Primal Rage was one of the more notable Mortal Kombat clones in arcades in 1994. The popularity of this Atari Games fighter secured multiple ports to the home consoles of the time, a true cross-gen title that was on most portable, 16-bit, and 32-bit CD consoles. GH101 looks into the history, gameplay, and home console versions of this dinosaur brawler. These were captured on an actual consoles playing an actual games, no emulation.

I had Talon, Sauron and Armadon. I was born literally two weeks before 1991, so I was pretty young, had no idea who the characters were nor did my parents, clearly lol. Either way, I loved those toys. Crazy I connect the dots 15 years later. Great vid

Mom got the SNES version for me when I was like 9 because I loved Dinosaurs and the Toy's R Us when asked about Dinosaur games was like "uh yeah this is a pretty popular dinosaur game", I wish I could shake that mans hand. Anyway where my fellow Diablo mains at!

Had this for my windows 95, genesis, and the gameboy, I had all the toys the small and large ones. This game kicked ass and the combos was insane if you know how to play the game. Could literally have a combo to never have your enemy counter by playing Diablo. The fatalities was hard but you earn them if you knew how to play. The reason Vertigo was the really odd one out was that she was a human sorcerer banished to the moon. After the moon was hit it unleashed her and she caused all these other gods to come out. Chaos too was some witch doctor I think somehow connected to vertigo also can’t remember. Not only that there was two additional fighters that they wanted to put in the game as a hidden character and a final boss. Toothfang a bipedal sabertooth and a skinless undead dragon named Necrosis. These were later pushed into the second version of the game but due to how shitty they made it, part 2, it never seen the light of day beyond one half demo of arcade version that has been lost to time.

Thanks for helping me pick a home console version of this to play. I remember playing the original cabinet back in around 1997 or so. Was saddened to find out that the arcade ROM had anti-piracy measures in place that hadn't been cracked even after all this time. I've heard the home conversions were all over the place, so glad to download the Saturn port and play the best possible version I can, load times be damned.

I used to be such a nerd for this game when it came out. I even drew all the characters with all their moves in a bone font. Had a magazine later on which showed Chaos doing a background fatality. On the building ruins level he cannonballs into one of the buildings which falls and crushes the opponent. For the life of me i could never pull it off but I never saw it be done either so might have been removed or just a troll.

I had heard about the emulation debacle, and how because of it, nobody could properly port the game. After the arcade cabinet I used to play at a restaurant in my home town vanished, I've been trying to find a proper port of the game for ages. I really hope they remake this game, as I'd absolutely love to play this game with a contemporary facelift and cleaned up controls. On a side note, Vertigo is my all time favorite because of how much she stands out from the rest of the cast (even made fanart). Chaos was just too weird for me, and I'm surprised he was the "fan favorite".

Primal Rage on Sega Genesis is a hybrid of 1.7 and 2.3. Plenty of characters have moves that function like 1.7, but also have moves that function like 2.3. There's also a few minor stuff like the sudden death lasting 30 seconds like in 2.3. Also, the 32X version is the exact same gameplay wise to the Sega Genesis version. Any move, combo (or even glitches) will work in both ports. By the way, I really enjoyed the video! Never messed with the SNES and CD based ports.

Kids now a days will save the game & come back to it the next week. In my generation we had to pause the game & leave the game console on. In this day & age folks will never understand the Full on focus we had to do in them days from preventing losing the entire video game level.

I play the arcade version on the PlayStation 2 Midway arcade treasures to collection every day I love this game I became a master at it I definitely can pull off every move and I can control it 100% it's an easy game to control and master. Especially on the last final arcade Port they made they fixed all the bugs and that's the part that's on the PlayStation 2

my bowling alley had this arcade cabinet up until about 2007/8 and i loved it. i also had it on PS1 and me and my cousin found an easter egg where if you manage to knock a villager back and forth enough times a volleyball net will show up.

This game had an incredibly deep and complex combo engine that allowed for some pretty insane combos to be pulled off and this is before Killer Instinct did it. Lackluster combo system, where the best you can do is land 3 hits?!.....What game did you play? I was able to pull off like 9 hit combos with Vertigo and Saruon easy. The game had a lot of crazy combos in it.

Thank you Chuck! This game was absolutely brilliant! People just had a hard time adjusting to a new combo/button system! And boy when you took the time to actually learn this game, you were hooked! Lacklustre combo system, at best 3 hits? You just dont get primal rage. This game rewards combos like none other, it just requires practice! Combine the right special moves in your combo, and you'll see lightning flashing, and the combo name up on screen so you know just how epic you are! Pull off something really crazy and your followers might streak across the screen! 8:03

They also made a novel out of the sequel. It was... pretty bad, but had an interesting concept behind human fighters being able to transform into the dino-gods, and also there was a space-dragon-zombie monster.

There is a version of GUG (Godzilla Ultraman Gamera) for openBOR that added a new King Kong playable character that is a direct sprite rip of Blizzard. OpenBOR is a beat em up creation engine that runs on PC and has been ported to many other playforms.

I loved this game, had it on ps1 as a child(I have no idea why my parents got these for us). Vertigo and talon were my mains! Also, I dont remember if there was music or not, but I do remember music at the beginning at least. I do remember the music somewhat, so I'm not sure. I was too young(to remember and have been playing that game XD)

The amount of love and passion and hard work that went into this game, I just absolutely adore it with all my heart. It was an absolute ASTONISHING looking video game for it's time, well beyond even some of the stuff we have today I think (most modern fighters look weird and ugly to me) is actually a really good fighting game to boot! I played it every time I saw it out there and even though I loved it I always avoided the console ports just because of how depressing it was to see those beautiful clay models and fantastic popping artwork dulled and watered down for a weaker system. I can't wait until the day it is fully cracked and hacked for MAME with all issues fixed, so we can finally play that arcade perfect version of Primal Rage at home after all these years. Definitely a game close to my heart

Excellent comparison video! I have the 32X, Saturn, and Xbox ports of Primal Rage. Although the Saturn and Xbox have larger sprites, perhaps the 32X port is the best overall experience since there are no loading times, and as you mentioned it has superior graphics and playability compared to the Genesis and SNES ports. If you have to play only one version (outside of the arcade), would you recommend the Saturn port over Primal Rage included in the arcade compilation Midway Arcade Treasures 2 that was released for the Game Cube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox? I always thought that one was the closest port to the arcade, even though I realize it has emulation issues such as game freezing if Vertigo uses one of her fatalities on Armadon.

If you have the Saturn version stick with it, otherwise the Midway Treasures 2 is the closest. After looking at the MAME version of 2.3 and the MT2 version of 2.3 I went with Treasures for the arcade portion. Its probably the best if you can, I just dont compare it because it is the true arcade version, copy glitches and all.

Awesome video brohan, born in 1991 and this game was always a favorite of mine! Vertigo was my childhood favorite and still is to this day lol, would go to the local Caldors with my parents and would get the action figures for these toys when younger. thanks so much for the upload and deffffff going to upload a remix of sounds from primal rage! this game was like Weapon Lords for Sega Gen in my eyes as an oddball fighting game but a classic in its own right. check out Tail Concerto and for another oddball ps1 fighting game check out Evilzone lol, you totally got my sub brohan, good luck and cant wait to see more :)

Would Primal Rage run on a NEO GEO AES or Neo Geo CD?

The quick answer is yes, although I feel it may seem out of place given the aesthetic of the Neo Geo library, which were all games made specifically for the platform. The long answer is: Primal Rage was based on the Atari GT arcade board, which used a modified 68000 processer. The Neo Geo itself had a 68000 so there's no reason to believe it couldn't perform the operations of Primal Rage. Additionally, Neo Geo was known for its impressive fighters so aside from knowing how to code for either the Atari GT or Neo Geo platforms (which I don't), it still seems like a possible port. Couple that with much weaker systems, like the Genesis/Mega Drive (also a 68000 platform) that did receive Primal Rage. In terms of resolution, color, sound requirements, and even the 4-button control panel, Primal Rage was largely in line with any Neo Geo arcade fighter. The Neo Geo CD was the same hardware with the cart slot swapped for a 1x CD-ROM, so yeah, it was perfectly suited to handle this title as well. The only reason you probably didn't see it ported to Neo Geo (like every other platform in the mid 90s) was simply because SNK only released tailored exclusives to the platform. This was true of many other titles that could have easily been ported to Neo Geo as well.

@@GH101 I'm a yank so it can't be PAL only. Disc says it came out in 1994, so probably Win 3.1 or DOS. I recall it running just fine on XP without any fiddling. Might dig it out and see how it likes Win 7.

The Atari Jaguar CD version is the best, followed probably by the Saturn, 3DO, 32X and PS1, not including the remakes on XBOX, PS2, and I believe Gamecube.

I never say that 32x isn't a 32-bit console, but in re-watching this video I do compare it to the 16-bit versions. Its been manybyears since I made this decision but I would be ot has to do with the release date and medium. It wasn't CD-based like the other 32-bit versions (PS1, Saturn, 3DO) and it was released well before these versions.

I don't think it's a surprised the Saturn is the best. Saturn was always king when it came to fighters and the Saturn Pad is perfect for them. I wonder why they didn't make a cart version for the Jaguar. Atari themselves made the game so it would make sense. I guess they wanted a it on there to push the Jaguar CD but they ported it to every other console anyways. None the less awesome video.

I wish! I did start doing these videos before I knew about DF Retro and clearly didn't have the capture equipment I do now (see my Final Fight video), but I really dug them. atari... still around? should remaster primal rage 1, finish primal rage 2, and release them on xbox one/sx and ps4/5 and switch. then add cross play, etc etc, all modern trimmings etc. release it for 30 bucks! id buy em again! one of my favourite fighters, i know it was janky but it was dinosaurs fighting each other with fatalities!

@@rubberwoody I see. I meant that I was including the 32X version in the 16-bit comparisons because comparing a 32X to the next gen (3DO, Jaguar, PS1, and Saturn) would be unfair. Sure, they are all 32-bit systems (the Jaguar is twin 32-bit), but the hardware, gpu, clock speeds, and memory bandwidth (both in terms of internal RAM and physical storage on game media) are much higher.

Just checken met copy and IT does stream the audio. Are you using a cdr copy maybe? That could bevthe reason IT Will nog stream. It's a common problem with cdr copies. I guess PS one version wins!!!

It’s surprising that the game was rated T for Teen, yet it has gore and bloodly violence. I mean at least it’s not for kids. Teenage audiences are usually acceptable for this level of violence. But in this situation with the pissing Chaos... idk.
