One of 26 Private SNAFU (Situation Normal, All F*cked Up) cartoons made by the U.S. Army Signal Corps to educate and boost the morale of the troops. The SNAFU character was created by Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and Phil Eastman, and most were animated by Warner Brothers Animation Studios. They were voiced by actors including Mel Blanc and scored by Carl Stalling. This film includes "A Few Quick Facts", an animation that appeared (like the Snafu series) as part of the "Army / Navy Screen Magazine" during the war, followed by the SNAFU episode, "Diarrhea and Dysentery".
This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFi...

@ 0:43 -- so did Ferdinand and Isabella and pretty much any educated person on the globe, given Columbus' views on the size of the Earth...
@tofusurvivor1
@tofusurvivor1 7 лет назад
MacrossSD what do you mean? other than Columbus underestimating the circumference of the earth and a few other errors (based on his not having previous info on such matters plus the Italian mile usage compared to the Arabic mile for an Alfraganus degree as well as using a world model from Marinus of Tyre) he was quite brilliant as an Explorer. He never believed in the slightest that the world was flat, and such a view didn't come about till 400 years after his death. He essentially discovered and perfected the usage of the trade winds and passage to the new world, something not surpassed until Portuguese Exploration to the southern hemisphere across the Atlantic. By accident he proved the old Greek earth measurements and proved the oceans off of japan were not the same as those off Iberia. I'm not sure why you hold such a negative view of Columbus given his accomplishment.
@ursulajoni15

Oh my poor sweet naive baby Christopher Columbus was a monster even by colonising European standards, alsono he didn't believe the world was flat but neither did any educated person at the time, that was a misconception made up to make him seem better and justify the day

@ 0:56 -- not that tough a feat given that the GI is using a (for then) state-of-the-art rifle, while Daniel Boone was stuck almost certainly with a smoothbore musket (while rifling was invented in the 16th century, it was very little used until the 19th and the advent of mass production, precision machining, and smokeless powder)

+MacrossSD Point being that Boone was a legendary crack shot.
@tofusurvivor1
@tofusurvivor1 7 лет назад
MacrossSD the point of those areas is talking about the advancement of tech, society, and training, with most of it being on the technological level (ie. more firepower than a platoon of napoleon's finest for the most visible example). Don't think too deeply in a morale boosting WW2 Era military video.
@bluemech8178
@bluemech8178 7 лет назад
that is the goal. To show soldiers of that time that they have equipment so "evolved" and a training so "good" that they alone are better than most figures of the past. Nothing but propaganda and morale booster.
@gullreefclub
@gullreefclub 5 лет назад
MacrossSD Daniel Boone was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1734 which and his favorite Rifle (not Musket) was named “Tick-Licker” and before someone say no it was “Old Betsy” that was Davey Crockett’s Rifle. Boone named his rifle “Tick-Licker” because he said he shoot a tick off of animal without injury to the beast. As the story goes Boone was given his favorite rifle when he was 12 years old and he proved to be a excellent shot and skilled hunter.

I mean fair most of those comparisons are simplistic, most notably the Napoleon one. As while yes GI's may have had more firepower than a platoon, depending on how you define firepower so did the bowmen at agincourt, as they shot faster and with greater accuracy.

If you're sending all these bullets over into Asia wouldn't it make a lot more sense to have the bullets made in California rather than in New England? It seems like you're wasting a lot of resources for no reason, which is not a good thing when you're fighting a war that's happening literally everywhere.

@PeriscopeFilm
@PeriscopeFilm Год назад
Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous RU-vid users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

0:30 According to my 1SG, everybody who ever held their rifle like this inevitably shot somebody else. Makes you wonder how the Soldiers of yesteryear ever survived Basic much less standing in formation with their rifles. Also makes you wonder how lowest common denominator discipline could be lower for volunteer 'professional' Soldiers than for draftees given much less training for WWII. I guess the TC 3-21.5 needs to be thrown out until all the madness stops.
@Jason-qc4ty

@flyboymb
@flyboymb 3 года назад
@@Jason-qc4ty Some genius apparently never took an online course in sarcasm. The POINT is that we've had individuals handling weapons safely for centuries without spontaneously killing themselves. And these were draftees, not the 'professionals' that are supposed to be more disciplined and trained. If you're truly comfortable and mindful of the status of your weapon, that is the ultimate form of weapons safety. Making people skittish that their weapon could go off and kill somebody at any time accomplishes the opposite of this. The military as a whole has generally placed the standard to encompass the lowest common denominator instead of bringing the lowest common denominator up to the standard. Anybody who has spent two weeks in any service realizes this. Anyway, I get the feeling I've used too many words and the reasoning has been lost on you anyway given that you really want to try to start shit on a three year old statement without making sure you understand what is being said first. So want a box of crayons instead?

I didn’t understand your comment until I looked up the latest edition of the D + C manual. My experience was with the M16AA1 and A2, and the soldier at 00:30 is at the normal Parade Rest position I remember. Had no idea they’ve modified it for that little carbine the Army uses now. Makes sense considering how tall all those kids are now.

The ww 2 soldiers did NOT shoot better than Daniel Boone and they did NOT know more about maps than Christopher Columbus. A compass yes but, not maps.
@BeKindToBirds
@BeKindToBirds 2 года назад
How didn't they? Better optics and manufacturing easily outclasses any firearm made in boone's time. Air reconnaissance and precise surveys easily outclass any hand drawn map of the age of sail and the proliferation of the education of such was substantially superior. It honestly seems completely honest and not at all understated. Besides, you changed the specific words used.
