no joke, I love this channel not only because of Matt's humor but because of what I learn about civil engineering. My grandfather was a civil engineer in my hometown for like 40+ years, and getting to know a bit more about what he did (mostly ;) ) it's really cool. His claim to fame is that he designed the intersection in front of the Santa Anita Racetrack (where Seabiscuit raced), which is a ridiculous intersection of roads. Anyway, appreciate the humor and the education, as well as the highly realistic driving (shortcuts through cornfields and casually cutting everyone off :) )

@@rubixloverful it sounds silly, but when Matt was talking when he turned the flashing lights on and off on his truck, I remember my grandpa complaining when he'd see crews driving around with their lights flashing because they're only supposed to have them on when they're stationary or on the shoulder. Also telling me why tree trimming isn't just cosmetic but also has an actual city purpose. Small details, but nice memories (my grandfather died 5 years ago, so there's some of that nostalgic feeling watching these videos too).

Smart has a lot of definitions. Self serving is often considered smart in our individualist mindsets. But from the overall perspective of a systems engineer... Unfortunately the system isn't designed to properly reward good work, sadly there are often disincentives to work smarter instead of harder

"We're obviously not in the UK because we're driving on the wrong side" Well, for me it's all perfect. This game is set in Germany (as you can see by the license plates on the cars and, the most obvious giveaway: The "Ausfahrt"-Sign), so everything is as it's supposed to be. Well, except for the part with traffic passing by at 70mph, seems like you haven't put up a sign with an "80" on it to tell the traffic to only drive at 80km/h or roughly 50mph, so if it's a part of the Autobahn where only Richtgeschwindigkeit is recommended, you might get traffic passing by at up to 120mph, maybe even more, depending on the cars driving by.
@Urmel331

Also Probably the reason why the trasnlation of the game calls the "Leitplanken" Guardrails and not vehicle restraint systems.

0:50 - noice save there, matt. the tool is a compactor. normally used for compacting soil or material to give the base strength for laying whatever on top (ie building foundations, ducting, drainage etc). Not to be confused with a vibrating plate, which, rather than compacting the material, levels it with a (you guessed it) plate that vibrates on the top layer for finishing/levelling. I'm not teaching you to suck eggs here as a civil engineer, but my dad used to work for one of the major brands of plant machinery back in the day and it really annoyed him (and it kinda triggers me, now) when people confuse the two. Two completely separate tools for two very different jobs.

Matt - for all the people noting that something is called one way or another in the US, please keep in mind that every state has their own department of transportation which is responsible for stuff in their state. Even tho there is technically a federal department of transportation - with a federal highway administration - in the United States, it is mostly an administrative body which provides funding to the state DoTs ( who, in turn, fund local infrastructure work!). I can't even guess as to how many times i had to literally jump out of the way of speeding cars because they didn't slow down going to the work zone and would rather hit a human then the on coming traffic. I only did it for 6-7 months so respect to you going doing that for as long as you had.

Always have to have your wits about you, no matter how many signs and cones and barriers you have up, there is always someone who fails to see them, and it only takes one person to clip you or hit you and you’re gone. Was the most stressful environment to work in, especially night shifts. On the plus side the TM boys were always a good laugh 😂and did a good job to make sure we were as safe as possible. @@SeedlingNL it's not a driving sim. Realistic collisions and individual physics for every item in the truck isn't important for this type of game. The point of this game is to simulate road maintenance, not driving. It would be a waste of time and resources for the devs to spend significant time/resources on that. The game also doesn't have a day/night cycle, lunch breaks, require you to drink water, go home to sleep at night, police system, refueling vehicles, etc. Just because it would be more "realistic" doesn't mean it's necessary.

I was on the i-5 south one time late at night and theres a spot where thered a far drop off the side of the highway, but no rails at all, and then a little bit later the rails come into place, and someone was tired or drunk who knows, he clapped the barrier like literally 10 feet from where theres no barrier, a second earlier and that man wouldve died. Thank you guard rails and thank you construction workers

The bit about littering extends to cigarette butts as well. Not only do they start forest fires in the summer, but the filters have lots of harmful chemicals in them that contaminate the environment and waterways. It's really not that hard to just use an ashtray or, if you don't like the smell, not smoke while driving. Great video as always, I could see this becoming a series!

My stepdad and I just came across the channel when he was trying to explain his job in highway maintenance (he gets call outs to car fires and RTA’s as well as pot holes and dead animals etc) and he’s convinced I’d be good at it 😂 anyway we found your channel ans now he’s OBSESSED 😂

In the Netherlands, the roadside "GET THE HELL OUT OF THAT LANE"-trucks are weighted with a suspension system and deformable barrier, some 200 meters before the worksite, just in case.

Growing up in California 30 years ago, there were PSAs on TV talking about and showing near-hit incidents of CalTrans employees (California Department of Transportation) working on the roads. The catchphrase was, "CalTrans: give 'em a brake." (Yes, brake.)

@Real Civil Engineer, I am one of those highway maintenance workers.... Traffic control (crash truck) is more fun than replacing the guardrail. We do most of the rail work by hand (post removal and replacement, rail cutting/removal and replacement... etc, etc) it sucks, even more in winter..

In the US, the metal ones are called guardrails. Then we have cable ones called simply cable barriers. & concrete walls are nicknamed Jersey Walls or K-rails.

Matt, this simulator is supposed to show Germany, so 140 is just as fast enough to flow with normal traffic on the middle lane. Normally these busses are designed to easily reach 180, like mine. But still, don’t even dare to drive on the left lane, or some dad in his station wagon will honk at you driving past you at 220, with his family in the car. Good gameplay though:)

I will never forget sweeping the fast lane of a 3 lane highway. I was maybe 18 at the time, working as a mechanic for a company that did fuel spill response. They were short handed so I got sent out. There was a crash truck behind us, with just the one lane closed. Cars whizzing by at 120 km/h 3 or 4 feet away on both sides was not a comfortable feeling. I think I have been moving over a lane for anyone on the side of the road since that day, before they made it a law to do so. (which so many people ignore)

In America those trucks (we call them crash attenuator trucks or simply crash trucks) have LED signs on them which point left/right if a lane is blocked or flash two lights if a shoulder is blocked, and a crash cushion on the back

Matt. A friend of mine used to work as part of Plymouth city council and was driving an arrow truck while others were trimming the trees. The truck did have the big bumper on the back. He was sitting in the cab when he heard a thump from behind, he got out walked to the back of the truck and found a man laying on the bumper. Apparently the guy was riding his cycle down the Parkway (A38) with his head down trying to be as fast as possible. Unfortunately he went straight into the back of the truck. 🤕 It would have been great if there was a video of it but there isn't. 😆👍

Those guard rails are being replaced on highways in Australia because they rebound cars back into the road. They're being replaced with a cable system that catches cars when they hit them, pretty smart.

Funnily enough, in australia at least, there are enforced speed reductions for roadworks, so if people dont slow down they'll get a fine. A lot of freeway and highway works speed signs have traffic cameras in them.

As someone who has spent some time paint road markings at night. Working on the road in traffic can be scary. I was setting up a barrier and a car swerved in front of the truck gaurding me and hit the cone that was in my hand, the guy was inches away from hitting me. Keeps you on your feet that's for sure

Old paramedic here. The guard rails have a few other properties. They are technically supposed to be overlapped with the free end facing away from traffic flow. That way when a car hits the barrier the free end don’t get driven into the car. Also the wavy cross section of the rail if for energy absorption. Part of the vehicle’s Kinetic energy goes to flattening out that shape.

I definitely would like to watch you go through the entire game ! Btw, you should pay attention to the speed limit signs, you were driving at 140 km/h on a highway that's limited to 110 km/h which would cost you a 90 to 130€ fine and removal of driving license !
