic flap had a crooked top. Some were so bad, I took out a triangle ruler to see the angle, it was bad. I had 2 with 5⁰ degrees. When I asked about it, she said it was due to the security tag, a lie, as it was attached to the chain and put into the bag. Even in some recent advertisements for the classic flap it has a crooked flap... 😔 I personally don't mind some minor flaws, it makes the bag a bit more unique in my opinion, but what I witnessed that day was just terrible, especially for the amount they charge now....😔

Some brands that could be the alternatives from now on are: Loewe, Chloé (or even See by Cholé, if your budget is even lower), Bulgari/Bvlgari, Burberry, Alaiä, Saint Laurent (some styles that are not that super expensive), and Prada and Gucci.

I find it really helpful of you to pinpoint the flaws and the decrease in quality because these are things that I would have never noticed/considered before. I would have never noticed the zippers or the dent because I think a lot of us have never been examining the products in-store to know what a "perfectly done" bag should look like. Hi Sophie ! Your vintage Chanel is just stunning . I have one vintage Chanel , model called Lady Di or Diana in beige-y pink from 1992 and the quality is amazing . I wouldn't buy a new one 'cause their quality has been down for years . And if you want to have unique luxury handbags , the vintage is the only way . Your info about stiching on the flap that should line up with the " below " is precious . Greetings from Paris .

It’s funny because one of the ways to check if a Chanel is fake is to see if the quilting lines up. And for LV, the epi leather is the only one that lasts. I went to check out a Neverfull at the store and was shocked at the canvas. It felt so flimsy. Which doesn’t work well on a bag that’s already somewhat sloppy in shape. I bought hardware protectors from Havredeluxe in the UK.

Hi Sophie, I recently ordered a preloved vintage Chanel bag from Japan and I am super pleased with it! I really think this is the way forward from now on. At the end of the day, if a bag has lasted 20 years and it still works and looks good, I'd rather that than paying an ever-increasing price for something that may not last as long due to the bad quality. I’m excited to see which brands you show us in the follow up. I did finally buy myself the Polene Numero Un that Instagram insisted I wanted. The leather smells amazing and it has great structure and attention to detail. And even with shipping it was under $500. I’m excited to see what other great brands are out there.

I bought two LV bags from the SS21 me s collection. The Keepall XS Damier Distortion and the Steamer XS in Damier Distortion also. The hardware on the Keepall chipped and tarnished within 3 uses. I was so pissed. They were so hard to get. So I bought the steamer a few days after and thought we’ll this one doesn’t have a zipper so it’ll be fine. Well the canvas started to bend and started to get a point in it. First on one side. Then the other. I knew eventually it would crack. I returned both bags. Shortly after I purchased a Fendi Selleria Peekaboo and have never been happier. The quality of the leather is amazing. The hand stitching. The hardware is palladium. The leather still smells amazing months later. Yes the price point is almost $2k higher than the LV bags but so worth it. It’s leather and alcantara lined not some cheap nylon. The leather is this and has a natural grain to it. Quality is out there. You just have to look. xx

I’m so glad you stated to scrutinize your bad at purchase! I did that with my first big purchase. I thought I loved it, went home and noticed the Prada symbol looked weird so I took it back and looked at like 4 models before deciding! Sophieee!!! This video is so on point! As a designer, I keep these in mind! Quality is of utmost importance to me! Especially when you said like if Coach can make their bags straight, so can Chanel and damn right!!! And the positioning of the flap, the mm gaps, etc. those are the things that are looked into when you are luxury brand. I have studied Luxury and Branding; Details must be impeccable. So the points you make in this video are very valid!

I care about quality, quilting straight, etc. when I buy from boutique because authenticity is often judged by others (and myself!) by those things.... if a fake is better quality than my genuine, I have an issue

I was upset with the Chanel also. Also thanks for mentioning COACH, I had one small "oh that's not right" bag from them and they were SO NICE. So yes I have my one Chanel bag for those super occasions (I buy to use though and to pass on to my daughters and not investment!) Also vintage is lovely, and get the right person to clean it. I've been looking at some used to add, and that will probably go to my girls one day, new is iffy now.

There are more alternatives that just LV and Chanel.. the only thing still keeping them exclusive these days are their price points. Great video Sophie 🤗 This happened to me at Louis Vuitton. I bought a Keepall 45 for traveling. The zipper itself is shiny gold but the slider is matt gold. I didn’t realize it in the store. After comparing it to my Keepall 55 I started to notice the obvious difference. The zipper is a shiny yellow gold and the slider is a matt greenish gold. I went back to the store and told my SA. She then told me that this is normal. They don’t always use the same materials for the same part of the bag. I was very irritated and quite annoyed to be honest. From a brand like Louis Vuitton I expected matching hardware. I have no idea why they do this but its not ok. I never had a problem with Dior or Hermès. Hermès always delivers the best leather and hardware quality you can imagine. Since then I only but Hermès.

If most people stopped buying them they would have to improve on quality. Why would anyone be hellbent on buying things that are clearly not worth the price anymore? It's complete nonsense. If I'm buying something for $800 I expect good quality, let alone $8000. Just stop buying these brands new and find others, or buy the vintage Chanel from the 80s and 90s when it was actually well made. Expect better and respect your money and yourself. You deserve better than be treated like mindless blind sheep by certain luxury houses.

I was at Dior the other day and I tried on some shoes, I don’t remember their name but one fit bigger than the other and they told me it’s made by hand therefore they’re prone to mistake…. The SA was justifying the mistakes….thoughts? 👀💕

Do not forget that people are NOT symetrical. We alsways have difference between left and right side. Feet are great example. Most people have minimum few milimeter difference in length of their feet. It is VERY common to have 0.5 cm (5mm) difference between feet length and people do not realise that until late in their life. That being said - "mistakes" are not acceptable in luxury industry. Not for the price they expect us to pay.

I highly recommend Miu Miu bags - hardware is indestructible. I have a belt bag with a gold chain, I wear it all the time (3 years straight) and it is still like new :)

I bought the antigona and alma bb. I was so impressed with the quality of the antigona. The zipper was just remarkable. I'm not a fussy buyer because I bought these bags for daily use but I can confirm that what she is saying is true. Also, you need to check the item itself. I think nowadays, QC for these bags is not fantastic due to cost-efficiency.

On Fashionphile, I saw quite a few classic wallet on chain bags that have the CC logo noticeably twisted to one side. This year I had to return the new model of LV palm spring mini because I can't believe that those two little leather pieces on each side of the front pocket were not level, one is indeed crooked and higher than the other one. The canvas also looked awfully cheap like a fake bag. I have considered switching from Chanel to Hermes, but the styles of Hermes are not really my cup of tea, Birkin and kelly look too grandma type, the H on Constance looks stupid, the Lindy looks no different from a Nike duffle bag.

I had to return my first YSL bag 2 times.. so yeah we all should be very picky because quality went down. Doesn’t matter if you spend 1.000 or 6.000 its your hard earned money and they should do it damn good if they ask this prices for their product’s.

Dear Sophie, always enjoy earring your take on prices. There are still brands that are great price for the quality, like Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Valentino, and others. The Valentino Rockstud Tote is full leather and it's more affordable than the Louis Vuitton Neverfull (that I love by the way) but it's Canvas at the end of the day. The Givenchy Antigona in the Soft Leather as the most amazing quality and luxurious leather I've ever seen. It's beautiful and shiny, but not to delicate that it scratches that easily.

I liked this video a lot! There really are enough videos out there explaining what to look for when buying a luxury bag. Lots of information are on the purse forum of course, but I think some viewers don’t check. Chanel has a lot of other problems too, like loose stitches or plasticky caviar.

You are right despite quality dropping, we will still end up buying…. Becoz we are into luxury handbags. And you are right too abt scrutinising every bit details before committing to purchase since its lump sum money. Nvr compromise on a piece thats defective. One thing though, LV after sales service is fantastic. Any defects post sale, you can still send it back for either repair or they may just do a direct exchange for you. Once I bought a bag at LV paris flagship whilst on holiday. Kept the bag for 3yrs w/o use as it was meant as an occasion bag. When i finally wanted to use it, to my horror the glue melted and ruined the entire bag. I brought it to the nearest boutique asking if damage can be repaired. Instead of repairing it for me, they told me to choose any bag of the same value and they will honour me an exchange. This is despite the item being more than 3yrs old. This is why until today, I am still a big fan of LV. They will honour you a brand new bag or any other item of equivalent value if they deem the item as a defect of theirs. Lastly, I love your outfit. Looks great on you. Very dreamy n demure!

I am so glad you showcased the decreasing quality of LV. I was gifted an LV bracelet last Christmas and I was very disappointed that the gold hardware scuffed after the first month of wear. I even started noticing that the glue on one of my wallets was starting to peel within the first year of having it back in 2019. I have been an LV fan for some time, and to see how poor the quality has gotten makes me not even want to shop there anymore.

I purchased a LV Neverfull mm and the quality was horrendous. It looked and felt fake. There were glue marks on the top of the canvas. Overall it felt really cheap and for $1600 I expected more. I sent it back. My Alma bb came in much better condition.

I think it’s hilarious that bags I bought as a teen and in my 20’s like MK, Coach, Fossil, are practically bomb proof and 20+ yrs on, they’re still in perfect shape. Chanel are just pumping these out because of the demand, no wonder the quality is so poor. Most customers don’t analyze them upclose so Chanel can get away with it. Also, the SA’s in the Chanel boutiques in Toronto are so up their own asses, I won’t shop there. I find the customers walk around like their sht doesn’t stink. The whole experience is always awful. There are so many other options you don’t really need Chanel.

Few weeks ago, I went to Chanel, Harrods and others, I tried a lot of Chanel bags, the quality were so bad, brand new, just wonky, stitch bad etc. I already have a few I bought 10+ years ago, because of the huge quality difference, I really cannot bring myself to buy them. You are absolutely right, Louis Vuitton is bad too. To me, unacceptable quality, comparing those I bought years ago. Just to share, I have found a few alternative brands that has exceptional leather and made quality. Gucci(Dionysus), Givenchy (agree with you), Alexander McQueen(satchel and clutches), Launer (i like Judi, men wallets are great too, I bought them in Fortnum). Effectively, I buy their top of the range even with exotic skin, I really enjoy beautiful craftsmanship, attention to detail. The amazing thing is, I kept using them, they really keep their shape, just beautiful. I used to get this quality wear feel from Chanel and Louis Vuitton, now I feel like an idiot buying them.

I’ve gotten some shoddy quality bags from LV in the last 3-4 years. The glazing is always thinner than on my older bags. The treated leather on the DE is not great whether the older shiny coated or the matte treatment. Coach gets the leather treatment right. I have 30 year old Coach bags with good hardware and nice looking leather.

Thanks so much for pointing that out. People like to always just praise these brands and let these small things slide, just like that. But these are the items that people would literally save up so much of their money for, so I think it’s fair enough for us to expect a lot from it too! The quality of the vintage releases was so much better bc I think they (the brands/companies, not the artisans) used to put so much emphasis on the luxury of the brand, the exclusivity, etc therefore they needed to deliver top notch quality. Meanwhile, they’re more focused on selling to mass market nowadays.. BUT those should never be a justification as to why these leather goods are poorly produced now! 😭 I hope they can get back to how they used to be in terms of quality and consistency.. One thing that I hate the most out of all the differences between the old vs new of all the luxury brands out there is the vachetta on LV 💀💀it just doesn’t patina as nicely as it used to be..

Sophie, you’re so thorough like me!! 😂 I thought I was the only one that closely examines her handbags like this! I fell out laughing when you grabbed a ruler cause I’ve done that before myself. When you’re paying this kind of money for these handbags, I feel they should have perfect craftsmanship! Because that’s really what you’re paying for …. the craftsmanship. These purses are constructed by the top leather artisans in the world! Every section should measure the same, every flap should be constructed perfectly. And everything should line up perfectly. LV and Chanel craftsmanship and quality has declined so much the past decade. I want a Chanel 19 so bad but I’ve decided to pass on it because I’m not happy with Chanel’s quality right now. Can't agree more! Luxury brands (not all) are not as luxurious as before. I think partly to blame are consumers, since we still patronise the brand, although they are offering us a lower quality. Versace was bought out by Kors group along with choo. I deal with the bags often and they feel cheap. I would even prefer to get a Rebecca Minkoff bag over Versace. Minkoff is better built for way less.

Most sit on my shelves. I'm disgusted with LV, Chanel is heading in that direction. I use my Fendi bags, probably my favorite brand and my vintage Chanel. I totally agree with what you’ve said. Given the fact that we are spending huge amount of money on these bags I do demand them to be perfect! It is unacceptable for Chanel to raise the price if it’s quality has gone that bad…what a shame
