Greetings Battle Brothers, in this week's tactics videos we discuss all the troop options for Blood Angels in 9th Edition of Warhammer 40k. This video hopefully explains why in my opinion Primaris Infiltrators and Incursors are currently our strongest troop choice and why you should consider including these units in all of your army lists. We'll cover each troop choices rules, strengths and weaknesses and then we'll analyse how these guys work well on the battlefield. This video will probably be useful for all Space Marine armies and not just the Blood Angels if you need to figure out the best troop choices in 9th Edition.

Phobos Troops have become what Scouts used to be for BAs back in 8th edition. As a BA player, I found it disappointing not being able to equip Assault Intercessors with some sort of Jump pack or equivalent. The same goes for DC Intercessors. I hope they reconsider that point particularly if they eventually plan to upgrade Sanguinary Guard into Primaris version and get rid off all the classic version units like Tacticals and Regular DC units.

Great video. I've been considering both recently myself and picked up a box. I was going to go Incursors because of points, but you've got me looking at Infiltrators again.

If you just have 1 box I’d probably recommend split it and make 5 of each and see how you like them.

Keep up the great work man, very good insight. Just started 40k with the big box with Necrons and Space Marines. I obviously painted them the appropriate manly shade of red. So just adding more information and troop options is great, love the advice!

Thanks so much for the great rundown and channel overall, really enjoying the content. I have bought one unit of regular intercessors just because I like the models so much and plan on having them secure objectives close to the deployment zone. For that role, what rifles would you equip them with? The stalker for the range? Auto bolt or normal? Thanks so much!

Good video with significant value. My troops depend on what I'm fighting. However, to keep this comment in line with your video, I prefer infiltrators over incursors for my 9th all-comer lists. When looking at models-per-points, it's my opinion that infiltrators are the better option. The 12" bubble on the smaller tables is great. Incursors had greater value with ignoring to-hit-modifiers and cover in 8th. With an already mobile army, infiltrators add more board control over incursors.

Great Video and proves with take and hold being so vital, Phobos units can support this quickly to allow other units to get up the board and attack the enemy. I have 3 units in my current list 2 Incursors, 1 Infiltrators...Did you get my updated list as I think mine is up on Sunday? If my opponent picks this secondary 3 of my Characters are survivable and 2 are just for support and protected. The Warlord and Champion are very survivable, the former protected as well by Sang Guard, the Champion is a spoiler and both not in the thick of it till turn 2-3. The Libby Dread can be protected by the Death Co and the other 2 are protected by the Sang Guard and the Redemptor. Whilst my opponent wastes time trying to get to or set up for my Characters will put their army out of position and make channels for mine by where I would place/move them. I don't have any experience yet playing Blood Angels, but I agree with your statement about holding objectives in 9th being incredibly important. I like the breakdown you provide of what phobos units offer tactically and it's hard to argue against. I think assault intercessors could be more efficient if accompanied by an impulsor. This would allow them to avoid the no-mans land and stay protected moving across the board. Albeit, this comes at ~120 pt price tag. It also keeps the combat threat high as they can take a thunder hammer. A unit of 5 is throwing out 5 TH attacks, and 20 chainsword attacks with savage echoes active. The 5 TH attacks justifies the 2cp to honor the chapter, given an appropriate target and applied buffs. It's hard to say that BAs require this sort of potency out of their troop choices, because the elites slot really fills that need. However, it's nice to have every unit have some teeth in addition to serving an objective secured role. I think a mix of them is good. Phobos for the backfield, assault intercessors for the forward push. They really need that armor to get them where you need them though.

I agree with all you said I think Jon, just I usually run SG, VV and DC so as you say these all fill the same role. Hence my leaning towards Phobos! I feel like BGVs would make better use on an Impulsor, but I guess there’s plenty to consider here! I guess the one main advantage is the obsec from the Assault Ints as you say! Just 120pts for them is an ugly trade off if you ask me.

Based on your recommendations, I ordered 10 phobos troops to include in my new army. So thanks for that, looking forward to using them. I thought about you the other day when I saw a Primaris Dante conversion video. Have you thought about making your own updated Dante?

Great brother, can’t wait for you to try the Phobos units! I have but I recently finished Darkness in the Blood the newest book about the Blood Angels and I think it’s only a matter of time before we get Primaris Dante, so for the moment I am focusing on what’s really competitive and that’s the Chaplain or Captain on a bike.

@@ba_commander I really hope they do give is a new one. I originally played Blood Angels in the mid 90's and I didn't want to use that Dante model back then because I didn't think it was very good!It's a shame because he's a great character. Happy New Year! Hopefully '21 will be Dante's year.

I know that my question is not about the current video, but, i hope u can help me. All people that i see that speak about the sanguinary priest says that he grants the "Assault Doctrine" (and the +1 Attack for Savage Echoes) but the text of the blood chalice says that its just assault doctrine for the attacks of the target miniature, am I not understanding something?

I think the genera understanding of the blood chalice is it places the unit into assault doctrine so it gains the additional attack from savage echoes.

I run a bunch of 10th Company. Infiltrators, Incursors, Eliminators, Warsuits, even scouts sometimes. My most recent edition being a Phobos Librarian. Wish they would improve Reivers though.

@@ba_commander The Special Issue Bolt Pistol being -2 is nice and all but their combat knives are where I find them lacking. A unit that can drop in early yet has little melee capability isn't very practical. At best they're meant more for utility as movement denial or positioned for secondary scoring.

I have been a big fan of Incursors. Kind of a no-brainer. You have made me think twice about considering Infiltrators as well and I may. Their points cost is a bit prohibitive to me where usually I would now just field a bone stock 5 man Tac squad. Every little point can count and there's some units I just want to hide and hold something.

Amazing troop video!!! It helped me a lot.at figuring out what is a go to! Can honor the chapter work after a assassult intersessor unit kills a unit then Consolidates into a different unit and fights again? Is this a thing??

I mean I think it's ok at best, I think we have better ranged support options, I guess if you are trying to fill a troop choice it might be ok.

ive been running incursors and assault intercessors in my games i put the intercessors in a transport the incursors are absolutely great and 10 man squads of assault intercessors are absolutely fantastic at killing plague marines in the few games ive been able to get in especially paired with a sang priest with a jump pack

I think it's probably Incursors, their concealed positions will still provide a lot of value.

I am currently wanting to run Tempestus Scions with a blood angel’s sort of filling the melee role and charging up the battlefield with my scions being the main shooting force. The goal is 1000 points of each but I don’t know what I should run for the blood angels?

I mean typically if you want fast hitting abs mobile BA units you want Sanguinary Guard, Death Company or Vanguard Vets, are you making like a Vanguard detachment as you could fit all 3!

The patrol would consist of a smash captain(thanks for the video on which I should try btw) and a lieutenant with some assault intercessors, and I was thinking some death company for the vanguard elites. I want to make use of my blade guard vets however, so should I include them with a Chaplain and some sanguinary guard? I’m using lamenters so idk how much access the cursed boys have to blood angels stuff lol. I’m totally new to blood angels specifically and I was hoping for tips. Thanks for the reply!

Do you think it would be worth it to bring a phobos librarian if I was bringing 2 units of infiltrators and 2 units of eliminators? Also if so what about psychic powers? I kinda like the idea of casting shrouding on the eliminators so they can't be targeted, then soul site to reroll all hits

Personally I think it's 'gimmicky' and not overly strong, Null Zone or Unleash Rage are much better picks imo.

Good video to start the New Year! I still think you (and many people) overvalue the 12" deny deepstrike ability. It does not protect the rest of the army, just that unit, and even then, does it? It limits the options of what can be DS against that single unit, no pistol only or flamer units for example, and all but prevents a DS and charge against it. At the end of the day one pays +25 points for a 3" of deny for that singular unit (or any units which are within 3" away from its edges, else the next unit's 9" deny takes over.) Is that really worth a JPDC model? For a mere 10 more points 5 Heavy Intercessors can do the same job of backfield security arguably better and tactical marines will be cheaper with more options of dealing with threats. For 180 points two 5 man Tac Squads cover 34% more area for a 28% increase in cost. I do agree that it is hard to take Assault Intercessors without either Transport or mucho cover on the board.

Thanks Pedroig, I guess it depends what’s in your meta and how much deep strike you are dealing with? Did you see my game against the sisters of battle with there 6 deep strike squads? Also I tend to use both infiltrator squads tactically currently to screen huge areas of the board. But I am thinking 1 of those is probably enough! It’s a pity we could get a game against each other some day!

In general, since charging and countercharging are BA fortes, I tend to generally not worry about DS too much. It tends to end poorly, for them. The Sisters seemed to learn that lesson. Even with the DS, they didn't have the overall mobility to contend with bois in red... Since I run successor chapter it would be a viable match lore wise. Currently tend to run Vanguard detachment without any troops at all, unless I add a Patrol. It would be bloody for sure. Maybe when the world gets back to travel normal we can work something out.

@@ba_commander currently running all Firstborn lists, so Tac Marines. Usually one with Heavy Weapon Option for Backfield sitting and the other two with Special Weapons for mobility. For mongrel lists, prefer Heavy Intercessors for backfield, Incursors in front, and ABR Intercessors for the mid.

Sort of, I tend to feel 2 squads might be overkill, and the incursors are better in melee which is the BA ultimate strength!

Not that I do, but if I was to run Assault Intercessors I'd run them as a large unit up to 10 models to guarantee when they do make it up to combat they can pop Honour the Chapter to make their selection worth while...! But I agree Incursors, Infiltrators, and - imo - Auto Bolt Rifle Intercessors (with Serg with Power Fist) are the better Troops for Blood Angels... Now that Tactical marines are 2 wound each there will definitely be a place for them given all their weapon options...not sure on the 'ideal' combo though, either too specific or situational...

They fit well in my army with Eliminators, Scouts with Snipers and Cloaks and Primaries Captain + Leutenant with Ex Tenebris and Master of Ambush. 500 points Forward deploy army with possibility of explosive turn 1.

I believe with Lord of Deceit when you redeploy units it has to be back into your deployment zone (if they were in no mans land with concealed positions) as Concealed Positions is no longer in effect when you 'use' the Lord of Deceit ability...Still useful if you don't want your forward Phobos units overrun, and the redeploy may throw off the opponents plans significantly. I run this if I take the Phobos Librarian, but now trying to decide between him and a Libby with Jump Pack and SM Powers...

Well, they get an extra attack on the charge (4 each average), they are marines so can fit in drop pods and rhino's, can take a wolf guard pack leader so its like having a second leader which is more customizable. It is also a 5-16 man squads but ofc to fit into the drop pods i run them as 9 man squads (to make room for supporting characters).

The special abilities make the Phobos troops so much better. It's a bit disappointing that Assault Intecessors did not get any special ability or increased movement to make them a little more viable on the table.

every time I forward deploy incursors they just either get shot off the board or assaulted off the board turn 1. I honestly have a very hard time keeping 5 unsupported marines alive even when they're in cover :/

@@ba_commander nope, I'm not even making first turn charges with these guys, this would just be a deploy in cover, drop a mine, hold an objective. Even with the mine for charge resistance and the cover for shooting resistance, my opponent basically just points at them and they're gone and I'm wondering why I used 100+ pts like that. At least with my backfield intercessors they tend to be far enough away to not attract much firepower, and my other aggressive units tend to move in blobs, and frequently with something projecting a defensive aura (priest or librarian or such) that my opponent really has to dedicate some real effort to deleting them. Maybe 10 man squads would work better? But that is soooo many points just to hold an objective and put out a relatively minor amount of firepoewer.
