Being able to send g-code commands to your 3d printer is necessary sometimes but it's not difficult. In this video, I show you how to connect your 3d printer to your computer and use Pronterface to send the g-code commands. I cover everything that you need to know to get started.

So boot up pronto. Then connect printer should I turn on printer ? Or just run thru usb power.I got it connected to my ender3v2 loaded a file was able to adjust a axis But it slowed printing speed down to a crawl I was using the displayed defaults.Also you vids are clear and concise

Hi. Pronterface should be able to connect with just usb power, or with the main power on. When you said it slowed down the print, were you printing from the sd card and just had it connected?

Thx for the video. I would have a question. I would like to control a stepper motor and 2 heat cartridges for an automated coating process. I connected them with ramps 1.4. Can i write a g-code on pronterface to control that process? I tried Marlin but it always showed an error message.

Hi. If all changes are gcode commands, it should work in pronterface.

Hey Rob, I noticed in another video when you used Pronterface for Bedleveling (G29) it came back with just the bed leveling mesh. But when I do this with my Ender 3 Pro, it responds with a great number of 'Printer busy...' statements, and the command rolls off the screen before the mesh appears. How did you turn that off? Or do I just need to download a later version of Pronterface?

Hi. Are any of the commands working or are they all saying printer busy? Have you tried to restart your computer?

@@3DPrintscape all the commands work, if just spams echo:printer busy about 100 times before returning the bed level mesh output. I dropped a screenshot as Quill1988 on the discord site. It’s. not broken, just annoying and I noticed in your video you weren’t getting it.

hi thanks for that video it was a great help im a beginner, so i have my connection from pronterface on my pc and i can control my ender3 pro from it. so now i want to use cura to print what is the procedure, thanks in advance. ian

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I would recommend against trying to do that. If the computer goes to sleep, reboots for updates or anything like that you will loose your print. If you want to control the printer from your computer, i would recommend setting up Octopi on a raspberry pi or something similar.

Okay Device manager didn't work for me so I wen to ponter verse. small issue is I have windows 11 and I tried getting desktop version then I went to ponterface. I did not get the option to for COMM and I played with the rate system it still couldn't detect it. I got a little lost when you talked about the marlin website. I don't know what it is right now. I am gonna have to take a break figuring this out.

Hi. In theory you would be able to if you can connect to it through RDP or something but i think you will have a lot of issues. If you want to connect remotely, i would go with octopi.

Hi. If it uses a USB to serial connection and recognizes g code commands it should work.

A very helpful video. Appreciated. I have an odd error that I just cannot figure out. When loading files for USB printing I'll get a memory error "cannot load memory into array". doesn't matter the size but usually happens with larger files. I I have one that is 40+MB and 733 lines. Always fails loading around line 400. Sometimes sooner and other times later. SD card printing is not an option. Must be USB. Long story short this happens on any PC (win 10 and win 11) so it is NOT the computer or OS. This is something with pronterface itself. Appears that while loading the file it just runs out of its reserved memory but it's not consistent. Any ideas on how to fix this? Any settings I can look at that are specific to pronterface or ways to increase the amount of memory it has allocated?

Hi. I havent seen this issue before. What are the specs on your computer? Did you try rebooting or another computer?

@@3DPrintscape The win 10 is an older HP. T9300 CPU and 8GB RAM. The newer one is Win 11 and I5 with 16GB RAM. The only applications that give any form of memory allocation issue is pronterface. The printer controller has an issue with the SD card reader so USB printing is the only option. I am no stranger to computer errors and troubleshooting but this one stumps me and why I am convinced it's a pronterface issue. I suspect it might be related to loading the file while it updates the preview and I'm trying to find a setting for that. Not sure on the terminology though so it'll be trial and error I suspect. I know it's also not limited to large gcode files. It happens with 1.5Mb files and a 70MB file. It's always past the point where 50% of the file loads though. Rebooting helps some times but not always. Typically I find the best thing is to disconnect from pronterface, unplug the USB cable, power off the printer, shutdown (not restart) the computer, then restart the computer, power on the printer, start pronterface, connect the USB then connect to the printer and load the file. That resolves it more often than not but ONLY if I follow that exact process. Sometimes I'll have to repeat 5 or 6 times before the file will fully load.

@@Enjoymentboy Gotcha, i havent seen this before. I think its based on java, which will cap the memory based on how much the commuter has. That said, i havent actually tired it with a computer that has less than 32gb memory, i dont see why one with 16 wouldn't work though.

Hey man, everything worked, except my printer won't connect through pronterface for some reason, it's an ender 3 s1, and I tried every baud rate, I even had the printer plugged in with a usb connected to my computer, what do I do?

Hi. Have you tried any other usb cable? Many of them are meant for charging only and wont carry data.

Hi. I dont send the prints from pronterface so im not sure what the process looks like. Assuming you used a slicer to make the gcode file, sending it should start the print.

Hi, I am using Pronterface to check for error messages. The error is random and may occur after several hours. How do I send the error messages to a log file so I can read them later. There seems to be an option in the menu but I am not sure of how the path should be written and could not get it to work.

Hi. The port is auto assigned. I dont think you can try to assign it to a specific port number every time.

downloaded the FTDI driver but Pronterface still sees no ports. Device manager does not show ports as in video, when I plug in printer a USB device pops up but not in any ports tab. I can see "GENERICSTM32F103RC FS MODE" under USB devices. I was told to try another cable, that this one may not handle data, but if it shows the board isn;t that proof that it sends data? I'm getting so frustrated trying to add BLTouch

Hi. Honestly, i would start with swapping out the cable. I had a similar issue and it ended up being the cable. Just make sure you get one that is meant for data transfer.

@@heddywood Try downloading and installing the drivers i cover in the video, the link to them is in the video description. If that doesn't work, something like AV/Windows Firewall could be blocking the connection.

Hi. I havent seen that before. Can you try to launch it as admin or reboot your computer then try that again.

Hi. I have an Ender III. I have it plugged into my computer. I know the computer has sensed it's plugged in because it made the familiar ding with a new device being plugged in. However, even though I followed your instructions and opened the device manager to check the USB Serial port, my computer isn't recognizing my printer and thus it is not showing up in ponterface. I tried downloading, exporting, extracting, and installing the FTDI driver, that did not solve it. I unplugged the device from my computer and plugged it back in. I restarted my computer. I tried searching automatically and then manually for the driver for the port. No luck. Can you help?

Hi. Try to use a different USB cable. Many of them are only meant for charging, not data.

@@williamlovell7413 If you have a Rasberry Pi with OctoPrint, you could try to connect it to that. That will tell you if its an issue with the cord/printer or the computer/driver.

I also say use a different cable. That as well as using a specific usb port on my laptop solved the issue for me.

I am not able to make perfect circle. Printer is drawing 2 side parallel lines. how to solve this? I am using pen for calibration. During rectangle, square or triangle I am getting perfect shape with exact dimensions.

Hi. Honestly i have never used that printer so im not sure. That said, i looked it up and it appears to be using klipper. You should be able to do anything in the klipper web interface that you could do in pronterface.

Hi! I m a Mechatronics Engineer. I m working on a 3d printer. I used the same *Pronterface* for 3d printing. When I upload the gcode file to print. After uploading when I gave *Print* command the printer doesn't print. The stepper motors works but while temperature command of hotend and bed the software gives an error *Write Timeout*. How to solve this error? What's the point due to which this problem arrises?

@@talhazafar7159 Ok, i have never seen this before. It may be worth checking computer memory/disk to make sure its not running out of space. If that looks ok, look at the event logs around that time to see if it give you more info on the error.

Hi. There isnt one that im aware of because it needs a physical connection to the printer. You may need to setup Octoprint or something similar.

Hi. Are you sure its the right com port? Also, did you try rebooting? I have seen ports get locked or have random issues get fixed by rebooting. If that doesnt work, try a different cable.

Hi. If your printer is connected to the computer and cura has the connection to it, ya it should do the same.

I had everything setup properly and then I accidentally moved the usb cord in the middle of a print, and long story short I ended up making the screen go completely blank. Anyone have any experience with this?

Hi. Did the printer go back to normal after you restarted it? Also, I wouldn't recommend printing from a Windows computer. If a task locks up or the computer restarts for updates you will lose the print.

@@3DPrintscape So what happened is it was heating up, and getting ready to start, and then I accidentally moved the cable causing an error on the computer. I tried plugging the cable back in, hoping that I would be able to resume what it was doing, but when the print didnt start I just hit stop. When I realized that hitting "off" was not working and the printer was still set to the previous heat settings, I tried turning it off manually. When I turned it back on everything was blank and has been the same ever since. I even tried deleting everything on the sd card that was in the printer and running it without an sd card but this did not work. Posting all these details just incase someone else has had this exact issue, I hope to be able to dedicate more time to this issue later.

@@josuehernandez4716 Gotcha, It may be worth trying to update the firmware. Its possible that something got corrupted when the cable got disconnected.

@@3DPrintscape Yes, it was after launch. "pronterface-windows-x64_3.8-2.0.0rc8.zip" on Pronterface's github page only had a single file "pronterface.exe", which gave above mentioned error after launch. There were no supporting files. I got "Printrun-win-18Nov2017.zip" which is working fine😀. Thank you!!!!!

Hi. Ive seen this when connecting to the wrong device or something already locking the connection. Rebooting the computer fixes it most of the time.

Hi. If your wanting to do it in pronterface, i think you will have to send the gcode command for it. Try M112.

@@GaryScottPhotographer Honestly, i wouldnt run the print at all through printerface, or anything in windows. I just use it for troubleshooting and testing. The issue is that if the app freezes, or your computer reboots, you will lose the print.

Hi. If you are getting access denied, you have the wrong device selected or something already has a lock on it. If your sure you are choosing the right device, try to restart your computer.

Hi. Make sure your using a cable meant for data and try to reboot.

Hi. The standard connection is serial over USB, so with most boards, the answer is no. Im not sure about the boards that have the wifi module built in though (i just havent tried).

Hi. It will also send some power over the USB cable, its enough to power the screen but not the heaters or anything like that.

Well that confirms my suspicions pronterface is rubbish... I had so many problems with this pos I now use repetier host which impv is miles better and connects no problem does all this and more and is also a decent slicer .. Plus its all free ..
