Hahaha, this so funny, 'cause I've been seeing your videos for about 3 days now, and it's always like, "Oh, give me a dollar for everytime you say "that bass is dirty" or something related to the bass. I'm actually having a good time watching your vids.
This should have won album of the year. Lorde was robbed. Also Lorde has synesthesia so she associates color with sound. When she commissioned the album art she asked the artist to include the colors that she associated with the album.
I think Lorde was focused on being minimalist but not lacking because she wanted to showcase her songwriting to let it speak for itself. She's one of the greatest lyricist of our time. She just needs a little help from her production and both of them combined, you'll create this unique sound wherein it can't be replicated.
I personally do not think it is minimalistic at all, it is the opposite. Pure Heroin was minimalistic, Melodrama is melodrama, I def do not find it minimalistic. every song has so many elements. maybe it is minimalistic compared to what he usually listens to, but especially in Lorde's standards, this album is def not minimalistic
I kinda disagree. I think Melodrama is kind of maximalist without being loud. Look at Hard Feelings. The break down is insane! So much is happening, whereas Pure Heroine is very chill and minimalist throughout.
Something that honestly irritates me is when people start listening to this album today, and they start saying "This is reminding me of Billie Eilish". Bruhh, Lorde has been that bitch way before Billie was. I swear to god if ya'll let Lorde's new album flop I'm gonna be pissed 😑
when people do that it's perfect normal and natural because it means that they are trying to find a connection to what they already know, i really like this.
MELODRAMA really is aging like the finest wine because the lyrics and the experimental production/sound really is so fucking fresh and real and raw. She really let GO and so did I when I first heard it fully. The music and lyrics really soared within this album. I often revisit it and am reminded how much I miss and appreciate her music.
I'll be honest, I just came here to listen to Melodrama again but with someone. The feeling of sharing the wonderful experience that is Lorde just makes me happy
That “Broadcast the boom boom boom boom and make them all dance to it.” Its the sound of her heart thats why the bass doing the sound of her heartbeat. That’s Genius
Ella called Melodrama “An ode to her teenage years.” She was twenty when the album came out, meaning she was 16-19 during most of the writing and recording, if not all of it. The. Absolute. Fucking. Talent. Wow.
Oh yeah i remember being 19 when this album came out. Id sing her line “im 19 and im on fire” from perfect places. The album resonated with me so much at the time. Now i am 22 and whenever I listen to this album again, all the songs there lyrics just bring me back😢
@@StefV153 For sure. That was my lazy observation while watching this - and if he hasn't listened to Pure Heroine before this (besides Royals and other songs played on radio), then I kinda get how he would call back to Taylor Swift or Halsey when making comparisons etc.
@@tooth-gapmartinez2434 Lorde literally did her album Pure heroine before Lana's album BTD released and tbh they are different To me in style + Lorde style showed up in many artists like Halsey, Troye sivan and more
It's honestly so frustrating. A PROOF that fame and annoying stans overshadow artistic excellence. Lorde is not only robbed of her sound, but also discredited by these butthurt, defensive fans.
I know right? He should’ve react to Pure heroin and see the dates of its release and compare any songs in that date if there will be a sound like lorde… Her sound is so Advanced asf.
First off, Melodrama absolutely the most incredible piece of music Jack Antonoff has produced and also Lorde is insanely creative. The metallic swaying sound at the end of Hard Feelings sounds just like a swing on a playground that’s a little rusted! I’d kill to see the behind the scenes on this album. There’s a podcast that Lorde was featured on and she explained the making of Sober. It’s called Song Exploder
I'd argue Norman F***ing Rockwell is the best this he's produced for other artists. We know jack is good with pop, but NFR showcased his versatility. But yes, he really pulled a lot of tricks for Melodrama. I love that you mention the metallic sounds in Hard Feelings. It's like the sound was supposed to be a violin line. By far my favorite track off Melodrama.
Yes, Lorde change the music in 2013, and with Melodrama inspired a lot of artist you can hear in with Taylor Swift, Halsey and Billie, they took Lorde to make music.
They were released in the same year. Melodrama was in June while Reputation was in November. So i would say, Reputation did not get its sound or is inspired from Melodrama.
Carl Bernardo Yes, you are right! I didn’t realize that until now. So the opposite is also not true. They just have similar sounds because the producer is the same.
The line "they'll hang us in the Louvre, down the back, but who cares, still the Louvre" has actually a double meaning because in the back was where they used to hang people to kill them. This gives the line a whole new perspective. Love from Argentina!
Jack Antonoff used the same melody in "Writer In The Dark" by Lorde (2017) and "Venice Bitch" by Lana Del Rey (2019). And those two songs have kind of a similar theme. I love noticing those little references 🖤
yes finally! but also I feel like Taylor takes a lot of inspiration from Lorde. Lorde always had this sound to her. Taylor started using this darker vibe in Reputation and a little in Lover, while Jack Antanoff and Lorde have a sort of magic partnership like Elton John and Bernie.
Taylor is the first artist whom Jack produced for. Their synth sounds has been there since the beginning. Sweeter Than Fiction, I wish you would and Out of the Woods are all examples of that. Although The Archer is influenced by Lorde which is probably due to Jack Antonoff. I LOOOOOVE them three
listen, i've literally been listening to this album for three years on a weekly basis, and i never would've connected that it sounded similar to taylor's reputation, which only came out 4 months after this album. usually i'm pretty good at noticing details like that in music, but that totally flew by me, and *that's* why i like your reactions. you always give a detailed narrative that only someone like yourself can do, being so involved in the music crowd and industry. because there’s really only a small handful of other good music reaction channels on youtube, such as ajay, ashley ippolito, zach campbel & kioshiwarrior (and dylan will not participate, but he stopped), that give insightful and enjoyable reactions, but of course their videos are based more on their opinions and simply how they react to the song; their personas. you do that, *and* talk about the music itself in a really informing, yet entertaining way. AND, you leave in everything, which is awesome. also i love your shirts and zebra mug, they're rad.
I wanted to add some comments on your interpretations from the album's production. On Green Light, the vocal distortion at the end is actually the use of an electric guitar. Despite the minimalist sound of Sober, the song uses a combination of bongos, trumpets, and saxophones; Lorde actually hid the sound of a tiger's roar before the start of the bridge. You are correct on Liability - those are guitar strums you hear in the background. The Placebo song you referenced on The Louvre is actually a cover. The original artist is Kate Bush and she served as melodic and vocal inspiration for the album, especially on Writer in the Dark. I also want to note that reputation dropped 5 months after Melodrama. I highly recommend you to react to Pure Heroine. She wrote the entire album by herself and one co-writer (Joel Little) between the ages of 14 and 16. A lot of Melodrama, in turn, was written when she was 18 and 20.
Melodrama made reputation and Halsey's album, that album set new standards for pop music production since it's been released, so it's not like Lorde sounds like Taylor, Halsey or Billie but they were straight up influenced by Lorde's music.
Lol no. When he says melodrama sometimes sounds like reputation he doesn't mean Lorde was inspired by Taylor. It's just an easier way to describe the "feel" of the production. The similarity between the two is all Jack Antonoff. Now, Halsey I agree; she does attempt to mimic some of the stuff lorde does but it falls short, tho Manic was a good album
You mean a Scammy? OOP. We shouldn't even care about those no more, they don't define any kind of excellence at this point, they are a fucking joke. This album is a masterpiece.
Does anyone else think that more and more "pop" artists are staring to create music that's not meat to be played "on the radio" or be "pop hits" but just music that they actually want to create? I think that the popularity of streaming platforms like Spotify and iTunes has allowed that, and I LOVE IT!
I hope this tendency gets so infectious that more famous artists like Shakira or Coldplay start to make the music they really want to create. A lot of famous mainstream artists want to sell charts, produce money and they just care of being relevant at the point they betray themselves and they forget about their true identity in art and significant music.
I'm one of the commentors who suggested Melodrama, dude, this Album is one of the 'no skip' play for me, and let's be honest Lorde's lyrics in this record is emotional, deep and melancholy, like, when she sings from 'I care for myself the way I used to care about you', to 'The truth is I am a toy that people enjoy, 'Til all of the tricks don't work anymore'. I mean c'mon!! All thee emotions.
1989 was literally 1989 pop vibes, Reputation was darker and the sound itself matched it . Lover was more like euphoria and its vibe matched the sound . plus Jack antonoff was the producer behind taylor's pop album ...
this album is an experience ...Bowie was right when he said she's the future of music!!! lorde's creativity is amazing ...!! great reaction ! Please do Pure Heroine by Lorde and Pang by Caroline Polachek (i think this one is very similar with melodrama -- it gives you the vibes of an experience )
Yeah! I love that more people associate the instrumentals of Pang and Melodrama. Both albums sound very similar, share the same genres of Ambient, Art Pop and Dream Pop 🌠💐👌
@@alextint5987 right? I love that so many more are implementing the same sounds and at the same time they creating their own version 😍 I hope it doesn't get so mainstream
Her lyrics in Homemade Dynamite, “Might get your friend to drive, but he can hardly see We'll end up painted on the road Red and chrome All the broken glass sparkling I guess we're partying” is one of my favorite lyrics even to this day. Something about how she sings it creates such a detailed picture of a car crash. A very dark lyric but very real.
I feel like I didn’t appreciate melodrama enough the first time I listened to it. Cause I was just starting to get into lorde, so instead of appreciating it i just listened through it. L3s gonna be an experience bro
This album didn't win the album of the year that's why it's called scammys and one of the producers is Jack Antonoff who worked with Taylor in 1989, Reputation and Lover, you need to react to Pure heroine her first album
When he said Melodrama reminded him of Reputation, he meant the same producer duh. He's a producer, of course he's going to focus on the musical aspect and the production instead of the lyrical content or else the video would be like 3 hours. Yall getting super defensive for nothing lol
Instrumentals express the emotion and feelings of the lyrics. The sound and lyrics complement each other very well. I see that a lot of users dislike the music reactors who focus in instrumentals. It's obvious that Blake cares about the lyrics and he feels the stories of those songs, but he is a producer 👌
yes. the magnitude of this piece of art is far from being even analizable by a regular music related person. Every time you listen to it you find more and more that makes the full picture of melodrama. Lorde along jack are really geniuses.
Carlos Asan they are working together again for the next record. In the last email she sent she said they were already working on some stuff. I know whatever they do its gonna be good. Personally i hope they dont try to make something alike melodrama cause there is no way to reach that level again. I would like her to make something different like mixing different things into an album and you know, individual songs that works each one on itself instead of a whole concept album. But we’ll see... We can be sure we wont be dissapointed.
This is one of my all time favourite albums and whenever I recommend this to someone, no matter what they usually listen to, they enjoy it. This album is gorgeous. It's so crazy how you point out several things and even though I've listened to this album countless times, I find something new. Just how artistic this album is. Love the video
When he wants to tell us what comes next in the song based on his experience with music and then the song takes another direction because lorde's not like every other pop musician hahaha
You might like the homemade dynamite remix! Also, I'd love to hear your thoughts on her first album pure heroine; in particular, the song ribs has become my generation's (for lack of a better phrase) cult classic song. It's very ethereal. So I think it'd be rad to hear your perspective on it!
I feel like the long fadeout of supercut really ties the song together. The lyrics are all about remembering the good times from a past relationship (the supercut of it), and the long fadeout feels like a time where you can reminisce with her. Pure Heroine and Melodrama are both masterpieces.
In The Louvre, the steady beat you hear is supposed to represent Lorde's heartbeat, that's the boom boom boom booom she's talking about broadcasting, her heart through her songs ("megaphone to my chest, broadcast the boom boom boom boom and make 'em all dance to it").
Lorde is such an album artist and it’s beautiful. Every single song in an album of her has a purpose and a meaning which a lot of artists don’t often do
this reminds me of people reacting to bowie's albuns and saying "oh, sounds like x and y artist" ... Melodrama influenced the whole pop scene that we have today but still underrated...how? and i really hope that LORDE'S next project doesnt flop for people thinking that she sounds like everybody else when everybody who sounds like her
I'll be honest... i just clicked cos I love me some lorde and this guy looked cute BUTTT the tips and tidbits he gives about everything is so insightful. Thanks for sharing :D
The fact that it reminds you of Running Up That Hill is insane. She talks about this song a lot. If you went to the Melodrama tour, the last song before her show started was always Running Up That Hill. This song is so special for us Lorde fans haha
Please react to The 1975s second album “I Like it When You Sleep For You Are so Beautiful Yet so Unaware of It”!! also, you definitely have to read the lyrics to this album! Matty is hard to understand but their lyrics are SO amazing.
This album deserves 1000 Grammys... Lorde is like Halsey but with more surprises in her music. So artistic. Also if you're into jack antonoff stuff you should listen to norman fucking Rockwell. That's a greatttt album and the production is amazing.
I think halsey is good regardless of the haters...she’ll never be as good as lorde but Hopeless Fountain Kingdom/Room 93 are some of my favorite albums
I love this album and think it’s a masterpiece. I listened to it a full two years at least. Still sprinkle in Lorde on my playlist all the time. I just read she’s working on L3.
An extra thing about the Homemade dynamite remix: if you're familiar with all the featured artists there, Khalid, Sza and Post Malone, you're gonna notice that they are not just singing on someone else's song but they're actually putting their own style and spin on it. Khalid's verse feels like something out of 'American Teen', his album, For Sza's verse, you can definitely tell that's Sza, that's her whole vibe & style and Post Malone's verse, I don't even have to say anything haha It's just a perfect combination! 😭 It's fresh, it's rare, it's a masterpiece!
@@user77797 I really love Lana Del Rey and I like Ultraviolence but I feel like that album really has some production issues, it could have been way better if other producers had worked on it
also that song you mentioned "running up that hill" is originally by an artist called kate bush, she was one of the greatest singer/songwriters/artists of her time if i'm honest, that part in writer in the dark where you mentioned the creepy element, i'd refer to that as a histerical voice, which kate bush also liked to do sometimes, honestly you should react to one or 2 of kate bush's albumns, i think you'd find them interesting for sure.
Fun fact: The drums used at the beginning of "Loveless" is a sample of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins (one of the most famous drum sequences; I've listened to this album 50+ times and just found out last week)
I dont know why these stans just can't seem to accept that Lorde is one if not the most influential pop artist of the decade. Stans can babble all they want but they cant take away the day Pure Heroine was released that changed pop nusic forever. Now, the meteoric Melodrama comes and you guys start discrediting her. Give acclaim when it's due and stop being so defensive. Lorde will conitnue to transform music whether you lile it or not and your faves will take notes and follow!
So so glad you reacted to this album!!! I remember when this album came out I was so so super obsessed with her voice and the production of the album. I really related to theses songs. I hope Lorde releases some new music in 2020!!🤞🏼🤞🏼 (Side fact I also found it extremely interesting that David Bowie acknowledged Lorde before his death and said she represents the future of music for him- huge complement)
That placebo “running up that hill” track you referenced is actually a cover of Kate Bush who originally did the track, and I think you’d dig the similarities between Lorde and Kate as well. Bush is definitely a huge influence on Lourdes sound. It’s so interesting that you picked up that vibe!
Damn, special place in my heart for this album and there are things you mentioned I hadn’t noticed that make me enjoy it even more! Whatever speakers you use I want
Fun fact for you: Running Up That Hill is originally a Kate Bush song, who Lorde loves! And she chose the song to play right before she comes onstage during her Melodrama World Tour.
Literally have been waiting for this. I feel like I always wait for new reactors/reviewers to react to Melodrama... My entire opinion about the youtuber is based on how they rate Melodrama lollllll
To me this is a pre-thunderstorm summer day album. You know, when the air is heavy and it’s humid. That’s when I love to listen to it. Very specific, but I love it.
I like your take on Writer in the Dark. It is kinda sinister, almost had this creepy, psychotic vibe. The way she bends her voice and the immediate alternates from low to almost to a screech. Also the lines “I’ll love you til you call the cops on me.” It’s like that person who was left by her lover for another and her thoughts are in such a confused state hence the very nonlinear arrangement. And yes, the layering of the piano makes it feel that’s she’s all doing this in a dark, dark room. I’ve always loved this album and Lorde, of course, and I always focused more on the lyrics and vocals, as other reviewers do. But from a producer’s point of view, it’s a whole lot different. I’m so happy I found this review since I think Lorde’s songs are really nonlinear in structure.
