Ghana Lithium Deal - Prof PLO Lumumba Criticises Unfair Ghana Lithium Deal With Australian Mining Company - Ghana recently inked a deal with Barari DV Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Australian Mining firm Atlantic Lithium Limited. The deal granted the Australian mining company a 15-year mining lease to commence the mining of lithium at Ewoyaa in the Central Region of Ghana. Atlantic Lithium Limited will receive exclusive access to a 42.63 square kilometre area containing a staggering 25.6 million tonnes of lithium ore but in exchange, the government and people of Ghana are getting just 10% royalty from the mining of their lithium. This unfair deal sparked a lot of outrage from Ghanaians and Pan-Africanists alike, and now, renowned Pan-African scholar Professor P.L.O Lumumba has waded into the conversation, criticising the agreement and using it as a cautionary tale for other African countries. What did Prof Lumumba have to say about Ghana's unfair lithium agreement deal, and what can other African countries learn from it? In today's video, we will offer deep insights into these questions and more.
Prominent African academic Professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba has joined the chorus of Ghanaians disapproving of the lithium exploration agreement struck between the Ghanaian government and Barari DV Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Australian mining firm Atlantic Lithium Limited. The popular academic was in Ghana for "The Convention," a highly-anticipated Pan-African event organized by the New Africa Foundation, scheduled to take place at the Black Star Square in Accra, Ghana on January 7th, 2024. Besides Lumumba, other renowned Pan-African Activists such as Julius Malema from South Africa, former Nigerian presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Former Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, were set to deliver a speech at the event. However, the event was cancelled under mysterious circumstances and further halted by the country's national security operatives and officials from the Ghana Police Service, fueling speculation about the Ghanaian government's involvement in infringing on freedom of association and free speech.
