I am so happy you are breaking this down into several videos - there is so much in this poem! In my high school literature class we were required to read this and complained bitterly because all we knew about it was it was long and didn't rhyme. After the first few pages we were hooked. We even started memorizing our favorite passages.
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 3 месяца назад
Completely agree. I found out pretty quick that this was too good to squeeze all into one or two videos. Breaking it down this way has allowed me to dive into it on a deeper level. I knew this was going to be a harder read but I underestimated how much I would enjoy it. I wish we would have read something like this in high school. This type of work definitely changes how you view literature. At least it has for me. Thanks for watching my friend and stay blessed!

Wendigoon has a really good video on this too! I’ve read it before for my communications degree. My professor thought it was a sympathetic look at evil, I thought she misunderstood the text and was projecting onto it
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 3 месяца назад
Ohh wow! Just looked up Wendigoon and can’t believe I haven’t come across that channel yet. Their huge! I will definitely check them out. I get her point but that is what allows Milton to stand out. He allowed the Satan to have some of the best speeches and lines in the book. To me he created a character that you know you are suppose to hate… but deep down you kind of feel different about him. I don’t think he shows Sympathy to evil but makes us think a little deeper about how conniving and adaptable Satan can be in whichever character he needs to display at the moment. I felt like this when Heath Ledger played Batman. You know he is the bad guy, but you just can’t help but love something hidden about the character. I’m rambling at this point. Haha thanks so much for watching and stay blessed!

Even for atheists (like me) Paradise Lost is enthralling! Such a great and deep work. It's like the music of Bach. The Romanian philosopher E.M. Cioran said: "If anyone owed everything to Bach it must be God". The same can be said about Milton.
@The_Cause

I have never heard that saying but I would definitely agree. Reading Milton's Paradise Lost is like experiencing a song that just hits deep inside of you. I can see where this work surpasses religious preference and can be appreciated by all. Thank you so much for watching. Hope all has been well my friend!

I LOVED Paradise Lost, Milton was a great for sure. Your opening analysis and suggestion was right on. One great thing about these anthologies is you can re-read them in context of a theme (rather than a serial reading) You touched on some great essay/research topics. Cheers!

Truly appreciate the kind words and glad these videos have inspired others to read through the classics. These old books have really grounded me over the last year. So far it has been time worth spent and I am looking forward to reading the Iliad as well. So many of these old books reference Homer that it would definitely help to read them first. Thanks for watching and hope all has been well my friend!

Enjoying this summary and discussion! I wondered also about God placing those creatures at the gates of Hell, but in the annotated edition I read, a footnote said that Milton was creating an analogy, or maybe allegory is the right word here. Sin leads to Death, which leads to Hell. So that's why Sin and Death are "guarding" the gates of hell.
@The_Cause

Oh wow! That is a really good point. I may need to check out a copy with the annotations as I did not realize they explained stuff like that. Have you finished it yet? Satan's rebellion echoes a theme found in other stories probably the most famous being the Olympian Gods overthrow of the Titans. I think this reflects the human yearning for freedom and the resolve to throw off the chains of oppression even if success is uncertain. They are willing to brave the danger. You can see this in historical events such as the American revolution in which 13 weak colonies took on the strongest military force in the world at the time. Zeus won while Satan lost but winning or losing isn't the point it's the struggle that has meaning
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 3 месяца назад
Such a great comment. I noticed that as well. At least in the first two books the problem is freedom. Good and evil may come next and may be used as a weapon but, Satans sole focus at the moment is liberty from hell. Mix a need for liberty with an enormous dose of revenge and that seems to be where Satan is currently at on his journey. Truly appreciate you watching my friend and stay blessed!

It is probably the best book/poem I have read yet in the Harvard Classics. I really like Franklin's Autobiography just because I love that time period but as far as expanding my literary understanding and challenging me to read deeper. Hands down this poem has made me work for it and because of that it holds the most value at this point in the series. Hope you get a chance to read it and enjoy. Thanks so much for watching!

Great video! It's easy to sympathize with the devil in the first few books of Paradise Lost. Milton certainly did not stoop to commit a straw man fallacy. In fact, all of the debates (there are many) in Paradise Lost are well-balanced. I enjoyed reading the debates almost as much as seeing all the imagery come to life in my mind.

@@The_Cause Both of them had Latin at school while I didn't. One of them went all the way to a linguistic bachelor. The other one went the electrical engineering route (like I did as well). But generally speaking this is not actually their interest. We just started meeting every other Friday evening. We alternate in who plans the evening and the goal is to share our hobbies. Which means I don't have to take into consideration if they actually like it or not. This deepens our friendship as we get to know each other and it also helps us learing to show interest in other people who are not like us.

The sad part is that people think the Bible is literal. They think the human mind is not god. If Heaven is in the sky the bird will proceed you. If you use the mind to think of god or read about a god or understanding then that is the God. John 1. If the beginning was Logic and Understanding. It was with god. It is god. Learn the ancient sayings and you will be wise. Proverbs 1:6.
