Another band you should check out at some point is called Static-X, they bill themselves as "Evil Disco" (used to be Death Disco). Push It, I'm With Stupid, and Cold are all songs by them that are worth listening too. For more Primus check out the video for Lee Van Cleef.
this is like going back to 1860 and saying "notice how there are no cars. people used to walk for fitness and used eco-safe alternatives like horses and wagons."
@@jamelakajamal you should check out Over the falls by Primus it's a great example of how Primus is very diverse with its music. Keep up the great work my friend!!
@@voodude8986 or fisticuffs!!! Love me the brown album. I remember seeing a concert where someone was yelling at les in between songs to play puddin taine. He immediately pointed to him and said "no" very confidently. Hilarious claypool
Les Claypool: "I was in the trades, so I was a carpenter for a number of years before I was able to quit and make a living noodling my fingers around. And I've been around a lot of guys-especially older union guys. Some of these guys are friends with my father. They're getting older and, to keep up with the young guys, do some crank during the day or before they start work. Some guys drink a bunch of coffee, some guys drink a bunch of coffee and do some crank. I was amazed at how much methamphetamine-and this was twenty-plus years ago-was in the trades. And for better or worse, it's fueled a lot of progress in the construction arena. But the flame that burns twice as bright burns only half as long-which I say at the end of the song."
He’s not wrong about the trades. Witnessed plenty of that on job sites. I’ve worked with junkies from all the big street drugs. From meth to crack to pills and smack. Never got into that stuff myself. I had a Mountain Dew addiction.
@@LawrenceFadalong His character isn't even a hillbilly, if you actually listen to his music, it has more of a funk feel to it because Les is into Funk music. Really pisses me off when Primus fans can't tell the difference between bluegrass and funk. Hillbillies are super patriotic and Les is always singing about how shit America is, Hence this song and American Life. He is wearing that American flag shirt most likely for irony. Wynonas Big Brown Beaver is quite literally the only bluegrassy type of song they have. Even then, the music video clearly has them dressed as country dudes.
@@fastfaps It's the 15th most popular Primus video/song on RU-vid. Nice try though wannabe Primus-Expert hipster. I bet you listened to them before anyone else even heard of them.
I'm 58 yrs. young and I want to Thank You for introducing me to "Primus". I haven't liked a new band in years. They're great!! This is by far my favorite reaction video. You are one funny man!!
I remember one of their posters in the 90s advertising one of their albums had a tagline on the bottom that said "if you didn't like primus before, you probably still won't". so good
@@chef2542 I got to go fishing with him once about twenty years ago. My dad's friend is a fishing guide in Wisconsin and and a bass player who used to know a lot of bands. One day he pulled into our driveway with his boat and Les Claypool in the truck with him. He had to get a few muskie lures back that my dad borrowed but anyway I went along but besides how awesome it was to actually be hanging out with Les Claypool it was a mundane experience and it almost could have been anybody. Les did catch two Northerns and two walleye. None of us got any muskies.
@@dickJohnsonpeterman, what a story, that's amazing, I've heard of him being big into fishing and even heard stories of him and Getty from Rush catching fish together
It seemed Les was a little offended when Metallica said he needed to do his own thing. I got to admit they were right. He was much better off doing his own thing and the crowd proves it. I've seen them myself a few times. He's is incredibly talented and when he collaborates with Buckethead its insane.
He was actually upset with James because James lied during the interview. In later interviews Les has said that both James and Lars were being a giant dick to him when he tried out. He went to try out for the band for Kirk whom he was good friends with.
Fugazi has awesome bass lines in fact a lot of music the singing becomes secondary to my ear I pick up on the rhythm section and fugazi is a band that the lyrics and singing grows on me but the bass and drums are really good
Primus - Welcome To This World, DMV, Professor Nutbutter’s House Of Treats and Southbound Pachyderm. All solid tunes with awesome drums and bass...and aren’t too wacky. P.s. Primus sucks...
One of the most talented 3 pieces ever assembled with a sound nobody has come close to replicating since. Les Claypool is a GOD on bass with a thumb that could slap the shit out of Mike Tyson!
you know i was thnking the other day a lot of my favorite acts (primus, death grips/hella/wavves, rush,,, etc) all have the same defining feature of minimal yet extremely complex sounds. making a lot with a little. no more than 3 members at most in any of em as well. sometimes just 2.
Primus once did a cover of Pink Floyd's Have a Cigar, and Les Claypool had another band called the Fearless Frog Brigade who did a whole live album cover of Animals.
That was a live recording of the second set of his Halloween ball. They teased the Wall with have a cigar first set, then came out playing Animals in entirety the one album Floyd never played live due to completely.
It’s funny when people who don’t know anything about prints sees a clip of a concert with thousands of fans chanting. “Primus Sucks!!!!” And get so confused, thinking they’re trying to boo them off the stage when in fact they’re loving every bass-tumping guitar-squealing moment. So yeah... in case you didn’t get it... “Primus Sucks!!!” Is a good thing. Pretend it’s opposite-day, every day there’s a Primus concert! Lol! PRIMUS SUCKS!!!!!
Mort Mort Mort seen GWAR about 100 times before Brockie passed big ole alien cock spewing all over never got old for some disturbing reason 🤣🤣 but i just can’t get into the “new” singers style. He was with GWAR way back in the early days and left and i respect his history with the group just miss Dave and always will.
@@casvandijck9338 it took an embarrassing amount of time for me to recognise them lol, I must’ve been like 10 and I seen them on Saturday night rage, I can’t remember the guest host but I remember too many puppies 🙌
Woodstock '94 was insane, but Primus is always an amazing concert experience. His new band, The Claypool Lennon Delerium is also an amazing experience. Both of their two albums are fantastic and trippy as hell.
The Claypool Lennon Delirium is one of those weird collaborations that no one would have thought of but when you hear it, it makes perfect sense (kinda like when El-P and Killer Mike started "Run The Jewels"). Just about everyone I've shown it to loves it, including my girlfriend. :D
My first Primus concert was at the Roskilde Festival in ´97. I was a 19 year old mega fan & they were amazing! The crowd wasn´t this crazy, but it wasn´t far from it. Now I´ve seen them 4 times and Duo de Twang (Les´ acoustic music/comedy project with the original Primus guitar player, who was in the band before Larry joined) once. They´re still great, but nothing beats that original first experience. To me, that was 60 minutes in heaven (At some point I also made out with some girl about my age at the time, who I only remember as being attractive, but too sweaty) and in true 90´s rock concert fashion, the day after my neck was sore as hell from headbanging and my body had lots of black marks I had no idea where came from. Back then a lot more people went crazy at concerts & it was huge adrenaline rush that´s hard to beat.
There is a longer version of this very performance at Woodstock '94 that has been mostly edited out of recordings that I find nowadays, but in the middle of that bass solo he breaks out into "The Star Spangled Banner" like Jimi Hendrix did in '69. That version exists on the live CD that was released in '94.
My all time favorite Primus song. Seeing this live or Primus in general is freaking amazing. He and Justin Chancellor two of the best bass players ever. Just saw Primus for the 6th time last month
Fun fact Les tried out for Metallica back in the day. Story goes that apparently he was playing Kirk Hammets parts on a bass and Metallica was so blown away the just stood there for a minute staring. Then James just looked at him and told him that he needs to just do his own thing cause he is was to good for Metallica. Best band of th 90s in my opinion. Three dudes that make more noise than anyone and some how make it sound original and legendary.
One thing for sure about primus is that once you do get into their more popular songs, you'll definitely grow to love their much more odd and reclusive ones. Definitely looking forward to more primus reactions in the future, but for now I'll recommend rumble of the diesel or American life.
PRIMUS SUCKS 🤘 It's a term of endearment for fans😉 Entertaining for sure, not for everyone but now u know what cool folks like me was listening to coming up😂😂 There's so much music out there people don't even know they like because they're unwilling to step outside the comfort zone!! If u ever get a chance please react to some Howling Wolf Smokestack Lightening!!! One of the many roots of the great tree of music💯 Much ♥️from Bama 🙋♀️💕
The Primus sucks thing was a joke that the band came up with years ago. Les has gone on record saying that he doesn't like it anymore and wishes he never said it, but dumb people still end up chanting it at shows even though the band no longer likes it.
@@waynestumbo2408 I first saw Primus in 1989. I've seen them and Les other projects over 30 times. I'm aware of the tradition and that they don't suck. Les just said years ago he was tired of hearing it and that the joke wasn't funny to him anymore. But whatever ...
Love the videos and commentary. Subscribed. If you life Primus, then you'll love Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade ("Frog Brigade" for short). Songs to check out: Buzzards of Green Hills; Long in the Tooth; Upon on the Roof; Ding Dang; David Makalaster; as well as the Pink Floyd covers, e.g. Pigs (Three Different Ones). If you're looking for a new band, check out Heilung. Songs to check out: Alfadhirhaiti, Krigsgaldr; Galgaldr; Svanrand; In Maidjan; Traust; Norupo; Othan. Heilung is organic, rhythmic, Nordic metal derived from ancient texts that describe lives and events of Nordic people in the face of constant Viking and Roman assault. The latter songs in the above list are more mellow.
Just to let you in on the joke jamel, when the band was first coming up they introduced themselves to a crowd "we're primus" and someone in the crowd screamed "PRIMUS SUCKS!!!" Ever since then Les would often introduce the band as "we're primus and we suck". Primus Sucks has been the semi-official chant for primus fans ever since.
Listen to a new band called Goose, they sound like a better version of the Grateful Dead {a true jam band} “they said we are Goose” so the crowd says the name like they are getting booooood
"Sit back and have a cup 'o joe, and watch the wheels go round." The Woodstock performance is my favorite version of this song. Watching Les Claypool march around the stage to keep time is nothing short of fucking majestic.
If you're feeling festive this time of year, you should check out Pearl Jam doing Stevie Wonder's "Some Day at Christmas", or them covering the Sonics' "Don't Believe in Christmas", or even their original "Let Me Sleep (It's Christmas Time)". For context, the latter is a song about being homeless around Christmas.
Les is the GOAT hands down ! Tim Alexander is a god behind those drums because in a 3 piece band the drummer always has to make up for empty space (hence) Neil Pearl or Stewart Copeland … it’s strange to see Larry taking a step back on the guitar ! Here’s to my rhythm section. It’s the meat and potatoes of the band that gets unrecognised. Great vid !
If you're digging Primus you should definitely check out his side projects, he works with so many talented musicians. Frog Brigade and Oysterhead are my favorites. Bucket of Bernies Brains and Holy Mackerel were also fun.
That one and Pressman are two Primus songs I never really got. Maybe they're cool performed live at a real intimate venue, but I think the studio versions are kinda boring, plus they have roughly the same chorus riff and appear way to close to each other on the most boring part of an otherwise great album. If I were to cut ANY tracks from that album (which is one of my all-time favorites), it'd be those two tracks. (Hell, I'd even keep the title track and "Hail Santa")
@@Dhakadice hail santa is absolute garbage, nature boy is a total banger though, primus is one of my favorite bands ever but hail santa is atrocious!!! How dare you!!!
@@loftin92 Yeah, but it works in context. I agree that Nature Boy is better than Pressman, but I still feel like putting those two songs on the same album (and so close to each other) makes the entire middle feel like filler.
Just saw them live opening for slayer at Slayers second to last show ever. At The Forum. Have a few videos of Primus and Slayer. Never saw Primus before. They were excellent. And played many of the songs I was hoping to hear.
Check out Pseudo Suicide by Oysterhead, it's one of Claypool's side projects/supergroups. The live vid is one of the best I've seen. Check out Buzzards of Greenhill as well, please. Pseudo Suicide - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LhH3fsRni54.html Buzzards of Greenhill (w/Jimmy Herring) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RQBT3N2bHh4.html
I would give anything to have experienced one of the three Woodstock’s. My obsession with 99 is ungodly, despite the chaos anyone who ever attended says it was the best week of their life.
Les did it better himself. "Hello all you boys 'n girls, I'd like to take to the inside world, it's a plenty irregular place to be, but never fear, you're safe with me... Well, maybe..."
Gotta check out some Nine Inch Nails! The Woodstock performance of "Reptile" or playing "Something I Can Never Have" on the piano then "Down in It" since everyone usually goes straight to "Closer"
If Primus would just have added an an above average singer/songwriter they could have been huge; rather than a novelty band with an exceptional rhythm section.
I was wondering if someone was going to suggest that. It's such a hypnotizing sound. Kinda hits the subconscious like that musical instrument called a 'Jews Harp'.. at least it always has for me.. goosebumps every time I hear those instruments.
As much as people talk about how great Les Claypool is, and he's probably the goat at bass, the guitarist Larry LaLonde is the unsung hero of this band.
