Prince was quite simply a musical genius. No other way to put it. This particular song, Purple Rain, never fails to give me goosebumps. Such a powerful, beautiful song.

How any one person can have so much talent is quite beyond me. He was a pure musical genius.

Purple Rain isn't a feeling or a mood...it's a place somewhere between love and agony. It still hurts my heart that he's gone. The day he died, people all over the world stopped their day to sing this song in his honor. It was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. 💜

Oh WOW! I’m actually in Minneapolis right now for the annual 4 day PRINCE CELEBRATION. It’s the 40th Anniversary of Purple Rain and it’s excited to visit his recording complex Paisley Park. We listened to a bunch of unreleased music today. It’s been a blast! Hope you enjoy this. 💜

I never forget the impact that concert and especially Purple Rain guitar solo had on me. It's my favorite solo of all time. He put so much soul, love, passion and energy into that solo. It's a bit embarrassing that the majority didn't consider Prince as one of the best gutarists until his nice Hall of Fame performance in 2004.

I'm SO happy you got to experience this version of Purple Rain. It's my absolute favorite and his guitar solos were other worldly. His Sign o' the Times album is my absolute favorite complete album, but this is my favorite live performance of a particular song. He was magical and after listening to him for 40 years it's such a treat to watch people experience him for the first time. Thank you! 💜

I’ve watched this reaction video several times. I remember when I first saw this performance. The concert was released on VHS and I rented it from my local video store. I watched it as many times as possible while I had it. Then I took my tape recorder and taped the audio on cassette so I could listen to it. I get goosebumps every time watching this performance and now that he’s gone sometimes teary eyed.

Saw this 6 times in person in L.A. at 18 in 1985. LOVED every second of it, but never could have imagined that it would still give me chills and tears almost 40 years later.

I was a huge fan of Prince especially after the Purple Rain release. One of the finest live performances I've ever seen is when he performed Purple Rain on the Amerivan Music Awards. He absolutely brought the house down that night.

In 1993 I was flying from San Francisco back home to Boston on a Northwest Airlines flight. I got upgraded to first class. When I got to my window seat, I had to ask Prince if I could squeeze by to get to my seat. I did my best not to act like an obnoxious fan. I didn't even ask for an autograph. But I'll never forget our discussion about The Who's album Quadrophenia. He said it is one of his favorite albums of all time. The man simply loved music and being a musician. We shook hands at the end of the flight. I couldn't believe how much of a Who fan he was.

That was incredible! WOW! I've never seen him unleash his fire like that. I've seen the film, "Purple Rain", and I've seen the R&RHOF George Harrison tribute, and he's excellent in those performances. But this was astonishing! At first, I was a little skeptical at why it was getting stretched out, in the beginning. But, good Lord, did he blow it up! Amazing!

I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE being at that concert. I can't believe 16 minutes went by so quickly but what an experience! Kind of like listening to Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do". That was magic. PLEASE review the Hall of Fame performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" that included Tom Petty, Steve Winwood and Prince. That guitar solo was amazing.

The 15th of July 2011, i was blessed to have the chance to see him live, during one of the biggest jazz festival of the world, in Perugia Italy 🇮🇹. With Pink Floyd is been the best concert of my life , and i have seen some 😂 This interpretation if ,not the best,is quite close! As well i think that Purple Rain, even if it’s been covered by the best guitars players from Clapton, to Gilmour , passing through Knopfer etc. is actually uncoverable , and belongs only to Prince ! I'm stunned like you are, Salvo. This was my brothers prom song. haha I was a year behind him. And I'm at a loss for words. I know he was a musical genius. I lived through Purple Rain. Anyone who was at that age where pop culture was it, knows what I'm talking about. You could not escape it. It was everywhere - and then the movie, oh my goodness, the movie. I think it was about a 3-4 year period of nothing but Purple Rain. But nothing like this was out there for people to see unless you went to the show. So after almost 40 years, I finally get to see what I missed. If this is Syracuse, NY, I live only a 2 1/2 hour drive away. If it was in Italy, that's a little farther. RIP Prince

I'm glad they've released the higher quality video of this in recent years. I have the original VHS of this performance that was released in the 80s, which I enjoyed, but of course, that's VHS quality. lol. (also my VHS is a bit worn out. lol). So , it's good to see the higher quality version available today.

And just imagine, this song is 40 years old this month. 1984 was post-punk, cold wave, glam rock period, yet one of the biggest hit was this song, which has a strong gospel musical flavour and a spiritual lyrics. And seeing him onstage is really like assisting to a mass. The fervour of the audience is almost religious. It's not my favourite song of his, but like everyone, I can't resist the power and expressivity of this live version. The whole concert is a must see, it's epic. Wendy deserves a big ❤ too, the chemistry they had on stage, he, Wendy and Lisa, is incredible.

Great reaction as always mate! I had the pleasure of seeing Prince in concert in 1986. I was 10 years old and it blew my mind. He drove on stage in a pink Cadillac and shot some basketball. He was as good as the Chappelle Show made him out to be.

When he played this at the superbowl, the heavens opened and he was advised not to do it because stage was drenched and with all the electrics could be dangerous and he would get soaked... But he said no the audience was getting wet so would he... Was a great experience ♥️

My favorite part is after he sings the first line (at around the 8:00 mark, lol) people cheer and he says "Thank you." but what he means is "shut the fuck up". And immediately, the whole crowd does. SalvoG, you owe it to yourself to watch his Super Bowl halftime performance. Obviously it's the best Super Bowl halftime performance, but it is even better than you can imagine it could be. The whole set is shorter than this song!

I've seen it live too 5 years later!!! Stunning! But he also did a very "small"version of Purple Rain shortly before his death. Just him and the piano. Equally stunning.... Gone WAY too soon. You should watch Michael Jackson live on his BAD tour. Also greatness! Also gone too soon... LJ

There are many good guitar players. However, Prince goes to another level where he and the guitar become one being. That's the only way to explain what you witnessed watching this and so many of his performances. Then you realize we will never see another like him.

The studio version is also good, "purple rain" is all around us.

Prince was my guy growing up. I found him via the soundtrack for Tim Burton’s Batman and from then on became absolutely obsessed. I never got to see him live but my aunt and uncle took me around to see all his spots in Minnesota a memory i will never forget. BTW that guitar is the famous Dave Rusan (Minnesota based guitar maker) Cloud Guitar created for the movie Purple Rain and toured by Prince from then on. The “Cloud 3” recently sold at auction for $600K. Dave does sell replica versions based on the design as well.

There is a video of him performing Purple Rain at First Ave for the filming of the movie. The guitar solo was just mind blowing!!! He was such a misucal genius. I learned when I toured Paisley Park he was planning a tour, it was to be in smaller venues. He was going to be him and a piano. That would have been magical.

This is Prince in concert in Germany, playing a huge grand piano dressed in his way as Beethoven. You've seen his guitar skills, now check out his piano skills, classical, rock, R&B etc. He's phenomenal. The performance you just watched was amazing but it wasn't the exception, it was the rule. I'll catch heat for this....but- As a rule, I like to see reactors do the studio versions or the original video first. There are very few songs where a live version beats the studio. With a few notable exceptions of course. Turn the Page by Bob Segar - In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins - Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney... (I'm absolutely missing some) This doesn't take into account the nostalgia if you were there of course, but we fell in love with this music on the radio or MTV. Not at a concert.

You can teach a person to play a musical instrument, you can teach a person how to sing. However, in my opinion, you can not teach a person how to perform. That is something that they are either born with or they are not. I have been to several concerts, with multiple genres, from AC/DC, The Tragically Hip, Willie Nelson, Lenny Kravitz, Tim McGraw, Paul McCartney, Barenaked Ladies or The Rolling Stones. (to name a few) I can't say which was the best or my favorite, because you are comparing different performers and genres. What I will say is, there are those that get on stage and sing, and there are those that perform. Those who take the performance and make it a moment. It can be by how they interact with the audience, telling stories between songs, or it can be like Prince did in this performance, by making that a moment in time. I was way too young to have been at that concert, and it solidifies my feeling that I was born a decade or two too late. I wish I could have been at that concert. That was an EPIC performance. This is why he is a legend! RIP Prince. Thank-you for the music. I'm grateful we have these videos that we can watch and see him perform.

This was Prince’s best version of Purple Rain! But it was not his best guitar solo bro… just wait till you get through more of his catalogue ;-)

There goes my thumbs up even though this is not my favorite version of a song that, in my opinion, is minor in their catalog from a creativity standpoint (I mean musicality). It's (unnecessarily) too long and has a few glitches, not to mention the poor quality of both the sound and the video (an 80's VHS). Don't get me wrong, this album was the one that pushed me to be the fan I've been for the last forty-something years, but it's not in my top 5 of their discography. Try, please, Live at L.A. Forum
