+Jordan Rios That is not a Lumber Jack. That was Big Chick his Bodyguard and was also in the movie Purple Rain. He became a Pastor and died several years back. To this day Prince respects him and he was a good friend to him.
+Jordan Rios The Lumberjack was a professional wrestler. The reason Prince didn't sing in the We Are the World video is because he was bailing the lumberjack out of jail.
***** that is bullshit. Prince even made a song called Hello about why he didn't sing We are the world. Big Chick became a pastor. Quit spreading around lies.
@@allenwilliams8426thriller was 2 in a half years years old by 1985 that's why it didn't win any awards and michael jackson will always be the goat period ✌️
ToonieMama Actually Lionel Richie cleaned the house. Lionel Richie won more awards that year than Prince. Lionel Richie won Favourite Pop/Rock Video, Favourite Pop/Rock Artist, Favourite Pop/ Rock Male Video Artist, Favourite Soul/R&B Male Artist, Favourite Soul/R&B Video, Favourite Soul/R&B Video Artist. Prince only won Favourite Pop/Rock Album, Favourite Soul/R&B Album, Favourite Soul/R&B Song. Lionel Richie won 6, Prince won 3. Lionel Richie cleaned the house not Prince. Prince fans think they are superior to everyone.
Except the "daring and...chances" from interacting with people. He wasn't "shy" in the least. Prince sent out orders to all presenters not to touch, speak to or interact with him whatsoever. Jack Blades & Kelly Keagy (from Night Ranger) got those orders as well. They did everything they could to violate them, sitting behind him during the show, patting him on the back & talking to him. Prince is a douche. He thinks quite highly of himself for a pop artist. His skill, soul & artistry would be more evident if he DID take more risks. But as a person, he sounds like a pompous ass & coward...including the drug addiction. His home was mere miles from one of best rehab communities in the world. He denied Weird Al the "privelege" of parodying him (Kurt Cobain was more than flattered at Weird Al's request). I do respect Prince's stance on the internet. I embrace unusual & unique artists & art. Using your crown for philanthropy like Princess Di gains my respect. Not sure why Prince thought anyone wanted to touch or talk to him. I get the impression that there isn't really much substance there, from what he says, in his words, to his music. His actions definitely speak to my point, though. It's all we have to go on, unfortunately.
Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, Kenny Loggins, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, James Ingram, Cindy Lauper, these are great artists that really sing and wrote songs that hits
Prince in that purple fur coat... is just beautiful!! Purple means royalty, and boy did Prince walk up on stage like the royal prince he is! In your honor a royal hand clap👏👏👏👏👏 RIP Prince!
Prince definitely deserved all of his wins, because "Purple Rain" was and still is a Legendary Album. Timeless. Looking at the artists that was there that year, puts today's artists to shame! Seriously.
John Chisholm Yes, when MJ died, it was like half of the 80's was gone. When Prince is gonna eventually die, it will be like it's all over(the other half will die) and all we would have is these so-called "artists" of today. Some of them are good, but very few. And even the good artists of today don't put great music like it was used to, because music is not made like in the past. Nowadays, everyone makes commercial music, not real music. Even the great artists that remained from the previous decades changed their style and they release commercial stuff. Look at Madonna's music now and compare it with her prime and you will be shocked how different they sound. Almost nobody does music for the art anymore, most do it for money. It's the reason why there aren't many great hits like it used too, music nowadays is not made to be everlasting, it's made to make quick money and then to go to the next single.
Dexter Dawson What you said about Madonna, can definitely also be said about Prince. Listen to Prince's latest music and compare it to his work during the 80's. It's a dramatic difference. Not to mention, Madonna continues to sell millions of albums with every release. Prince hasn't been as fortunate. Prince is currently putting out the most mediocre music of his career.
Loakum I know and that's the thing. Even the great artists we still have are attempting to comercialize their work. Instead of doing it like they used, they don't create art anymore, they are only focusing on the rational and commercial side of music, not on the emotional and/or artistic side. And it undermines their work. Madonna's sales are on a strict decline as well. Hard Candy sold 4 million and her last album from 2012 sold only 2 million. Not that it's not good, financially speaking, but it doesn't compare to Ray of Light(20 million) or to Like A Virgin and True Blue, both reaching 25 million, being the best-selling studio albums of Madonna. The industry has changed and all the artists are going with it. That's why even if they are some great artists out there, it won't be the same. Everything is computerized and almost no one composes songs like they used to. Technology made it possible for music to break through everywhere around the globe and to compose music easier than ever before. Unfortunately, it seems it sacrificed what made music be great and what makes art be everlasting. Labels are going to disappear in about 20 years from now and songs are not as memorable as before. A good tune will be remembered even 5 decades later, but this commercial music of this day and age will not be remembered in a few years after its release. It's release single, make money, it stops making money, go and release another one, rinse and repeat. They turned the music industry into 100% business and 0% music as opposed to 50% business and 50% music.
Your right but at the same time I think that talent & inspiration is not there for either the younger or older artists now. It feels like the World has plunged into a new Dark Ages. Not to seem too over the top but it feels like Mankind has lost it's spark of energy. Not sure if you understand what I mean?
+setdrec If he couldn't handle someone else winning, he wouldn't have been there, but he did win the big one that year for best album the Grammy for Can't Slow Down and he deserved it
PRINCE PLAYED OVER 27 INSTRUMENTS ...all of them on his albums , and they say better than anyone...PRINCE was considered to be the best or one of the best guitarist in the world , PRINCE produced and compose his own records with no help from anyone....PRINCE MADE 39 RECORDS...HE also wrote all his songs alone some came to him in dreams ....PRINCES VOICE had huge vocal range from low to high and everything in between ... and the man could dance !!!! TRUELY A ICON AND A MUSICAL GENIUS AND MENTOR TO OTHER MUSICIANS.....YOU ARE HUGELY MISSED AND LOVED !!
robyn Prince DIDN'T play 27 instruments. I mean come on... that was just for advertising his album, but in fact counting every single different keyboard in the studio he touched doesn't mean playing "different instruments". That's still a keyboard and counts as 1 instrument. Etc. Btw. Stevie Wonder plays I guess more than Prince. Add that he's blind. And he's a pro on several instruments (keyboard and harmonica are his def pros). Prince's instrument was guitar. None of the quantities you listed are the reasons why he was great. I mean vocal range? Who thinks it's the vocal range that makes a good singer? The one who knows NOTHING about singing.
@@joshuagalban6472 You mean Ebin George? Everybody knows Prince didn't play more that 8 instruments, Ebin plays 27. Trent Reznor, Anton Newcombe, even Stevie Wonder play more instruments than Prince. Prince is NOT in the Guiness book...
Prince, your passing saddens me deeply😟....but GOD gave you to us to entertain us and now your work is finished. May your precious soul be truly at peace now. Love you always, Sweet Angel💘📿
Just for some people to understand. Thriller came out in 1982. It was incredible that it even got a nomination three years after its release. Purple Rain came out in 1984, so this was deservedly Prince's year to shine. As a long life MJ fan, Prince deserved it. Hope he and Michael are writing songs for the angels in heaven...
Prince Writing, Composing, arranging, and Playing The instruments..... Let Mike Do The Choreography or Something For The Music Video 😂.. I Want Prince Singing it, Too
I love how they kept talking about "black album" this and "black songs" and he walked up there wit his WHITE bodyguard lmao he knew what he was doing! Love him rip
I believe Prince always knew he was going to change music. He always knew what he wanted and he work hard to achieve it. His talent had to be notice. A talent like his doesen't come often. He was unique that's why he is the best. I wonder what Vanity and Prince felt when she presented the award. Love U always Prince.
Chick had been his bodyguard for several years. And remember, he ABSOLUTELY insisted on having a interracial band from the beginning!!! One of his MANY groundbreaking accomplishments. And showing how Sly Stone was one of his idols.
Better than Mozart, in the years to come people will be looking for the “Modern Day Prince” which I Highly Doubt ANYONE will Ever come close to for at least Another 1,000,000 Years.
Goddamn it Prince & the Revolution were just so cool. They didn't look like no one else, they didn't sound like no one else and maybe that's because they weren't like anyone else. They were a force to be reckoned with and if I was ever in a band, I'd like to be in one like this. Absolutely amazing! I miss Prince but I thank him for introducing us to some awesome musicians along the way. And thank you for sharing, purplesnowlove.
YES INDEED!!!! Well said!! He is GREATLY missed. 💜💜 Will never ever be another like him. Still doesn't seem real. 😏 Thanks for all the GREAT music & performances you gave us. RIP Prince 💜💖💜🎤🎼🎸
If you noticed everyone in the 80s had their own style. No one was trying to be like anyone else. That's what I love about that decade man. Everyone was doing their own thing.
Our sweet Prince. He deserved it all and more. What a talent. Nobody can compare 2U Prince. We love and miss you. And, thank you for all the joy you brought us.
He had style, he won against thriller. superlative He deserve this and more. He kick ass in 2021 and i hope the flame never stop through his legacy. Keep the spirit alive for the new generation 💜💜💜💜💜
Amazing decade, to have songs like ‘carribean queen, what’s love got to do with it’ and ‘when doves cry’ in one category is better than the winners and contenders of the last 25 years combined alone!
+Ronnie Mead True, He wasn't God, but he is a star. Our shining star and he shined brightly. And I thank him for gracing this earth with his presence. I hope his soul is playing his guitar in purple paradise.
A few moments that I love from this video... seeing Prince walk onstage behind the Revolution made such a huge statement for him, which continued throughout his career (i.e. "I didn't do this by myself; I'm here to showcase the incredible talent that surrounds me; it's a blessing to be part of something larger than myself..."). And seeing Prince with his "bodyguard," his petite, womanlike frame, but he was the most dominant and masculine man in the entire world, then and always... that resonates with me. And lastly, how Wendy grabbed his hand and spoke on his and The Revolution's behalf... I thought that was incredibly touching, and showed the unbreakable bond they all shared as a band, and as good friends.
brenda jackson I wrote that somewhere else. It's unreal the level of talent back then. You had to have musical talent above all else. Shame it's not the same anymore
@@Olly_2024_ imo he was one of the biggest in the 80s if u count Madonna, Prince , Lionel Richie, and Tina Turner. I do feel he had a bit more fame because of popularity.
@@jermainelajaunejackson735 oh boy don’t get me start listing. Don’t get me wrong most of the bests at this genre are black but damn you’re sleeping on some white dudes.
I feel bad for Prince. Vanity, his former girlfriend, the one he thought was truly his soulmate, had to present the award and announce him as the winner. Must’ve made him miss her even more.
The fact that Thriller was nominated again just a year after Michael took home 8 awards, including a Merit Award at the age of 25 is a testament is a testament to Michael's impact in the 80s.
+Carolina Martucci Michael Jackson ruled the 80's he was way bigger than prince everything was Michael this Michael that, he was huge, I personally like him his songs better, I like prince but only like 5 songs where as Michael the list goes on all the way down the Jackson 5.
+mike johnson You need to know that Prince's catalog surpasses Michael's by eons. You gotta know his music for real to give any kind of comparison. ..... Peace
And btw that Thriller was still being nominated three years after it's release says enough. Michael took home 9 awards at the 1984 American music awards.
In a time when we went back to school the next day and everybody talked about what happened on the award show. Long before the internet age. What memories.
The performers in the 80's were some of the best musicians in Popular music History. And Prince & his band proved themselves to be the best of the best during this period. Will we ever see the likes of this talent again I wonder?
Tame Impala.. Unknown Mortal Orchestra.. Grimes.. those are the three truly historical artists that we have nowadays.. in my humble opinion. Perhaps even more creative, authentic, tasteful, than a lot of the great 80's artists. On par with MJ.. with Prince.. etc.
I think only time will prove that. I am afraid we were spoilt for choice in the 80's & 90's. There was so much quality to choose from it is hard to imagine. I am afraid that certainly isn't the case nowadays. It was a fantastic time to have lived through which I wouldn't change for anything they have today.
I hope the very same they were something special togetherPrince &Vanity ,Would of been good if they had some kids together.hope and pray they will make it to the 1st heaven🙏🌴
Seriously.. I didn't even realize the awards used to be that damn divided at that time. Shit, hearing them say "Black Single" made my white ass uncomfortable lol
This was the Prince I loved the most. The big white body guard , the soft voice , the eyes that wonder unconsciously through the crowd. Man Love this guy. Money don't matter tonight, Because our Prince has passed on to the next life. Were on were own.
Prince wants it done right. That's brings out the best. good intentions. my best coaches did the same. takes you to higher levels no one is familiar with. believe me I KNOW.
it's because people were really burnt out with thriller by 85 dude lol if thriller came out in 84 who knows what have happened at these awards would prince have still taken home all those awards probably not
+Craig Hicks i had to rewind it to hear the woman say that again because i couldn't believe my ears.... fucking hell. "Black single"? how fucking horribly offensive.
Think About it PRINCE IS THE GREATEST MUSICIAN OF ALL TIME! Mozart and Beethoven didn’t play Nearly as many instruments as him, on top of having Extraordinary Vocals, could dance in High Heels, or Write and Produce as many songs as he did, I mean he has an Entire Vault of Unheard music that could More than likely make ANY artist today or in the futures songs look like Complete And Utter Sh*t. And we haven’t even heard them........ He is the Greatest.
Honestly it's hard to compare pop music to Classical: they didn't need to showcase productional skill or amazing vocal chops So it's not easy to compare, let's just agree that all 3 of those guys are great
@@habitatgcx I agree. But the Revolution was with him for some of his biggest hits. But the Gold Experience & Diamonds & Pearls albums, plus that Exodus album NPG put out with Prince backing them, sounded better to my ears than the Revolution, but the Revolution was better than the newer bands he put together in my opinion.
💜Beautiful Prince inside & out always thanking God & his band. Beautiful Person we have lost the greatest entertainer & genius of our time & all times to come. Nothing or anyone can be compared to Prince luv U my sweet Prince 4 ever, Rock heaven like you rocked earth💜💜
What a Class Act Both times up to the stage with his band he took a backseat and allowed his band to walk ahead of him. Not only that but how cool is his bodyguard the old gray haired dude doesn't get any better than that. Trulia humble human being gone too soon. Rest in peace Prince
The big bodyguard following the purple one was so hillarious. What fascinated me about Prince was never has such a small man become so successful in the world. Through sheer drive and talent he achieved a lot.
You can tell the only award he really cared about was the Pop award. The award didn't label his music with the color of his skin. Congrats to Prince still being one of the sexiest talented men alive and overcoming the obvious ignorance of that time and the haters.
I remember this, Prince blew everybody away when everyone was expecting MJ to win.. We were screaming we loved him then and we did till the day he died. One in a zillion.
Absolutely! And at 6:17 mark the announcer throws a huge dig at PRINCE when he says " we are going to have to cut it short tonight" then he looks over at someone makes a face the smiles! Very disrespectful! Does anyone know who that is?
fax why i loved him he was different had his own style he was quite but did not care to show jis feelings to the world he let his music prove and the awards even in the movie purple rain if micheal had a movie for thriller shid would of sold 50 million because of the movie he sold more
+Stacey Sing, "Thriller" by Michael Jackson went on to sell 65 million albums after the smoke cleared. Purple Rain sold more than 22 million. *"According to Billboard magazine, the album spent 24 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard albums chart (August 4, 1984 to January 18, 1985), becoming one of the top soundtracks ever...The album sold 69,000 equivalent copies (62,000 in pure album sales) in the week following Prince's death, thus allowing the album to re-enter the Billboard 200 at number 2... "* '80s, nuff said.
This video is indicative of how powerful Prince was in the 1984-1985 period. When he was making the Purple Rain album or when he was in the production period of making that album, he didn't give a s*** about how big the album would be. He just worked on that album like a worker bee that was oblivious to what the world would think about the album. In these last few weeks, that's been one of my biggest takeaways from the Purple Rain album production period and its subsequent phenomenon status in the 1984-1985 period.
Somewhere in the afterlife Michael Jackson, Prince, and George Michael are together making new music. We will never hear it in our lifetime but i can imagine how beautiful anything those 3 would make together would be beautiful beyond words. Rest easy boys. You are sorely missed.
Did anyone else notice how often the presenters screwed up whenever Prince was brought up in a category? They sounded like they would forget to say his name and made it obvious when they corrected themselves.
I remember coming across a video where Justin Timberlake made a surprise appearance for Britney Spears at a show during the early 2000s. One of the top comments said "The Golden Age of Pop". XD Back to this particular day in 1985, immediately after the AMA, several artists (not even including Prince & Madonna) went straight to A&M Studios to record "We Are the World", both the song & video.
