I have a Lima class 47 which does the same! it takes off at high speed on maximum speed control and then it doesn't move at all on halfway bogie contacts seem ok! It ran Fine on DC until i fitted an 8 pin decoder thats when the trouble started!! it does run at high speed as above then it wont move at all on halfway speed ? I fitted the same type decoder to a Hornby class 56 which has great slow speed control.. and it runs great too...
Just had a look at his channel , mine was a one off . Mikes Movies asked me to do a video of a motor which I couldn't get to work so he could identify the problem . Now I have a working motor in a Lima Deltic i bought for £10 last week .
Hi, interesting a good video to check. The magnet is ok, that join is common to them all. When you say its weak , if you use a small screw driver, lay the magnet flat and place the metal screw driver inside the magnet touching it, you should almost be able to lift the magnet off the surface (maybe you can) try that and see. Slightly suspicious of that capacitor between the brushes, does it get hot? the sparking is no doubt due to high power. Bearings sound a bit dry but not so bad to cause this. Do the magnet test and get back to me?
Another thought, do you have a multimeter or a way to test the coils on the armature? it is just possible there is a broken wire. You should see 10-15 ohms between each pole.
Hi Mike , I went into town this afternoon and found a non working Lima motor and chassis which I got free of charge . I tried each component in turn and when I got to the armature the motor burst into life ! So now I have a Lima Deltic in good working order . Thank you so much for your help and guidance. Kind Regards David
WOW that was lucky then, I would think the old one might be repairable as well. So glad to have helped out. Do follow my new model railway channel on ru-vid.com all the best, Mike
Yes , this was my first Lima loco so I wasn't sure what I was doing . I replaced the commutator and then followed the servicing guide from Mike's Movies and got the Deltic running really well .
I bought a scrap Lima loco from a local model store and removed the commutator and put it in my non working motor . I reassembled the motor and it worked perfectly.
The old Lima pancake motor is one of the most reliable and easily repaired model train power units ever. This is why there are still so many old Lima trains out there and running. Was never given the credit it deserved back in the day. But now it has become kind of legendary and for good reason. Also Mazok Rot and Zinc Pest will never be a problem for Lima locos.
