Is your engine hard to prime or even lacks a priming pump? A surprisingly high number of Diesel engines don't have a priming pump or have one that is worn out or doesn't work at all. This video describes how with a couple basic tools, the engine can be primed easily in a couple minutes. If the system doesn't purge the air with the first try, it can be repeated 2 or 3 times to guarantee the entire engine and filters are primed.

Hi, Josh. Thanks for your good video. My 2008 Freightliner M2-106 has a Cummins 6.7 ISB, not a Cat, but the use of a vacuum pump (a manual MityVac) did the trick after I replaced the fuel filter on the engine. I was just about ready to leave on a long trip and was totally frustrated by my engine not starting. I'm a novice to diesel engines so your video really helped me out and saved the expense of having a mechanic come out and do the job.

Thanks for this video. I've previously used the trick on a cat 3126 ( with a single fuel filter ) to "push" the air through the fuel tank with an air compressor on a motorhome. But for obvious reasons, that has it's limitations since you're not removing the fuel pressure regulator. On top of that, it's really a two person job I find with trying to start it, especially if you cracked the fuel filter. Using this approach, I was able to do this today by myself. Most of the time was spent getting to the engine in the bedroom. This is with the motorhome at a huge incline, with the rear end/engine much higher up than the front end/fuel tank.

After everything else failed to get the air out of the system tried this technique and the tractor started up straight away. My tractor has a fuel shut off solenoid valve so it is important to remember to turn the key just enough to energize the coil. Best to double check in the manual. This method is also a good way to check for air bubbles with a clear hose attached which could mean that some of the tractor hoses have perished from the fuel tank . I was waiting to see the bubble clear while you were pulling a vacuum, but you must have had a leak at the connection, allowing air to enter there. Turning off the vacuum and the bubbles clearing confirmed that the system was purged of air. Nice.

You can use one of those squeeze type priming bulbs you normally find on boat outboard motors to bring fuel up from the tank in a pinch rather than wasting time and draining the battery and wearing the starter cranking away for minutes on end

I just bled my system with the grease suction type gun. I put a valve on the clear line, so that when I pulled the plunger out I waited for the vacuum to pull as much air/diesel as it could. Once that pull stroke was finished I closed the valve. I emptied the gun into the fuel tank, hooked it back up pulled another stroke. I did it about 10-12 times till the fuel came out mostly bubble free. Hooked it back up and it started in about 20 sec of cranking. (mbn cat). The brake bleeder with the cup would have been easier for sure

Dang nice simple trick i got a 3116 in a wheel loader with 3 fuel filter one is upside down . No primer . It is a bear to get going after a service . I really should look in sis to see what primer pump option is available but till then I will try this next time 👍

Lock-N-Lube has a dual action transfer pump ( P/N LNL-159 ) . It works well $32.04 direct from LNL . Shame it is Made in China , it does have some quality built into it . Apply silicone paste to the piston seal assembly . To straighten the pump lines place a 7/16” and 3/8” rod in the hoses and heat up with a heat gun hot , leave rods inside and let completely cool . 10/30/23

very enlighten. as all of your vids are. my issue is I've changed the fuel pump (high pressure). and now my engine will not turn over. I'm assuming I have air in system. I have a ISX 15 2250 and I have no idea how to remove air from system. any insight will be appreciated. thanks and keep the videos coming along

I use an old C15 transfer pump with a suction line and a -4 line to a compucheck fitting. Just click it on the filter base and spin it with a drill.

+David O'Neal That is a good idea. Those will build up to the 145 psi mark depending on the regulator.

Adept Ape a transfer pump off a SDP or LEE works the best since the regulators are set to 310 psi. Just cut the drive gear off and use a 1/2" Chuck.

Hi, great video, does it have to be attached to the return line? It's much easier for me to get to my supply line from the tank. Also this won't put diesel into the injectors, only the pump?

If I am understanding correctly, when you turn the orange valve off on your brake bleeder, you are not turning off the collection bottle flow or releasing the vacuum, you are simply closing the vacuum source and letting the existing vacuum finish equalizing by pulling more air and fuel into the sample bottle. Am I understanding this correctly? As other have commented, this might need to be done multiple times if vacuum source or sample bottle size are limited.

Hey man, great video,bookmarked it for tuneup time. I have 2 school buses both with 2002 Thomas w/CAT 3126, one has a check engine light. Though I do not know how to get the codes. I second this suggestion. Having the link in the description makes it easy to find a product that in your experience works well. If it is not against any rules, perhaps you could also mention what the item cost at the time you recommended it just in case some enterprising Amazon dealer decides to charge a premium due to the increased demand you generate! ;-) And a disclaimer if you received any compensation either for the link or otherwise. In the meantime, can you tell us the name and model of the orange air powered brake bleeder in your video? It was not on the first few pages of Amazon search, but I did find three that were similar, and at least one of them appears to be a 'knockoff', the other two may be just rebranded same item. One of these was "OTC (8104) Vacuum Brake Bleeder" $106 and the other "PRIVATE BRAND TOOLS PBT70850 Vacuum Brake Bleeder (SpeedyVacâ„¢) " $115

Hey AA, great channel that has helped me so much. I have a semi-related question. I'm replacing my C-16 hand primer pump (it's leaking). Does the gasket need any sealant/etc, or do I just put it on using the raw dry gasket? Thanks!

I really don't like using sealants like silicone with gaskets, unless you have to try and make a damaged flange seal. You can use a little high tack if you want, seems to help a bit.

Have a question. I've got a c15 cat. When driving the truck the engine light comes on and blinks once every sec. If I first crank it and just idel the light does not come on. If I do a check for codes it give a 55 . For my understanding mean no faults had put on a test at a loves still shows not active are deactive code. What could be making the light to come on?

I have a 3116 225hp I would like to delete the primer pump cause it’s the rubber bulb style. I’ve heard these have a tendency to leak air when they go bad. I looked up the Racor fuel water separator one on it now looks to be the 445r. The 645r looks to be similar except no primer and a few more inlets and out lets. Is this a good replacement and would I be able to add a different primer if not where would I hook up to prime it like you did in the video. Thank you

i have a cold start problem on my 2003 d4d corolla. If i press the fuel primer button, it starts much better. What is your diagnoses of the cold start problem eg fuel pressure too low in an injector. All injectors sound perfect though and electrical resistance is 1.2 ohms, so ok ?

Hey friend.. i got a new klein non contact tester.. its a great tool! Thanks for the advice.. does it could detect if the sensor isnt working right.. i mean it detects the reference voltage and detects when the ecm sends it.. and it works only if you make the acceleration or if you make the function in the sensor.. Hey man do you use diesel.compression. tools often? Im thinking in get a very nice kit for 50 dollars the thing is that im trying to raise the business by myself.. is just that in my last jobs we didnt have enough tools.. Could Worth it? Tony Ibarra Yes it will. Paccar engines already have a bleed screw built in. It should be close to the water fuel separator against the engine. Loosen the nutt, usually 9/16 and start priming.
