We build a survival bow and arrows from an alder tree and para cord and use it to bow fish rainbow trout from a stream. The arrow is built from a tree branch and wrapped in snare wire and barb wire from an old rusty fence. The hooks are also built from barb wire fence wire, to complete a full survival fishing tackle box. The full Survival Fishing Playlist: • Survival Fishing Chall...

This is part of a full series on survival fishing where we use repurposed materials from wherever we can find them in order to try to catch fish.

We raid the junk pile in the forest for discarded, but useful materials including metals like bar wire, fence wire, discarded metal tools and whatever else we can use to spear, or catch fish in this epic survival fishing challenge.
In a survival situation, it might surprise you to still be able to find many hand tools and discarded modern artifacts that are useful in building spears and fishing hooks. The key to survival is to use whatever you find available. Junk is often left over and lasts for years before it is reduced back to it's natural form. Metals can be worked and sharpened to make useful survival tools from fish hooks, to fish spears.

River cane makes excellent bows and arrows
@MrTacklebury
@MrTacklebury 4 года назад
When you are doing a live wood survival bow, you need to leave the bark on, so the springiness doesn't leave as it dries. If you are making a bow with dry wood, you have to go through the whole process of seasoning the wood, shaping the bow, backing the bow and then tillering etc, prior to trying to bend it, otherwise it will almost always break. Suckers around the base of many trees make good survival arrows also. In Canada, many Native Americans used hazel wood shoots. Also, for small game, river reeds can be cut off in the fall as they dry standing straight up, then you can bundle many together to "straighten" and then just insert a wooden nock on one end and a flat blunt on the other using some hide glue or wrapping it with the little strands on the inside of your 550 cordage. When making a traditional fishing arrow, make it about 3-4 feet long, then on the end to spear the fish, narrow two sides to make it look like a very long knife blade, then on one side cut notches in with a knife. This penetrates deeply and the notches ratchet up on the fish skin etc and keeps them from falling off too easily. This way you don't need any metal. Just fire harden the tip slightly.
@whenyou5155
@whenyou5155 3 года назад
I'm curious, when arrows are made properly, how often do they break?
@MrTacklebury
@MrTacklebury 3 года назад
@@whenyou5155 Almost anytime they hit on their side as they fishtail leaving the bow. Depending on the level of flex and poundage of the bow. The very light reed arorws can be very weak and only require a slight bow with 25 max foot pounds. They are designed for birds or small game though. Actual wooden arrows, I use cedar, rarely break, except when inside game that is running. If you don't get a pass-thru on the game, they are sticking out and the first thing most stuck animals do is try to run to hide in the thickest brush possible. That's the most common way they break.
@TheGrmany69
@TheGrmany69 3 года назад
That depends of the wood, ipe doesn't need curation, it's hard and flexible in itself.

They used wild rose bush shafts to make their arrows. They'd build a fire and heat the spots that were bent, then they'd hold it in place until the arrow cooled. Once they were happy with the straightness, they'd attach the arrow head, knock and tail feathers

There are several things you could do that would help. On a bow as light as the ones you made for fishing use your thumb and a bent index ginger to hold the end of the arrow instead of your typical 3 finger hold. If the end of the arrow is flat or has a shallow nock, when you draw the bow back the arrow has to remain centered until you release it. Use the piece of wire like a drill bit, turning it back and forth in a circular motion with your wrist as the drill, until you wear a hole though the arrow about 1 1/2 inches from the tip. Once through bend the wire ends back towards the rear of the arrow as flat as you can get it. the gap should be about 1/4 inch once it springs back. That's enough to hold it in the fish. Take your string and fold back about 6 inches so the string is doubled up. Tie a simple overhand knot with the loop about 2 inches long, when the knot is tightened it will be extremely strong. Bend the bow and at the other end see how long you need your string to be, mark it with your finger. Add about 1 inch and double it over and tie another overhand knot, the knot will use most of the 1 inch you added. Cut off the excess string and you have your bow string.

If fishing a gorge hook you gotta let em have it for a while. It need to be all the way in their stomach that way when you pull it turns sideways and will not come out. A lot of times when checking lines with gorge hooks the fish would be dispatched from the gorge from what I’ve heard and read.
