In this video, I explain the grammatical topic of the progressive tense in Dutch: “aan het + infinitief”. I’m covering when you should use it, how it works grammatically speaking and if and why it’s important for you to master it. I also give some tips for advanced A2-B1 students at the end.

I love the clarity of his speech. I could hardly call myself good at listening comprehension, but I can look away from the text and still understand what he is saying. Even so, I appreciate the text. It gives me a bit of extra support if I get confused on a word.

Dankje wel for one more lesson, Nout. Although this is a bit advanced for me, the little German I know plus English itself helped me get many of the cognates in the sentences. I think there's a similar structure in Welsh with 'yn+ verb in the infinitive' but only a fluent speaker could clarify if it's the same meaning (I'm just a learner). I just learned another most useful word: terwijl:-) P.S.: Your hair is even more beautiful at this length! Perfect.

BTW, should I learn this ? I am a beginner of learning dutch. (Ik ben Nederlands aan het leren.) Besides, is the meaning of terwijl means “while” ?

Nice explanation. I see that this is also used in the structure: Subject + aan het + infinitive + object... rather than subject + everything else + aan het + infinitive. Should we assume that both are correct? Eg: Jij bent op mijn zus aan het wachten; of Jij bent aan het wachten op mijn zus

So if I’m trying to tell someone “I am learning Dutch” (if they try and switch to English) would that be a good time to use this tense? Example: someone asks me (an obvious American) if I can speak Dutch would it be appropriate to answer “Nee, niet zo goed maar ik ben aan het leren.”
