In this video from our archive we look back at what everyday life in prison was like for teens who were locked up in a maximum-security juvenile prison. From prison guards handcuffing a teen and taking him to the segregation unit for an attempted escape, to teens in the prison's general population cellblock discussing how they ended up behind bars, this video gives an unprecedented look at what it's like to be spending life in juvenile prison and what it takes to finally gain your freedom.
Update: There is no indication either boy returned to the system following their release.

It’s crazy watching these I’m on 40 and I was in juvenile lock up and group homes when a teen and yes I had issues but now I look back and realize how much I’ve changed I got a good job a good life and so yes places like that can help

These two young men in the beggining seem so well mannered and respectful, I think they definitely have potential they just need mentorship to give them a hand up. Some of these young men are just trapped in the wrong place with nobody to guide them, and no oppurtunity to get out. No matter how much mom loves them, sometimes they need an outside guide to lead them out

@crystaltrocar5237 - very well stated. And thankfully, there is no indication they ever returned to the system after their release. That's always great to hear! Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@twixxcoke5940 Yes, that's certainly true--most want to and there's often little to no way out. But, the premise remains the same--a change of address can make all the difference. We think that's what @rubenpereez6563 was trying to point out.

It’s a experience to look at these videos because I was once at places like that group homes juvenile detention and I lived threw that as a 40 year old now I look back and realize how much I’ve changed and I think places like that now would be better if people who have been threw that could help the teens cuz they could relate to it because the guards and workers didn’t understand what it’s like and yes some teens can’t be helped but some do change I think the workers should be more understanding and try to find out what can help them instead of reminding them how bad and horrible they are

Totally, they need people like you and people like Calamari Productions who see them as individuals with hope and potential who can be helped. My heart goes out to every single one of these lads, I can see how they end up where they are but they all seem good hearted and just lacking in the right people listening and giving them what they need to be set up for success. You should be incredibly proud of being able to turn things around, maybe you could think about being a mentor 😉

I think they should have like a big brother program for teens when they get out cuz for me I had to change my friends my location I think if they had someone to help them with re entering society it would help them stay out of trouble

@JasonPeck-pf6rn - You're right. Mentors can make all the difference! Glad to hear you were able to change your environment to get away from bad influences. A lot of kids tell us they really want to do that, but many can't find the way out. Happy to hear you did! Thanks again for watching and commenting.

Who would want to be a CO in a juvenile facility 😮 The CO says it takes a certain kind of person. It sure DOES 😅
@ShareHolder-gp9il
@ShareHolder-gp9il 4 месяца назад
You would have to either want to try and impact a person who has otherwise been flushed down society's toilet or you really need the check.
@CalamariProductions
@CalamariProductions 4 месяца назад
@Chiara-ez5hw - most CO's tell us they choose to work with juveniles in order to help make a difference in one way or another. The challenge is not letting job burnout get the best of them. None of it is easy...for the COs or the kids. It's a tough environment, but the COs who truly love the job and stay committed can make all the difference in a kid's life. Thanks for watching and posting your comment!

I like how the correction officer said “they’re pretty strong strings from the mattress that can cut u or strangle u” right after he snapped that very same string with his bare hands😂. Don’t believe me?! Go to the 2:49 time stamp in the video and just watch closely😂. These CO’S do to much to make the kids look bad man if they put as much effort into rehabilitation instead of punishment,stigmatizing, and housing they might actually get somewhere in the country.

@chiara-ez5hw - one of the hardest things to see is kids doing well once they're away from the bad influences and life on the street, only to return to the same environment that got them in trouble in the first place once they're released. It can be a vicious cycle.

Sad hearing these kids say there is no possible way to get out of the gang life. Meanwhile you have ex gang members in California that have been gang banging for decades inside and outside of prison. And they are no longer affiliated at the age of 50. Living normal life's. Working a 9-5, taking care of their families. These teenagers have no concept of real life. It's so sad. They are in the prime spot in life to turn a new cheek and live a normal life. They just push it away and live in denial. That's their choice. Nobody is forcing them. They could move 4 hours away to a new state and city and nobody would know they ever gang banged. They just don't have the mental capacity to even think that far ahead. So sad
@CalamariProductions
@CalamariProductions 3 месяца назад
@jackwilson8515 - very true that there are many, many ex-gang members who are now living good lives and doing what they can to help other young kids understand that gang life will get you nowhere. Sadly, many kids just don't see any hope or opportunity and turn to gangs for money and "family." It can be a vicious cycle, but one that we know can be broken. Thank you for watching and commenting.
