@bearnaff9387 4 месяца назад
@@MedullanAutononomous She did that back in... 2018 or something? Hers isn't a primitive channel, she's just homesteading a gentlewoman's farm outside the village. She's milled a bunch of her own lumber because felling and milling her own trees is cheaper than ordering lumber for delivery and hauling from the road, not because she's really DIY'ing everything. By all means, watch what you want, but the only person seeming to strictly adhere to the all-primitive ethos is Primitive Technology. Even our man Duong follows the ethos of "demonstrate the primitive method while it is educational, then only maintain as much self-made primitive material as is necessary for future demonstrations." Surely you've noticed that he's switched to charcoal made elsewhere for his smithing. He showed how to make charcoal by hand, and when it no longer served his educational purpose to be "authentic", he switched to the method that allowed him to make better videos more quickly. It's one of the things I like about him a lot. Unlike the actually-fake "bamboo villa in the jungle" dudes, Duong demonstrates the techniques he utilizes in full before a project is finished off camera. It's a good balance between authenticity and entertainment. I think it shows a real talent and appreciation for making old-fashioned actually educational Discovery Channel-style television.

It impresses me that your bellows has worked all these years without appearing to need repair or replacement. You can go months without needing it, but when you sit down it's ready to serve. When you originally made it I hadn't yet learned that Duong always knows what he's doing, and I thought the design was silly. I have since learned better, but this bellows is a particularly strong example of how wrong I was.

You can do a proffesional paints from such latex rubber. You just need to add some fillers such as limestone and dyes. If you want to prepare a black vulcanized rubber then you need to add sulfur to white latex rubber. This vulcanization is usually carried out by mixing crushed rhombic sulfur with rubber, and the obtained paste is applied to hard pressure rollers called calenders, where the previously mentioned cross-linking reaction takes place at a temperature of approximately 150 °C. Depending on the vulcanization conditions, the type of rubber used and the sulfur to rubber ratio, harder or softer types of rubber can be obtained. The higher the cross-linking density of the rubber, the less flexible (harder) and slower the rubber wears.

Theoretically, you should be able to use rubber to make rubber bands (rubber circles) and use those in more complex machinery. Now, I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to machines, mechanics, but you should be able to use rubber bands to store kinetic energy and release it to make certain jobs easier. Rubber bands can be used instead of rope, to hold things together. Rubber string can be used in the same way. You can also try to use the rubber to waterproof your tools, clothes, spaces, buckets, small cracks. Rubber also helps you grip onto things easier, so you could either make rubber gloves, or coat your tools in rubber to prevent your hands from slipping while holding onto them. I think rubber can melt if you expose it to high temperatures, which should make it easier for you to create different rubber shapes (cast rubber) or coat things with rubber. You can also make rubber molds. I think that Concrete doesn't stick to rubber, so you could make LOTS of concrete bowls or cups VERY quickly if you have the right rubber mold made. You could also use rubber to trap air. (I don't know what that can be used for, but I think an engineering/your mind could make use of this). You know Rubber Balloons? You could make those with the rubber you had made and maybe there could be a use for this? Could use rubber balloons to cast concrete bowls out of them. When the rubber is still liquid, you can actually color it too. Could make black rubber, brown rubber, green rubber if you want for more colors. You could make a long rubber string and add it to your forge fire air tube blower.. thing (not sure what to call it). You know, that thing that makes your fire grow bigger and stronger when you push air into it? You can use the rubber string, so that the fire blower handle will slide back into place on its own, without you having to push on the handle. Or, you could use rubber to make a fireplace bellows. It's another, alternative way to blow air into your fire.

Make a cloth bag with only a small hole at one end. Then fill it full of soil. Now paint it with latex, allowing it to dry each time. Repeat this until the latex is thick enough. Now empty the soil out. Now you have an airtight bag for the bellows! You could make the bag in a triangular shape, and put wood over and under it to protect the latex. Like a traditional European bellows. You could also make a Rucksack that is totally waterproof!

also, there is something you may be able to do to the rubber called vulcanization, which may improve it's properties, though frankly I don't know if it works on latex. theoretically, if you heat the rubber with sulfur in a air-free environment (maybe a clay capsule with a tiny hole so it doesn't explode when heated) it will get firmer, but that is a naïve simplification of a process I don't fully understand

(31:20) Now I begin to realize why each of the plantations was quite large. Plus that the latex collection faded to near-zero after some time. Which required moving the harvesting to a new plantation with new trees. And that the plantations were re-planted in a cycle of 2 (to 3?) years.

I wonder if mixing in some soot particles (like carbon black) would increase the UV resistance of the rubber?

I think that somthing called a "spile" desired for gathering tree sap from maple trees would be useful for extracting rubber from rubber trees.

(37:27) My impression is that the rollers squeeze out the water, yes. But the overall size is not increased as much as the final thickness suggests. The final latex sheets seem more COMPRESSED than when in their original state. Would you agree with that thought?

@@PrimitiveSkillsnet You are most graciously welcome; you alleviate a deep fear - the terror of being disconnected from a meaningful and healthy human tradition. My grandparents would have been derisive of us both, but I never learned a single useful skill from either of them.

He used to. Now he gets it in. He shows us the process at the beginning then swaps over due to time constraints. Unless you have a handy village nearby, it simply is not possible to produce videos on time. If you wanted him 100% honest then it would be months between videos.

in the future straining them with cloth should help to get rid of the bits of bark and leaves so you don't have to do it by hand...

I read somewhere that aztecs and mayans in south america used to press the tree sap into clothing to give it water proofing. There is probably hundreds of uses just for the sap alone.

In Russia, birch sap is harvested in spring in April and May, it is delicious and healthy, and in order not to injure the bark of the tree, some tricks are used. You need to take a 5mm drill bit and make a small hole in the tree, then insert a cocktail tube into it. The juice will run through a tube into your container, while the tree is not injured in any way and in this way you can collect a lot of juice. 😉

The small knife for the rubber trees reminded me of a crooked knife used for wood carving. Their blades are bent in a smooth curve instead of at a sharp angle to make a blade shaped like the letter J. They are excellent for hollowing wood for making spoons or cups.
