Without question the most common question I get asked when it comes to my videos is "What clippers did you use"? Especially the videos on GQ.
Normally I would tell you that it isn't about the clippers its about the skills of the barber... a great pair of clippers won’t produce great results without a skilled set of hands using them… But, I wanted to see how far that statement holds up. So I went to the drugstore to pick up a set of the CHEAPEST tools I could find and I called up one of my toughest haircut clients to see if I could do at least a half decent job on his haircut.
The results were very interesting.
Hopefully this video will shine some light on which home grooming tools are most necessary when it comes to quality.
Thanks for watching!

I can relate to this but on a chef level. I always get asked what knives I use and how much they cost, them thinking that makes all the difference. In reality, it truly is the person behind the tool, we usually learn on average or sub par equipment and get really proficient with them. So when you do cross that line into "higher end tools", you realize all the little niche details, comfort, quality of life aspects, etc behind a more refined tool, something you can only pick up on when the technique has been honed to a high level and why you can use average tools and achieve stellar results because technique will always come out ontop. Buying a $1000 knife will not compensate your lack of 15 years and growing of experience that I garnered.

Since 2006 I'm my own hairdresser. The key is the equipment. There are some very good brands on the market. After no shave November, I decided to grow a beard. After the first month I visited a barber shop in Pécs. It had good Google reviews. The barber absolutely messed my beard. So I came to learn from you and from the other professional barbers in YT, then do it for myself. Now I'm satisfied with my beard and hair. Thx for all your efforts! Your contents are top notch.

The conclusion that a high-end trimmer may be more important than a high-end clipper was useful. It made up my mind about getting the Babyliss trimmer (the combo with the foil shaver everyone seems to use). I'll go with a more affordable clipper (for now). Your videos have been a huge help in my beard-quest.

This was sooooo good! As a career mechanic I've gotta say that there's a definite increase in pleasure of using quality tools - not only in the use, but also the result. I wouldn't say they make me perform better by default, but appreciating the feel in hand does in some way lend itself to me feeling like I've done better work. As to @Dan comment (which I agree with his entire sentiment) that we all learn our trades with inferior tools, as we grow in our crafts we appreciate the subtle differences in mediocre vs outstanding craftsmanship and I'll be damned if that doesn't bring some satisfaction to the table! I recently purchased a Wahl cordless Legend in an effort to apply some of your lessons, and while I may be a total hack at beard care, those things sure feel sweet in hand!

once i was traveling and didn't have the haircut for 4 weeks, I had a simple undercut so I decided to go the the barbershop to get a 1 on the sides, I think the real barber was on Hollidays and whoever was in the shop just was a volunteer😅 I had stripes 1 cm wide left behind and patches in my hair, I couldn't believe it 😅😅😅 so I decided to fix it my self, I got scissors for 3 euro and a hello kitty comb for 55 cent 😁 I couldn't get clippers, as I was backpacking and didn't want to carry it, it took me a bit, but I fixed it, I ended up doing a few more haircuts on other people with it, it did work, was fun, some good memories ☺ but the way I see it, if you drive an old rusty car, it would still get you to your destination, but it would be much nicer to get there with a good quality functioning car ☺ nice tools, are just so much nicer to work with ☺ very nice video ☺

Someone mentioned in a comment already, but I search and search trying to find a barber like yourself and always end up having to go to the same place where I feel they don't really take the time to understand what exactly I'm wanting. But also trying to find somebody that has the same kind of style as you. It would also just be nice to have someone with all of this understanding of men's grooming that could explain things to me of what would work best and what wouldn't. How do you style your hair and which products do you use?
@dariosarti2791
@dariosarti2791 5 месяцев назад
My biggest issue with low-end tools is their ability to keep a sharp blade. I have a very hard beard hair and all the popular tools (Gillet, Wilkinson, Braun, Philips OneBlade and all the cheap razor blades) are useless after only 5-10 shaves. That is why I went with a straight razor (classic stone sharpened), a safety razor with Feather black blades and now a strong clipper is coming my way. The difference now is that Feather razor blades stay sharp for 2 months of shaving (and are not rubbish after 3 shaves) and I can always re-sharpen my straight razor and it works for a month as well. The (actually pretty expensive) Oneblade became dull after just about 10 shaves and now I'm left with hairs cut to the half of their width. When it's new everything will cut, the question is how long. In the long run, equipment DOES matter. :)

Its always the tool, yes a blunt knife can still cut, if the user happens to apply more force...however, you want something that requires less effort. Also 2500+? No, you're getting jerked, the local dominicans are using at most, $150 clippers and trimmer. Wahl and Andis are the most reliable brands. The Andis t-liner (corded) is 50-60, and its the most common liner you'll see in barber shops. Thats 7200 blade strokes per minute for under 100... Even on the table shown, you have at most 550-600 worth of tools. If you're paying anything more than $200 for any clipper or trimmer, you're either getting jerked or don't know how to shop. Plenty of youtube channels on here showing some of the crispiest faades with low level instruments.
@mattyconradgrooming
@mattyconradgrooming Год назад
Never at any point did I say that you require 2500 worth of tools to do a good job. But these tools did. I have. 3 clippers set out each averaging $180-200, 2 trimmers that each cost over $150, a pair of Japanese haircutting scissors that cost $1100 a pair of texturizing shears that cost $500, a razor that cost $150, two shavers that both cost about $250 and a bunch of combs, brushes, capes etc… professional barber gear is not cheap and it adds up. Nothing to do with shopping ability. The andis t outliner corded used to be the best I agree… but most people opt for cordless because they provide more freedom of use. And honestly they haven’t been good in years. Ever since they switched their manufacturer. But if you can find one in Canada for that price you claim. I’ll take a dozen. Regardless I think you’ve missed the point of the video.
@earthtoandy_
@earthtoandy_ Год назад
No one should feel constrained by tools and think they can’t start based on tools alone. We all start with bad tools and work our way up, in any discipline. It is the person behind the tool that matters most for sure… HOWEVER…if you are serious about this, save your money and get a good set. I finally did and invested in clippers and a trimmer. The difference and experience is meaningful and really improves results once you have some baseline skill to use them. And beyond that, you will frustrate yourself buying cheap sets over and again. Yes the cost is high at first, but in the long run it’s very much worth it.

Thanks for another great video! I believe that a skilled barber can do an awesome job regardless of the quality of the tools, it’s just going to take far more effort to reach the same level as with quality tools and over time that’s going to lead to tendinopathies like deQuervain’s or ring finger tenosynovitis. It won’t be a problem for someone doing their own trimming, but it will definitely affect a barber who’s cutting and trimming ten heads per day.

I think the difference between pro level equipment and entry level/cheapest available equipment isnt so much IF cheap equipment can do a good job, its whether or not it can do the job day after day. I play live music as well as teach golf for a living and my equipment for drums probably costs $10,000..could i make a $500 kit sound great? Absolutely, ive played for 23 years..but I KNOW that my $10,000 kit will be the same everyday. No matter if its hot or cold, at elevation, indoors or outdoors, or at a club or a stadium. So if it’s the barber and not the tools… and you didn’t care for these tools… I, not being a barber, would need the best tools to make up for my lack of skill! 🤣

Exactly!!! Buying the best tools won’t necessarily make you any better at cutting hair. But even the most skilled barber will be limited by poor quality tools.

@@mattyconradgrooming 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I'm very sorry, I meant to say pronounce. I'm so dumb 😂🤦‍♂️ I looked up several ways to pronounce lever and they all agreed it was pronounced: "leh·vr". Is it different when refering to the lever on a clipper?

Well, dollar to doughnuts I'm gonna bet you did the hair cut gratis. So yeah, if I could save a few Jacksons for a haircut like that, I'd be satisfied too. However overall, I think you were very fair with the equipment.
