It's an all-Japan battle in the finals between Ryoichi Tamada (Jeskai) and Kazuyuki Takimura (Abzan). Visit magic.wizards.com/ptbfz for complete coverage of the entire tournament.
Loved his interview where he said he just wanted to be home w his wife. Played flawlessly entire T8 and battled through despite the ridiculous amount of mulligans. May you RIP.
I enjoyed this final more than any other I have seen in the history of magic: Technicians doing 1000010 life for fun? Tamada going yolo and keeping a 0 land hand? Takimura having won and asked what he wants now says I want to go to my wife? This is the spirit. Above all MtG is a game and should be fun even at this level. A lesson for some tight up and pretentious other pros out there
XHeadhunter66 as a generalization, the dual lands/fetches/ shocks, etc. are a staple in any multicolor deck. the enemy colored manlands did help but they made up a small part of the deck compared to the khans block portion of the deck.
+raitosureya01 I think the point was that a huge huge impact that BFZ has was introducing these fetchable lands which allowed for all these insane multi-color decks. If this was still khans block you couldn't get away with playing jeskai charm and crackling doom in the same deck.
+Drew Stassel It's sports commentary- their job is to say things that are obvious and/or doesn't mean anything so you feel like you know more about what's going on. It's at least helpful when you can't see the cards clearly.
It was no surprise that only Jace, Gideon and lands were added to the metagame. What is going to be interesting is watching the Oath and Shadows pro tours, and seeing later sets have to be searched for something, anything, to try in vain to replace the Dragons and Khans glory cards
Little rules question: how is it possible that disdainful stroke counters Hangarbackwalker on X=2? I always thought that for the cmc of a card X is always 0.
+Crimson Dragon I know. I ended up putting it together about 6-7 weeks before it rotated out. I have all the fetches and everything now and I don't play modern so.. lol. I've got a few grand worth of cards that I dunno what to do with
+Eyeforaneye While i understand your frustration, you're technically incorrect. Shambling vents and the BFZ dual lands, and dragon master Outcast also showed up as well.
+Eyeforaneye There were a few more... mostly in sideboards... yeah, so much for BFZ slowing down the format. Apparently nobody even feels like it's worth trying to run a control deck with the new cards to build up mana for eldrazi.
The people responsible for the scoreboard had their parents killed in a rhino stampede when they were four. They responded by giving the Jeskai player 999,990 more life than the Abzan player. The only thing wrong about the Jeskai player getting 1,000,010 life was the fact it was taken away.
I like how throughout the season, that Khor Ally (or Kohr) is just standing in the back the whole time. Watching everyone play. "I wish.... Someone would tap me like that..."
blue give you access to whirler rogue which can make your attacks with nantuko husk more lethal also one of the cards i would like to try is fathom feeder and ingest into blight herder maybe splash green for collected company? idk maybe ill try sultai arsicrats or a grinder blue black control also one card that i dont think has been given credit is grave purge with our sac effect we can get alot of value from that card
You should also try mardu aristocrats, its similar but with creatures like Butcher of the horde and Alesha who smiles at death. The lack of collected company and counter spells is a major hit but the beatdowns and combos are beautiful in my opinion.
I just played a BFZ draft today XD I got 1st place with a ub control deck against OB NIXILIS and GIDEON and Drana, Liberator and people that just had better luck... :)
Why are they playing with dual lands that don't fit their colors??? Tamada has wooded foothills (Red/Green) and Takimura has Flooded Strand (Blue/Black)!!! Also, Tamada is playing with Cinder Glade (Red/Green)??????
This goes a long way towards explaining the new rotation rules. Where is the Battle for Zendikar? I see no allies. I see no landfall. I see no eldrazi.
Just wanted to comment and say: Lands behind nonland permanents, clear target indication for spells and NO FRICKIN' CARD FLICKING!! Also, I appreciate how neat these two fellas are, damn it. In my area I will reach over and straighten other peoples decks out. lol!
So it seems the biggest impact BFZ had on standard was the lands and Gideon. Well done pro-tour. They should have called it 'Pro Tour Khans of Tarkir 2.0' Seems like everyone is playing it safe instead of diving into the new set brewing decks. Yawn!
one could argument that mulling to 5 against a 7 card hand from abzan is very close to a game loss. he just put everything into drawing his lands early
+Andrew Carranza Agreed, the announcers were stunned that he decided to put so much risk into topdecking a land. it was a very risky move. I cant believe he decided to keep a No lands hands.... still stunned at that 4th game.
you can disdainful stroke an x-cost card? Wouldn't the cmc be 0? or 2 at the most? No matter how much mana you put into x, the cmc never changes, right?
haha I thought "Oh yeah finally i can see some BfZ pro gameplay" yeah no its standard :P O_o I've got a sigrist red/blue ensoul deck... i should try to enter somthing before it rolls out of standard.
Oh wait M15 has rotated out so ensouls nolonger viable :) now i understand. Meh its still a good deck. Im sure itd be fine in modern unless parts pf it are banned.
It's called Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar, yet every card, with exception to Gideon and some lands, is from Khans block. Why am I even...Oh, yea...Wonka's golden tickets--present this at the door and receive 100$.
After watching a whole final i must conclude. This game is not about skill, but about money. The amount of choices in this game are subpar once you have a top 8 deck. It are obvious plays.
That's not true. Admittedly, super budget players are less successful but money isn't always the deciding factor. You see the same thing because it's popular and it works.
