A quick tip about MELODRAMA: This entire album was produced to "synthesize" a SINGLE NIGHT PARTY of someone who had just left a relationship, went to a party, got drunk, ended up meeting his same ex at the party, kissed him in and then came home thinking you had the worst night of your life for being with the person who hurt you when should love and care for you.

the louvre is just a masterpiece, she says “we’re the greatest, they’ll hang us in the louvre, down the back but who cares? still the louvre” and it was in the louvre where they performed mass executions by hanging people in the back of the museum. also she says “megaphone to my heart, broadcast the boom boom boom boom and make ‘em all dance to it” and the beat reflects her heartbeats

She likes to use play on words or double meanings like in Green Light when she said "those great whites, they have big teeth, I hope they bite you" the obvious meaning is a shark but when you look at the rest of the lyriccs you see she means white lies coming back to bite you. Same thing with hang us in the louve obvious meaning being hanging a painting but actually she means hanging like you said because right before she said "to sit in hell with you".

Fun fact: the Louvre is a modern day museum but an execution ground back in the day. So the line "They'll hang us in the Louvre" is a double entendre - like, they'll hang us on the wall like a museum piece, but they might also execute us by hanging.

I think it was needed of Lorde to go the way she went. Because Melodrama would not remain THIS melodrama if she had made another album with the out of the world drums and production. You grew up with Pure Heroine, Melodrama is the party and now you have to "sober" up. And that hung over maybe IS solar power, to just sit out basking under the sun, listening to the cicadas. But Solar Power is not just that. Its a realisation and disconnection from the past that were dark, but her most brightest years. Now its brighter with Solar Power, but the messages and narrative all throughout the album is dark. So in some truth, people don't actually like the mundane, drilling darkness. But i personally love Solar Power.

EXACTLY! If Lorde did something similar in L3 as Melodrama, Melodrama wouldn't be the same. The reason why Melodrama is so good and so significant is because THERES NO OTHER ALBUM LIKE IT! So if she did make another album similar, it would just cancel out the significance of Melodrama's rare production.

Lorde has synesthesia. She visualises aurally in colours and textures. The way she describes synesthesia is along the lines of mist and hues engulfing her (well, that's how I interpreted it :). This album was already exceptional but then i began to decipher something deeper that transcends the individual songs and interlocks the entire album in a giant metaphor of a party being compared to a relationship . ((this has probably been elaborated on in much greater detail and just better by someone else but whatevs)) so in GREEN LIGHT, (again just my interpretation) she is just getting out of a relationship and is waiting for the metaphorical green light to move on. the track has a very obvious and abrupt switch to a piano dance beat which to me symbolizes her entering the club/party in search of the green light (aka another lover to help her move on). In SOBER, the beat is hazy and the falsetto voices in the background repeat “night, midnight, lose my mind,” which to me symbolizes her getting drunk at the party. The whole track is shrouded with haziness to carry the ‘drunk’ ambiance through, and lyrically, she’s lamenting on what she and her lover will not only think of each other once they’re sober, but also how they’re going to deal with the consequences of their recklessness when the hype is gone. HOMEMADE DYNAMITE gives me kinda Bonnie and Clyde vibes. The thought of her and her partner “blowin’ shit up with homemade dynamite” makes me feel like they are each other’s ride or dies. She is in a state of euphoria because the relationship that she had worried might have been a drunken mistake turned out to be the experience of a lifetime. THE LOUVRE continues this idea but adds even more emotion. “megaphone to my chest//broadcast the boom (x4) and make them all dance to it” not only shows us the large extent to which she feels for her partner, but also reminds us that her love life and career are very closely intertwined. (the songs that she makes about her feelings are put out into the world for us to enjoy/dance to) Lorde mentions that “they’ll hang us in the louvre//down the back, but who cares?//still the louvre.” while this originally sounds just like a quirky little addition, it’s actually a fact that originally, the back of the louvre was used for pictures of wanted criminals, which further enhances that Bonnie and Clyde dynamic from homemade dynamite. Now, whether or not this ‘back of the louvre’ detail was historically intentional or not i don’t know but i like to believe it was. In LIABILITY, Lorde goes from the highest high to the lowest low. Once the spark runs out, her lover was ultimately run off by her hectic life as an international superstar and she takes it personally. She feels like it might be impossible to find someone that could overlook her work life and just love her for her. (p.s. taylor has a similar song called peace which just happens to be my favorite track off folklore but i digress). However despite Lorde’s sorrow, she assures us that she still loves herself. In HARD FEELINGS, it seems like more time has passed and Lorde is ruminating on the end of the relationship. It’s possible that this was the first real relationship she ever had and by that i mean the first person to truly betray her love and break her heart. Then we move on to LOVELESS, and i think at this point is when she re-enters the party (as it starts with another upbeat, clubby-sounding beat) to try to get her mind off of the end of her last relationship. The lyrics seem really bitter and sardonic-she says that they’re in the loveless generation, but it’s very obvious in this point in the album that Lorde feels things very deeply and truly. Perhaps it’s a commentary on the lovers, or i guess “lovers,” that she’s had… only really in it for the rush and the sex and the hype, and then leave once the real responsibilities of love become apparent, leaving lorde heartbroken, and then both her and her exes are…..loveless. In SOBER II (MELODRAMA) (which is my personal favorite from the album, that damn beat drop never fails to get me hype) the party has ended yet again, made apparent by the repetition of “cleaning up the champagne glasses.” It seems to me like she is very jaded and slightly hopeless by this point in the album, “all the gunfights//the limelights//the holy sick divine nights.” I’m not quite sure if the person she’s with in this song is a random person from the party or a booty call from her ex from sober I, but nevertheless i think the reason she sounds so jaded in the verses in the second half of this track is because she realizes the volatility of party-born romances, “i know you won’t remember in the morning when i speak my mind//lights are on and they’ve gone home, but who am i?” she’s clearly questioning her whole lifestyle of party after party and spilling all of her qualms and anxieties about her youthful generation, and kinda hedonist society in general, “the terror and the horror//god i wonder why we bother//the glamour and the horror//we kiss and kill each other” are just some examples. My favorite line in this whole album is “we told you this was melodrama.” not only does it remind the listener that this narrative is clearly hyperbolized and heavily accented, but it’s also (in my opinion) a summary of this whole party/fever-dream aesthetic that this album embodies….it’s melodrama. WRITER IN THE DARK sounds to me like the musical equivalent of sobbing uncontrollably. The whole song is just one big cathartic exhale where she releases all of her sadness related to that relationship from the first half of the album. She reveals her seemingly endless aquifer of love for this person that remains untapped, “i love you till my breathing stops.” but the really cool thing to me is when she harkens back to that Bonnie and Clyde thing from earlier-partners in crime, when she says “i love you till you call the cops on me.” she felt like their love was as magnetic and exciting as blowing shit up with homemade dynamite, which would make them criminals, and that love was so infamous that their “wanted” pictures should be hanging in the back of the louvre, and it only will stop when they call the cops on her…🤯 It’s clear that despite Lorde’s obvious sadness about the relationship ending, she still has a soft spot in her heart for her ex, and that becomes even more apparent in SUPERCUT. if you’re not aware, the word “supercut” is a digital media term which basically means highlight reel, or cutting out all the bad and only including the best footage in a video, and that’s exactly what she’s doing to her memories of the relationship, she’s compiling all the best aspects of her partner, but when she goes to reach them she realizes it was just her own idealized projection of them and stops herself. (i’m assuming “ribbons wrap me up” is referring to reels of video footage but i may be mistaken, feel free to correct me). I personally love the part of the song when she says “in your car, the radio up//we keep tryna talk about us” because it gives me the impression that in her memory the sound of the radio drowns out the tough discussion about her relationship, almost like involuntary censorship. in LIABILITY REPRISE, we’re back at the party (“and maybe all this is the party”) Lorde finally is able to let go of her insecurities and heal her own wounds which were inflicted in liability. I think the simple ending “leave” symbolizes her expelling her supercut/memories of her past relationship, which takes us finally to PERFECT PLACES, which to me sounds like unbridled joy and ambition. finally being able to let go of her demons has allowed Lorde to actually enjoy just having fun with friends. she wants to go to perfect places, yet doesn’t know what perfect places are…but she doesn’t really care, she’s just happy with the the journey of looking for “perfect places” with her friends and having fun, rather than having meaningless sex and temporary passion (“all the nights spent off our faces”). aaaaaanyways i can’t believe i just wrote a whole damn essay about this album. actually i can believe it because melodrama is literally transcendent musical material lyrically, sonically, melodically, vocally, emotionally, thematically……..just……..everything. feel free to drop your thoughts about this album or about my interpretation in the comments, i just love talking about this album and i’d like to see what other people have to say about it

You are a gem and pure musical soul, and watching you as a musician vibe the heck out to tunes has become my new favourite thing. Like going to a gig or driving round with your best mates blasting tunes and just feeling the music.. Knew you were going to flip listening to this masterpiece. Your Green Light reaction alone was 👌🏼 let alone the rest of the record. I say don’t be afraid to make these videos *longer* - like your T Swift and Billie Eilish reactions. I love hearing you go on a journey with lyrics and the tunes from beginning to end. I would genuinely watch your unedited supercut (lol Lorde ref, snap) of you listening to this whole record uncut. This is all just to say that your videos are just pure joy to me, so thank you!! Vibed and subscribed.

No matter how many years go by, I always look for Melodrama reaction videos to see how people react listening to this masterpiece for the first time. Thank you for this. I would definitely recommend "Sawayama" by Rina Sawayama if you haven't heard it before! The production is insanely good and it's right up there in my list of top albums!!

The album is loosely based off the events of a single house party. It starts with her getting ready and heading to the party in Green Light, then the next 2 tracks she’s enjoying herself at said party. In The Lovre she starts to think about the feeling you have at the beginning of a relationship or crush, and falls down into liability. The rest of the album she is coming to terms with being alone

fun facts: the weird "door" noise at the bridge of hard feelings its actually a recorded trumpet. its funny seeing all the things people think it is, other yts say its a gym mat or an elephant. and also in perfect places, the "sh sh" sound lorde does near the chorus, represents a gun. thats why she said "i'll blow my brains out to the radio"

i ADORE this album, it's my favorite of all time. it came out during my senior year of high school and i used to go out partying every single week as green light and perfect places and supercut blasted from my headphones. melodrama truly made me feel alive and i was able to see lorde perform live in 2018 and it was a SURREAL experience. this album means the absolute world to me and to think that after four years it still holds up better than most album of the last decade brings me an insane amount of joy.

btw, in the Louvre, she sang "broadcast the boom boom boom boom and make 'em all dance to it", it's to depict her heartbeat, and the drop is basically to represent heartbeats also, they hid a tiger roaring sound in between the 2nd chorus and the bridge in Sober there are so many more to figure out, and it'll definitely give you chills when you find them out
