They actually used ray Lewis in a science experiment and found that shoulder pads reduced the force of his hits by 50%. Without them he would have cracked skulls every play with almost 1000 pounds of force with a good hit.

If pads reduced the force of his hits by 50% then he would hit with 4000 pounds of force bc he hit with 2000 with pads

@@jdrummerdd It's the truth. Rugby fans always be talking shit about it, but it's scientificlly proven that even WITH pads.. NFL players hit with harder force, at faster speeds, with on average more mass. Rugby also has more rules on safety when it comes to hits, so by default it's safer as well. I watch both and you can not even compare the speed, much less the tackling ability of an NFL player compared to a Rugby player, sorry to the UK boys out there spouting nonsense.

No they have totally pussifies football. For the money the guys get paid in the NFL. I guarantee if one guys says he doesn’t want to play like it was from the start till about the year 2000. Because he doesn’t want to get cte. There will be 100 guys to take his place. Per position. These guys play a game and become millionaires. If you make it two hand touch. Which it basically is for quarter backs. Then the thrill is gone. Why do most people watch racing. To watch cars go round and round for hours? No, they are waiting for the wreck.

The big fella on the right mentioned that the padding doesn't do much to absorb the impact. He's correct - especially with respect to brain injury. I was once knocked unconscious in a game at the opening kickoff. I came out for one play, as mandated by rule. I went back in, and played the remainder of the game with no recollection at all of what had happened. My next memory was the bus ride back. Blocking is a key part of American football. In other words, while one offensive player is throwing, catching or running with the ball, his teammates are out to put every potential tackling defender on his back. Big violent collisions like these are momentum changing moments in games. The idea, simply put, is to destroy one man in order to intimidate and terrorize ten.

"What's the safest place on the pitch (field)?" The parking lot. I have to be honest, I feel conflicted in watching these videos now, the damage done to so many young men, it's heart wrenching. As much as one can admire the impact of these hits, and the resilience of the men hit, it shows a shocking amount of damage had been caused. Not only in American football, but boxing, MMA and even professional wrestling, anyone remember Chris Benoit? I do, it still saddens me to this day, as I'm sure the loss and injury of so many promising lives does all of us. That's all I have to say about that.
@itsdre9x9
@itsdre9x9 4 года назад
One thing I don't see anyone talking about in the comments is that in the NFL, players can build up speed before laying a big hit.(I don't know if the same can be said for rugby) The most dangerous plays are usually on kickoffs. The kicking team has so much time to build up speed, if the ball carrier has no blockers, or can't evade any tackers, he'll be toast if he's running straight into a defender. Also, WRs(Wide recievers) are vulnerable to these kind of hits as well. They're busy looking for the ball coming towards them. A defender can build up speed and lay a big hit on the WR. Some of the hits in this video are blindside hits(they're illegal now). Pretty self explanatory, but those hits can knock you out(no surprise) You simply don't see it coming. You're looking to your left at the ball carrier you're attempting to tackle, and one of his teammates comes out of nowhere and SMOKES you from your right side. I've been hit by a blindside block, but luckily the guy that hit me was a lineman and simply pushed me instead of trying to take my head off. It still caught me off guard. That's why they say you need to keep your head on a swivel.

Back when I played about 30 years ago, I would regularly hit people like that. However I didn't have the size or speed to create the force that NFL players can create. That was a mixture of High School, College(University) and NFL. Depending on what league they are in some of these hits are either legal or no longer legal. If anything....The pads and helmets make it more dangerous, due to the false sense of security. Most of these guys put on their pads in elementary school, so their whole lives "pads = safety" has been drilled in, so they hit harder. The force of an NFL tackle is a lot higher then a rugby tackle. It has been clocked at about the same level of a head on car crash. There is no safe spot on the field. Cheerleaders, coaches and support staff have gotten tackled. But if you want to be safer go for special teams. Kickers/punters wear smaller pads so you aren't allowed to touch them unless they are still involved in the play, even then it's kind of looked down on.

My man "Mike" is spot on when he described CTE. And the football Helmet is to blame for that. When the sport was in its infintile stage in the early 1900's they wore leather helmets with no face masks. It was safer for the players back then cuz they didn't lead with their heads. The current NFL needs to get rid of the Face mask and I think CTE will go away.

You can’t wait till Saturday mornin’ to watch the game film and earn those hit stickers for your helmet. It gave you a sense of pride, and people knew the players with their helmets full of stickers were some BAAAAD MF’s. Greetings from Texas, across the pond, my brothers. The safest position on the pitch is the kicker. They only come out once every so many plays and there are strict rules about hitting them. I’d say the other position that has a long life in the game is the quarterback. They are a huge target but after they release the ball you aren’t really allowed to touch them. The quarterback and the kicker are the only positions with people dedicated to their protection for the entire game. An offensive line is so important and one of the must underrated positions full of unsung heroes that almost never get any credit.

I'm a Texan who loves American football, but I also enjoy English sports and I've been a massive Liverpool fan since 2006. In the NFL, they have made illegal to initiate a tackle with the crown of the helmet, and they encourage you to initiate the tackle with your shoulder. In Rugby League, a shoulder charge is illegal and can lead to a red card. Just goes to show the difference between what Americans and Brits think is "safe."

Shoulder pads and helmets make it worse to be honest... get the guy that's about to lay a hit on you is protected so he's able to just throw his entire body at you.... It kind of gives us players a false sense of immortality I guess... Like we can't be stopped we can't be hurt.... like nothing's going to happen so you just throw your body at somebody.... The really the best part about a big hit is that usually both players are kind of dizzy.... Because if you're dizzy that normally means the other guy is kind of dizzy too...

the worst hit you can take is when you're not looking on a block when your trying to catch the ball on anything that is the worst hit possible.... Think of it as getting hit by a car as you walking across the street looking down at your phone not expecting it.... what do you expect that you're able to lower your shoulder or prepare yourself for the hit... If you're not looking it's going to hurt a whole lot worse.... That's where they teach you at a young age to keep your head on a swivel.... do not get tunnel vision and just stare straight ahead you have to keep your eyes on the entire field.... it's kind of like that saying and I guess basketball and probably soccer a little bit eyes in the back of your head... You got to have eyes all over your head you got to be looking forward to your right to your left behind you you got to look north south east west Northwest NorthEast Southwest Southeast.... Like you got to look everywhere... It's like Crossing an intersection that has 11 streets leading into it... You got to look at all 11 streets before you cross.... Well you got to make sure you know where all 11 players on the field so you don't get SCHMACKED!

There is not a "safe" position to play, but kicker/punter is the safest since they don't see the field much and aren't generally the target of a vicious hit. If something goes wrong, all bets are off though. Also half of the hits in this video would result in a penalty.

I really love the fact that, while showing an appreciation for the sheer athleticism necessary to play football, you guys also called out how extraordinarily-dangerous the sport truly is. And the danger goes far beyond the players themselves. Just look at the rap sheets of many current/former NFL players. So many counts of domestic violence and assault. It seems apparent that their brains have taken a beating.

Yes you can. You can hit anyone on the field except the kicker as long as you don't wrap them up and tackle them. If someone is blocking for the runner you are allowed to hit them so you can get to the runner. You're also allowed to hit wide receivers as long as its within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Hitting people who don't have the ball is perfectly legal

As a rugby player friend of mine once said, "Rugby is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport." Remember, American kids grow up playing football without pads all the time. Then, these guys get to high school and find out that the game is far more violant when the pads go on. You play very differently with a helmet on. (Then again, I played in the '80s when it was still legal to hit.) In college, I got hit so hard I forgot math. Probably not a good thing.

its important to remember that these are the biggest hits ever. Most players will get hit like this maybe once a season, depending on the position. That being said alot of the smaller hits do add up especially on running backs. About half of these would be considered penalties with today’s rules.
