I played both sports, American football is far more dangerous. Although I will say I was more tired playing rugby because there isn't really any break time the ball is constantly moving back and forth like playing tug of war. You cant lay ppl out in rugby, you have to wrap them up and bring them down, as where in football you can or use to be able to truck ppl. In rugby you can truck ppl but only as a ball carrier because the defense has to arm tackle and wrap you up to bring you down but you can't do it in a manner that's obviously looks like your trying to hurt someone, its more of trying to protect your possession of the ball and you can't put your head down and plow through ppl, In football a defender can put his shoulder into you and just lay you out. You play football scared because you know dudes are out to really fuck you up, if you are slipping or they catch you slipping, I was never afraid playing rugby. Given I only played a few games of rugby in a league In germany before I fucked my knee up. At the end of the day they are both tough ass sports to play and aren't really that dissimilar if you've played them, you can get fucked up playing both sports easily. I will say that after the game rugby is more fun because the guys all get together at the pub and drink beer and chill out, and the group is a little more diverse because guys come from various countries and are all on one team, so that's pretty cool. Football is more explosive and rugby is more endurance. That's just my opinion, but like I said I only played a few games of league rugby before I jacked my knees up. You dont really have the egos in rugby as you do in football rugby is more of a team sport and the ball won't move a inch unless dudes are in sync and understand their role on the team. In football you tend to have way more diva personalities. The linemen only chill with linemen, the reciever core only chills with other receiver's that type of silly shit. In rugby none of that nonsense goes down. You'd likely just be kicked off the team for fucking up the unit cohesiveness. Dudes just wouldn't want you on the team no matter how good you are.

its not just nfl when i was in high school back in the late 90s when i was playing football my freshmen and sophmore years, i saw 1 kid get paralyssed (bad form he speared someone) and i seen 4 ppl have to get taken off field in ambulance, this is just ohio high school football in late 90s, we were running 4.4 40s and some of us were 200 lbs, i was a 160 lb 16yr old running back, and it was nuts....... im sure its not like that anymore with all the changes making the game more soft but yea
@@aaronclay4665 in grade school we played tackle football on asphalt @ recess. I busted the back of my head wide open on a curb. Im 46 now. That happened in like the 5th or 6th grade. I didn't even realize it had happened. A couple of the other kids just said I was bleeding. I put my hand on the back of my head. Pulled it back my whole hand was bloody. It was about a 3" gash. I was terrified my mom was going to light in to me, when she came and picked me up. I refused to go to the hospital. On the bright side. ALL the girls started getting goggly-eyed around me.
Football has literally all of those, u just play through cuts, scrapes and bruises. Sometimes play through sprains, might be the most common type of injury in football.
@@SHAKE-S-PIERRE I once went up for a pass and got my legs cut out from under. I flipped and landed on my head. Got a concussion and a sprained neck. I never made it through an entire season. Watching these pros I admire most their toughness. Their bodies seem indestructible.

Shit I remember Day 1 of College Football, I was told our Mike brought the wood. So I was like bet, pulled and brought everything I had to this man. Mind you I ought weighed him by 100 lbs. We stalemated, and broke each others chinstraps. That's when I knew College ball was going to be fun haha
As a 6'4 320 Defensive Tackle (in school) I thoroughly enjoyed folding quartbacks. Fighting Offensive Linemen was fun. Even though they have claimed a few of my teeth, broken forearm, broken wrist, broken fingers, bruised ribs, and a couple concussions. My absolute favorite thing was kickoff coverage. Roaring down the field with reckless abandon, smashing full tilt into anything not wearing my colors is what I lived for.
LMAO, I was probably one of those offensive lineman. 6'4" 295, and would never trade it for a second. Unless you grew up playing, people like this reviewer cannot really understand. Yeah, I had injuries that I still live with to this day (not sure other than thumbs that I have a single finger that was not broken playing football), no lost teeth, plenty of concussions (most undiagnosed, lol), broken leg when 600+ pounds of nose guard and center fell on it while I was engaged with a blitzing linebacker (that was fun and concluded my career). To this day I still have to get chiropractic adjustments on my neck due to playing football 40 years ago. If I could go back and do it again, I would in a heartbeat.
As I understand it, Rugby is a gentleman's game. Lock up and push each other towards or away from your goal. American football is a metaphor for war. Two front lines, special teams trying to get the ball into the enemies camp. And they wear pads/armor so they can hit each other that much harder. I played football in high school for four years. The ultimate, and unspoken, goal in football is to eliminate your opponents from the game within the rules of the game. Hit them as hard as you can as often as you can! Not so friendly when you look under the surface/sportsmanship. Especially as you get to the more competitive ranks, college and pro.
Hahaha for real though. Remember a coach I had back in high school would buy you a steak dinner for every fumble you caused or recovered. Blitzes were brutal even when it was just practice.
This was interesting. I played 4 sports through highschool, including quarterback in the north Dallas area with a heavy focus on football. Played D1 college for a while until I finally chose to stop, but this was a really well orchestrated line of thinking that I have always known, but haven't really thought about because I was too close. I've always seen it as analogous to chess, but that's because I got bored of the concept after a while, but I can tell you from experience that there really are no rules on the football field other than DO NOT WALK. Everything else goes, especially when the refs know that the rivalry is tightly wound. It's the greatest game that has ever been designed, and its lessons have brought me a lot of peace in this crazy world.
Played Varsity all 4 years in HS and Played 5 years in college (had a medical redshirt 1 year), and come game day; I would literally tell my defense that they better not comeback unless they bring me an ACL from the other team. They guys I played with weren't happy after a game even after a Win if we didn't have a cut, bloodied jersey, or new scars on our helmets. But, that's what I love about the sport, and loved playing it's the only way to beat the dog piss out of someone legally, besides combat sports.
Yeah we were taught a method of tackling called the alligator death roll where if you were on a guys leg you would squeeze as hard as you can and start rolling so either they would go down or tear their acl.
The reason these hits are so crazy half the time is because from youth we are trained to not back down from a hit. The coaches develop your mind when you're a child to tuck your helmet, get low, and explode with your legs. These people have been giving and receiving hits like this from the age of 9 or 10, and they were the best at what they did. That's how that got to the professional level.
We were taught years ago, to lead with your head, while straight up, never dip your head, can break your neck, drive through his chest, now you have to use your shoulder. Bad part is playing tackle football and being so used to leading with your head, almost broke my nose, had 2 black eyes, but my buddy was pretty much outcold. Favorite drill was the bull ring to teach you to keep your head on a swivel. These hits make everyone who played want to go out and put on those pads.

You can lookup Tj Griffen, Trinity HS Euless Tx. He played safety. Tackled a guy so hard he broke his neck. College scholarships all gone for sports. Sad part was he was great at soccer and track as well.

Clearly, the NFL has the harder hits bc they run full speed into each other. The clips where someone slows down before impact, that player always gets destroyed. The pads and helmets may help prevent some broken bones, but the impact is still the impact. Great reaction, though!
@@bradydegraw86 they do actually. If you go and hit someone without wearing pads, the natural reflex is to not hit them full power due to the damage you would be doing to yourself in the process. However, if you put pads on for protection, it is much easier to bypass said reflex and put more power into your hits as well as the ability to use more of your body to bring someone down

Love the reaction. As for sports, I'm an old head now but I was a pitcher in baseball, quarterback in football, and attack in lacrosse. Got scholarships for baseball and played for the Houston Astros in the minors, but I had an injury before I could make it to the big league and it was before they made insane improvements in Tommy John surgery.
When I played, coach always drilled into us to run THROUGH the tackle and separate the man from the ball... best feeling ever when done properly, but as I found out doing the hitting, most of the time, was literally a trainwreck.

I used to Wrestle back in high school and in the Navy. I also did alot of kickboxing, and basketball. I'm older now. Technically disabled. I still play basketball, I box a little , and bowling.

I love watching people's reactions to football. They always ask or say "he's got to be out" but in fact 90% of these guys are up 20 seconds later ready for the next snap. Some of these are comparable to a vehicle collision.
If you wanna be Technical Football players hit harder Bcs they’re wearing pads and the still can put people in comas and knock them out and injure them it’s harder to do that when you have pads on

Only played one year of a team sport, 'T-shirt League Baseball', 47 or 48 years ago. All my preferred sports are 'individual' - downhill skiing, racquetball, roller-skating, like that. But I was super-agressive anytime I was out there! I had people who, after one game of racquetball against me (or watching me play for 10 or 15 minutes) refused to step on a court with me, not even as my partner for a 2-on-2 game! They said I was a crazy-man on the court, always running around at full-speed, swinging at the ball (hard!) when it wasn't even a foot away from somebody. Literally throwing myself against a wall hard enough to *bounce off* it, 'cause it put me in position for a good swing at the ball! One person actually ended up cowering on the floor in the middle of a game, refusing to keep playing against me 'cause I had swung and hit the ball when - *he said* - it was only an inch or two from his head! I told him it was a good 4 or 5 inches from his head, and that I *knew* I wasn't going to hit him! I was almost as aggressive at roller-skating, believe it or not! What I did was, technically, solo figure-skating - sorta what you see in the Winter Olympics, but I did it a little differently. My style was all about going at high-speed so I could do stuff that converted the energy of that speed into big jumps and high-speed spins and long sequences of 'reversals' and such. When I went to a rink that didn't know me, I'd often 'catch a whistle' - kind of like getting a 'foul' called on you - because they thought I was doing things that were dangerous to others. When you're wearing 4 to 5-lbs. of leather, plastic and metal on each foot - skates are lighter now than 40 years ago - if you screw-up and collide with somebody at 20 mph ... somebody (maybe both of you!) could end up going on an ambulance ride to the hospital -- and I *have* seen some *bad* collisions, where an ambulance was needed! But if I screwed up, I always did *whatever* I had to do to *make sure* that anybody else was safer from my mistake than I was! On a couple of occasions, that meant I bled so that nobody else did! So I can both empathize with the pain of a lot of these hits -- but I can also empathize with wanting to 'go all-out' when playing, 'cause that's what I did! Good reaction! Keep it up!
No more leading with the helmet when tackling in football. Changed that rule about 5 years ago? Maybe longer. Helmets also have safety latches on them so upon harsh contact they pop off.
Ronnie lott, awesome defensive player removed his pinkie to not miss the next game. A center played in the play offs with a broken leg he received the previous week. All game. Emmitt Smith, running back relieved a separated shoulder and next week ran for over a hundred yards. have to be special to endure that game and survive.
Hockey will have maybe 1-5 of true massive collisions per game: total. Not per player, but total. It's by the boards, the impact is disapated by the boards. Football depending on position is 7-30 per game. That's per person. Low end for WRs and Qbs. There's a reason they play 82 vs 17 games
In high-school we had something called the board drill. We'd set down a long wooden board then place people on both sides to charge full speed at each other. Was a center so I loved the drill since we don't rely agility. Snapping the ball then either holding anyone back for protection or opening a gap between players on the line for the play.
You mention about college players getting paid. That they're giving up there bodies for nothing, since most of them won't make it to the NFL. They are getting something out of it though. A lot of them are on full ride scholarships and getting a college education paid for.

As I always say when I see these videos is that an important part is missing. You need to watch a video with the sound of those wrecks. I liken it to watching an orchestra playing without the sound. A person sitting in the highest seat in the arena will hear it and the whole crowd gasps like they were punched in the gut. You never forget the sounds of a big hit. Loved watching you react.

This is why for the better part of 6 or 7 years the Seattle Seahawks put out videos on how they train tackling as a team. The professional team literally put out videos of how they practice tackling. The thing they preached the most? Wrap up and twist. effectively take both players to the ground with minimal jarring contact. It's been a few summers since the last of those videos were on the team website, but I still remember them trying to change the sport.

I was so glad to hear you acknowledge that some of these are college players, and your take on them getting paid. I played college football, 4 year starter. I'm in my 50's now, with cognitive issues, back issues, and legs that don't function right. In total, I played football for 14 years. I don't know what my quality of life is going to be like going into my later years, and most of it is due to football. I did it willingly, I loved it, but with the money at the top level of college football, those players need to be compensated. A lot of them are going to end up like me! Thank you for your insight!

I played football for 12 years and miss the hell out of it. I agree that it probably shortens life spans but at the same time I don't know anyone young or old that would take back that trade.
Due to concussion protocol, etc., there have been rule changes about blind side hits, leading with the helmet, blows to the head, "horse collar" tackles, etc. Football players have gotten so big and strong and fast, you will never eliminate injuries from football.
Starting pitching was my game in baseball but I dabbled in football (strong safety) and rugby (scrum half). I was physically large for all those positions but I only played football for a year and it was the most physical, rugby was awesome because I loved the unrestricted combat without pads but baseball was both my first love and the sport that I was best at.
You really did put a valid point out there that the college students should get paid or reimbursed for their time out there on the grid iron. In high school I played iron man football but my crazy ass was trying to get a concussion every game I just didn’t get one or I have a permanent one lol. If one visits the NFL Football Hall of Fame in Canton, it's almost a given that you'll see a former player wandering the hall with his family... it's also pretty common to see these men barely able to walk. The sport was, and is, absolutely brutal.
Ice Hockey has the hardest hits but you get hit less, you take the most punishment in Football as you get hit nearly every play especially for Lineman (Played Hockey for 13 years and Football for 7). One thing for Rugby tho is way less pads meaning less protection but ive never played full contact Rugby myself so ill have to try it to compare.
My JV year in high-school we shut down a game because the town we were playing in ran out of ambulances that they could spare for the game...team motto that year to break the huddle "mean, nasty, evil"
Growing up I played football, baseball, soccer and track. It was never about the money or making a professional team. It was about the love of the game and bragging rights after game day. At 14 I was the biggest freshman at my school at 6ft3 240lbs. I played right guard offensive line and loved the hardest hits I could give or take. Bring it son! 😈
Many of these were legal, at the time. No horsecollar tackles whereyou tackle (grab by the back of the pads around the neck) No leading with the helmet No hitting a defensless player (ie wr in the air, kicke/punter on their follow through motion) No grabbing the face mask No body slams No blindside blocks Those were done away with because of the injuries they caused The current tackle under review is the "hip drop" Or where the defender tackles from the back wraps his arms around the offensive player and becomes dead weight while dropping to the ground. Causing the defensive player's body to land on the offensive player's legs. Forcing the runners knee to bend inward, and their foot is relatively pointing outwards. Causing a lot of leg injuries. However, you can put your shoulder down and drive through someone with every bit of force you can muster and you can just blast someone with a shoulder pad. For perspective: Just keep in mind the AVERAGE NFL player height and weight is 6'2 245 lbs (188 cm and 112 kg) and the AVERAGE 40 yard dash time is 4.48 seconds, so the newtons of force applied by a single average player is 1740.48N experiencing nearly the same G force astronauts experience during a space shuttle flight per large 2 player collisions
People think it's nuts, but there's something about being hit that hard and popping up 20 seconds later, it's like a life high or something it's crazy.
There are rules against hitting certain ways in football, some hits can get you big penalties, personal fouls, or ejected from the game. There’s also a concussion protocol now in the last few years, they have medical professionals in the crowd that if they feel a hit was too hard the player is benched until they are checked for a concussion. Every year more rules and restrictions come out to protect players health more!
I know I'm late but I used to play American football in HS as a half back/running back. They used me because of how small and bulky I was. So when I came out the pocket it was like a little 5 foot 6 inches cannon ball coming out. As long as they didn't blitz with both middle linebackers it was almost assured we get 5 yards simply because they couldn't see me behind our linemen. One thing I had to do was keep trucking. I was second string our first string half back was super fast and was 6 foot tall so easier to spot but much more elusive. He got all the highlights but coach loved the flexibility he had with the run game. Really made it easy for our QB to make big throws. Never won a championship but we made it to the Semi's twice in our state for AAA Division. I love the game.
at 2:34 i was at that game. people dont realize the size of those guys. Kam Chancellor is 230lbs and vernon davis was one of the best tight ends in the league at that point and he was 6'4 250 at the time. that was the hardest hit ive ever seen in person. i could hear it from the opposite end zone.
