Project Pulk & Snowshoe

As the prep for my winter backpacking continues..... I decide to take a pulk this year. Little less thought into packing this way as I carry much of my down garments and bags in my pack and put the heavier stuff in the pulk.
Got a new sled this year ... the Jet Sled Jr. A strong polyethylene sled that tracks like a dream. www.shappell.co...
Added some fiberglass poles from SkiPulk ...www.skipulk.com...
He has all the pulk candy!
Take a gander at my homemade skeg ...... what a help it is in tracking
.
Do some side by sides of my MSR Denali snowshoes and my old traditional snowshoes. Snowshoes are the "drive" of your pulk pulling.
Lots of the pulk in action on unbroken deep snow. on steep traverse and up and down hills.
Gus McCrae drops by.......
"Foggy Mountain Breakdown" picked by my good friend Jamey "Big Dog" Guy on banjo and me and some of our pals.
Kelsey Long and I pick "Baltimore Jonny" ..... a Ronnie McCoury tune. Ronnie is one of my mandolin heros!!!!
Thanks for always watching!
All secure in sector seven,
Shug

I just wanted to start with. HELLOOOOOOO from Montana!! I love your videos their fun and very informative. I started watching them when I was looking for cold weather hammock camping. I never heard of a pulk system until I watched this video. So I figured I would give it a go. Man I am so happy that I saw it. I always just packed my bag on my back. So I put one together with two 1/2 inch PVC pipes, 550 cord, a waist belt from an old pack I had laying around and a jet sled i picked up. I was heading out on a one night snow camp the same day. So I didn't have time to do the rutter. It worked great and made the snowshoe treck into camp great. Thank you so much for the great information!!

The MSR snowshoes really shine in the deep bush. When wearing traditional snowshoes I carefully pick my way through the bush, but with my MSR's I charge headlong forwards. Willows and sap,Inge need not be avoided, that front upsweep tramples them underfoot :)

I use a different type of harness system, mine is a shoulder yoke design. Goes on easily and comes off easily and can be done without disconnecting it from the sled. The yoke harness is a rigid bar that fits over and around the neck and front of the shoulders. This harness can take on some heavy loads and works great with game carts.

Sure beats my old piece of tin roof with twine strung through it that I used to pull firewood out of the AK woods. Also, @ mythic89 I moved from GA to AK with no prompting from a broad, but I met a NM dame there and now we're in Colorful CO. It hit the negatives tonight finally and that was a reason to party. just a thought... a skeg mounted to each outside edge might enable removing them just by slipping a hand down the inside instead of unloading, and on sides of hills if it leaned over one skeg should always be in the snow, that's the theory anyways. I like your pulk and that fin is probably working very good in powdery-snow. Is it easy to disassemble it? In case you get on a harder track the fin will probably make it more difficult to pull the pulk and therefore it would be great if it was easy to take away.

I pull a Burly Nomad Bicycle trailer...with a walking harness...and two telescoping aluminum poles with a waist harness a lot like the one you're using with your pulk...I put my light weight backpacking gear into it and can pull my load ..on most single track... that you can Bikepack on...this way of carrying a backpacking load puts about 75 percent of my load weight on two wheels...and for many hikes I like carrying my gear this way...the trailer also comes with two small skies that I can use in the Winter months... This is also a great trailer for carrying a bicycle touring gear load... instead of using Panniers....or Bikepacking bags.

@shugemery

+CHRIS TTRAM I never weigh it. Winter is really more bulk. And extra fuel, food and insulation. Maybe 30 pounds. A bit more or less. Just depends. Pulks just let you pack sloppy.

@ttram 8 лет назад
+CHRIS TTRAM -Thank you sir- I hadn't thought of the sinking effect of a loaded backpack, so learning from these vids is awesome- thanks for taking the time! Shoot, I didn;'t even know the difference between the old school(float benefit) size and shape, to the MSR's you wear...I was fascinated to see how you did with the declines, and you showed that- thanks. Here in Colorado, I have gone a few times with inclines, did Zimmerman Lake a few weekends ago--nobody in my party wants to camp, tho, I may feel empowered to give it a solo shot. I did get in touch with Grant at Skipulk.com and he said I would need to cut the width down to 3/4 in in order to fit in that underside channel; I hadn't told him when ordering that I would be using it with the Jet Sled Jr., that might have made a difference. Maybe that will be helpful for other viewers. Appreciate the video.

Great video as always. I just got a jet sled jr pulk today and I used Pmag's "dirtbag" design (pmags.com/build-a-gear-sled-the-dirt-bagger-way). I'm excited to use it. I noticed that it looks like your sled has holes drilled around the top for tying down gear. Did you drill them yourself? Any issues with durability over the years? The sled seems very tough, but I guess I'm just concerned that putting holes in it might weaken it. I hope you are able to answer my question and thanks again for all the entertaining and educational videos. Last week week I went on my first "successful" winter camping trip here in Pennsylvania. It was 15 degrees which is plenty cold for me! I'm looking forward to using my new pulk on my next winter trip! It was successful in part due to all that I learned from your videos, so thanks again! (The wristies were great!)
