I had a friend who was the manager for a local band called Sharon Tate. They opened for Primus when they played in my town back in the early 90s. We were introduced to Primus and they asked us where to go after the show to drink. We told him about this little hick bar and Les paid the owner to close down and let about 20 of us drink until 5am. I can remember doing karaoke to Iron Man and the owner sang Don Ho's Tiny Bubbles while standing on the bar. I still have all 3 of those CDs + Pork Soda and Miscellaneous Debris.

This was the first song I heard from Primus waaaaay back when I was in middle school. I was talking to a friend on the phone while listening to music on some FM radio/alarm clock I had, and some lady called in to the station when they were doing requests and requested this song. I fell in love with it immediately and looked up a few more songs from them at the time.

Les Claypools discography is one of if not the best, you've got pure 90s sounds from primus, duo de twang, frog brigade, buckethead, phish, the police, supergroups all around. With Primus, and basically any project Les has been a part of, the talent, skill and musicianship are never in question. It's always just whether the song speaks to you or not. I love this one, but I have no problem admitting there are songs on their albums I just skip.

As somebody who's burned out their whole discography, i'll try to give you a few hard-hitting suggestions. A few are Electric Uncle Sam, The Return of Sathing Willoughby, wynona's big brown beaver, The Carpenter and The Dainty Bride, The Last Superpower AKA Rapscallion, and The seven. I only listed so many because these are some of the songs i've literally melted into my brain lmao

The genius of this song is the “in the pocket” of rhythm between the drums and bass. I have all their albums on vinyl and this isn’t a great song but it’s a fun one that just makes you want to move with that grove.

Great point about the vocals. More about the "pitch" and the "sound", using his voice, whatever it might be, as another instrument. I also find this to be the case with many heavier bands. Can't rightly understand the actual "lyrics" upon first hearing, but they use their "sound" as an additional instrument. And then once you read the lyrics, or once you start to be able to understand what is being said, it gives an additional layer to their music. Goatwhore, IA, Cannibal Corpse are all hard to understand right away, but they layer in their vocals so correctly into the tunes, they are enjoyable even if you can't understand a word. Like Rammstein, I don't understand a word of it. Like it's a different language altogether or something.

Spend any time in a small town and you probably have seen Mr Mudd. Town mechanic, always around the shop or running the gas station. 3 or 4 sets of blue coveralls in his closet which he wears 24/7. You'll never see him without his dip, except maybe Saturday nights around 9:00 p.m. at the Waffle House won't be talked down to or disrespected house-proud City-folk.

I never got into Primus but have heard this song...strange. If I remember correctly, it got quite a bit of radio play on the local rock radio station. Must've just been a favorite of one of the dj's.

He's not an undertaker. He's being joking about having just murdered a guy who was big rude and had stinky breath. He was saying the man started an argument and in a very southern supressed guy(mud) took his head off with a bat then was burrying him in the woods. his character is portraying a very boring person who shines his shoes and keeps them up for no reason and then messed up the guy who argued with him. And smiling while he did it. It's an extreme fucked up violent underdog with a grin.

Primus has 2 drummers. The first drummer Jay Lane left after Frizzle Fry. Tim Alexander joined and stayed until Green Naugahyde where Jay returned for 1 album. (Tim had a heart attack but returned later). *Tim is the first drummer for Puscifer as well!

3 drummers : There's also Brain (Bryan Mantia) who played on the Brown Album, Rhinoplaysty and Antipop album. He also was in C2B3.

I never know what their songs are about. No meaning. Lol. Just a fun band, but Claypool is one of the best bassist ever. Love your reaction, as always, David. ✌ Also a little tidbit, he auditioned for a new bassist for Metallica back in the day, but they passed and said he was too advanced for them. 😉

Even if you don't care for this song, go look up Primus - My Name Is Mud - Woodstock 94 for your own listening. Claypool has bit of a problem with the Woodstock crowd with regards to this song. Much hilarity ensues.

A great asset is the ability to not take yourself too serious and to be able to have a laugh even at your own expense while still being a serious musician!!!

Take a look at their song/video "Mr Krinkle" Its awesome. Fun fact: Their guitarist Larry Lalonde was a member of the Death Metal band Possessed back in the '80s. 1984-1987 I believe. Before joining Primus. A complete change of style to say the least :)

Primus became a bit more eclectic further into their career. This song sounds completely different than Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, which sounds completely different than Lacquer Head. I feel you on this one, it is a very left field song that can be a bit hard to take in. I like it personally, but I get you. Definitely don't call it quits on them here, though. I hope you give some other stuff from their later catalogue a try. The two songs I mentioned are excellent starting points. Also, check out The Claypool Lennon Delirium. It's a project Les has with Sean Lennon, and from what I've heard of them so far, it's good stuff. Much more prog and psychedelic than his stuff with Primus. Little Fishes is the first one I heard from them. Might be a decent one to start off with.

My worn out suck on this shirt is my most complimented shirt to this day. How have you not heard this song? I wouldn't say He's the best bass player in the world but definitely my favorite! I've met Les 3 times, couldn't have been cooler. The first time was outside the Riviera in Chicago hours before the doors opened I was walking by to meet a friend I was going to the show with and out of nowhere he was right there and I just said WHOA! and he stopped and said hey whats up man and I don't remember anything else he said lol Just that I said oh my God about 50 times like a star struck idiot but so cool. And that show someone got their own bass to the front row, he saw it and had security hand it to him, he tuned it unmuted and played the awakening solo on it and handed it back. How cool is this guy! Yep kinda disappointed at your score, but I'm a primus geek lol. Hell my wifi is even named primus! 😁

Great review! If I could make a suggestion? Claypool has a band with John Lennon's son Sean called The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Check out their official video for "Bubbles Burst." This is a bonus if you were ever a fan of Michael Jackson. Trust me ,You'll see. Old school Psychedelia!

Check out Bridear / Light In The Dark. From the time when they were great. Not saying they suck now, but this song is from the time when they had the best line-up. I don't ever really care about the video some of the words don't even make sense in most their videos or songs to me it's always been just a reason to play jam out you're the awesome tones but I do love this once this song it's up there with a few others like devil went down to Georgia and what not it's just fun
