Ghana lithium - Outrage in Ghana as the country hands over Lithium discovery for cheap to Australian firm - Several Ghanaians and Pan-African observers are calling on the Ghanaian parliament to refuse to ratify a lithium mining deal widely considered unfair, exploitative, and not in the best interest of Ghanaians. In October 2023, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, signed the first-ever Lithium Lease Agreement deal with Barari DV Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Australian mining firm Atlantic Lithium Limited, granting them a 15-year mining lease to commence the construction and mining of lithium at Ewoyaa in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region of Ghana. The Ewoyaa lithium deposit is estimated to cover a 42.63 square kilometre area and hold a massive 25.6 million tonnes of lithium ore, containing approximately 0.31 million tonnes of lithium, making it a highly valuable resource for Ghana's economy and the global lithium market. This prospect is highly valued by Ghana as it seeks to play a role in producing a key ingredient in electric vehicle batteries, which are in high demand as countries look to phase out fossil-fuel vehicles
Atlantic Lithium Limited began lithium exploration at Ewoyaa in 2017 and discovered high grades of the mineral in commercial quantities. Under the country's mining laws, if a company conducts exploration and discovers minerals in commercial quantities, it is entitled to first refusal if it wants to mine the mineral and is entitled to a mining lease to that effect. Therefore, Ghana basically had no choice but to strike a deal with Atlantic Lithium. However, under this deal signed between the Ghanaian government and Atlantic Lithium Limited, the government of Ghana is getting just a 10% royalty and 13% free carried interest, although this surpasses the existing 5% and 10%, respectively, for other mining agreements. This implies that the government would own 13% of Lithium Atlantic. It would also acquire an additional 6% of the company's shares and 3.06 % of the holding company, both of which are listed on the Australian and London Stock Exchanges. This brings the total government stake in the local company to 19% and 3.06% in the foreign holding company. The royalty paid to the host communities has also been increased from the standard 5% to 10% and to create jobs within the value chain and the company must also process the mined mineral locally by adding value to it. Indeed, Atlantic Lithium is also expected to build a chemical plant at its operation site four months after signing the lease agreement with the Ghanaian government for value-addition purposes.

Paliament should not ratify it or should simply block the deal. I support additional and further investigation into how quickly this deal was even put together. How stupid and dumb can we be selling everything we own under the ground? Please suspend the deal and solicit ideas on how to exploit this resource for the benefit of the country. My personal opinion is that any deal should involve " public-Private-partnership" so the country will not just handover our resources to anyone. Did anyone consider the national security implications of handing over our resources to a foreign investor only to give us tokens in whatever taxes they feel like paying? There should be at least 50:50 PPP agreement with any willing partner, take it or leave it. Lithium is in very high demand with the rise in electric cars prodution and also green energy revolution. We have sold all our resources while we run to IMF and World Bank to be dictated to. We are our own enemies, behaving like children.

If the 1960's post-colonial mentality continues to rule, then the 2063 agenda is already dead, and Africans will not see any prosperity. Trillions of dollars more in wealth will continue to leave Africa. We just cannot trust the future in the hands of the older generation. There needs to be more than outrage. Ghanaians should act. An independent country is ruled by an Executive and a Legislature. The people are represented through the legislature. Therefore, if the Executive will not protect their interests, then the people of Ghana should act to protect themselves. They should demand that their representatives in the Legislature change the law, so that in this case and all future cases Ghananians, and not the foreign investor are the principal beneficiaries. Rulers in Africa talk a lot, but they behave that they are not the real rulers of their countries. Their actions over the past six decades have been the same. The countries they have ruled are the minor beneficiaries in mining agreements, why? Then short of cash they go around the world begging and borrowing. One could easily see why unemployment and poverty persists. Just outrageous!

In my view, there are two issues at play here: 1/ Mineral research is both expensive and risky. The video does not discuss that. Ghana probably does not have the resources necessary to conduct research which can last 10 years with no guarantee. 2/ The video does not mention the vital issue of land remediation. We know that mining pollutes: heavy metal, cianid and other harmful substances remain in the tailings: what provisions has the government taken to make sure that those harmful substances are stored in safe places for at least 100 years? The mining business is not just the here and now. It is also about tomorrow and holding mining companies liable the 10 or 20 years following official mine closure.

You can't surrender the riches of this continent to foreigners like this! Look elsewhere for comparison and benchmarking. Ghana must up its stake for this and ensure she gets over 50% the proceeds from mining and refining gold.

Ghana should have stayed steadfast and insist lithium battery factories to be put up in their country so as to export finished product.Zimbabwe did it it is better for the resource to remain in their country unexploited if the mining company can not meet the demands.Exporting raw material is a resource curse no good deal be reached.

The Ghanaians will not perish if they dont let this company exploit their resources. The project and the money will not benefit the people of Ghana at all. There is no need for the exploitation. Not only There are other dignified ways to bring wealth to Ghanas coffers but also there are different schemes that can be exploited to give employment to your citizens. In fact employment to all citizens can be done to work to clean and maintain the nation. To be vigilant about meaningful employment that strengthen the nation and its people. There is a employment for all Ghanaians its called nation building. Not slavery to foreign interests.
