Your self-plugging segue was much better than previous videos, where they felt shoe-horned in. This one flowed nicely, both promoting your book and validating your skill and experience. Also, you missed your calling as a Broadway stage dancer. But then, this may have been for the best. :) Fantastic axe. the dappled paint on the axe head was beautiful, and the Celtic knot pattern down the handle was nothing short of epic.
I recently got my first gig making props. Two grails for a production of Spamalot, one normal size, the other huuuge sized. I 3d printed both of them and totally regret not making the large one out of foam, since it took 30 hours to print! Thanks for all the great prop making vids to teach us newbies some skills! I just rotocasted some glowing unicorn horns from what I learned watching your channel.
That hot knife work was almost as bad as my xacto knife work I did on a foam plaque I carved a few years ago. Finally got the feeling back in my hands. Nice work as always. Now, get back to your cosplay build before you run out of time!
A friend and I are building our first foam weapons at the moment! I'm building Stripes I (a stylised katana) from Panty and Stocking and he's building Entou Jyuu (a revolver and a glock/pistol thing) from Katanagatari. We had some issues with the sword in that we couldn't get the EVA foam completely smooth even after heat sealing, and the plastidip we used as a base created tiny bubbles all the way along no matter what we did. Sort of fixed it by layering up gesso over top and sanding that smooth, but haven't tried painting it again yet. The guns are coming along well though :) Using a layer of EVA foam in the centre then building up the detailing with craft foam. Made the trigger, guard, and the bit you pull back out of balsa. We're using your Destiny gun as a 'how to' since we can't afford Foamsmith 2 (AUD is terrible)
I recently saw that Tested vid! :D Super cool that you got to make the axe, very proud of how your channel and all the other production studios are comming together now to make all these sweet props. Keep up the good work, the axe looks stunning!
Absolutely love what you do, keep it up! Saving up for the hard copy of Foamsmith 1 and 2. And I'm almost done making my foam Hunter's Knife from Destiny. I think it's awesome that I was able to get that template from you for no charge. I'll have to post a few photos on my Instagram and tag you guys so you can check it out. I'm a huge fan and can't wait to see the completed mechanist costume!
Hi Bill! Awesome video! I am just wondering why you didn't use your laser cutter to etch in the patterns into the foam before gluing them on, would have saved some time. Also, the pommel on this axe was very nice too.
Great axe, Bill! Really cool seeimg your work at E3. Currently Im working on an Artorias cosplay from Dark Souls for the upcoming Renaissance Faire here in Michigan. :)
Hmm, do you think you could show a video of how to create a prop weathered fire axe? I'm writing a script for a horror movie and the killer uses a fire axe primarily as his weapon, and to do some gory shots I need a decent prop, and your work is great and I'd love to see how to do create it ^.^
heya, fantastic prop, the wood carved handle is amazing. Would you have a finish that would be used for a prop that would be kept in a cold, slightly wet shed? my shop is in such a place and its great fun keeping my tools/machines rust free. I would like to begin foamsmithing and would love to have my creations all around me when working. thanks a million for reading this, hope you're having a great day :)
+Punished Props I meant that i was worried aboitnwater getting under latex/laquer and bubbling the finish or make it peal. i know that latex does that by itself over time, and that in woodwork finishes for outdoor projects yellow/grey/bubble/peal outdoors. Also would the integrety of the foam degrade in a wet environment. I only mentioned the rust bit to give an indication of moisture levels in the shed, sorry for the confusion :)
I'm in the planning stage for a Scotsman's Skullcutter (TF2). This video came at JUST THE RIGHT TIME! Did you get the axe back, or is it the property of the Ubisoft?
Hi Bill! Fantastic work with the axe :D I was wondering, since you're working with latex, how do you clean your airbrush (the big one with the can/tin under it)? :)
i srsly love your videos... i have made a few how to, for larp weapons my self, but nothing in your quality ^^ And loving the tips for painting techniques.. One question though, why brush on the first layer of latex ? and then spray.. why not just spray the entire thing ?
I'm commenting on this video but referencing back to your helmet video. I am creating a cosplay of the assassin specialist, Spectre, from COD: Black Ops 3. I watched your video but it is just more difficult to understand it when coming from a differnet helmet so I was wondering if I could share a picture of the helmet sculpt I am going for and get your advice on it. I'm super excited for this cosplay, I just am a little new to it and need some help and It's so much easier for me to get it when it's direct. Please reply and tell me if you would be able to help.
Do you think foam would work well for making armor pieces for lets say 6 inch action figures? Id love to get your book if it helps me with the figures i make.
firstly cool dancing :) secondly I am watching this vid cause I am making the lord saladin armour but I don't have any industrial saws so I was wondering how I would I cut a clean cut through that much foam?
Hi. I'm new to foam smithing. In some of the vidoes I've seen they use a product called kwik seal to help smooth seams in foam builds. I'm from Australia. Is there an Australian equivalent for this product. The shippibg costs from America are crippling - $20 - 30 for a 6.00 tube. Thank you.
Unfortunately we aren't familiar with products outside the US. I will say though that Kwik Seal is basically a silicone caulk used in housing projects. You may be able to find something similar in a hardware store.
That's a good question! Our buddy Jakface did the amazing cartoon characters of us. Maybe we'll comission her to update them :) facebook.com/jakfaceart
I've noticed that the foam you use is smooth on both sides, and it looks a lot denser than the foam I use now. Does anyone know what it's called (like a brand or something)'and where I can get it from?
The link in the description shows you that he uses those EVA foam mats that piece together like a jigsaw puzzle. They have one smooth side and one textured side. In another video he gets rid of the texture by cutting it off with his band saw (I think it's in the Destiny knife or gun build), so I assume that's what he does to these pieces as well.
the only thing that will be an issue is the sander you used for the majority of the foam, is there anyway to substitute that out for something that is just as if not a little less effective?
Punished Props if I took the necessary time and amount of time could it be cleaner than usual? I don't mind taking the extra time as long as it's effective
highly disappointed knowing blizzard had weapons forged from raw metals. ubisoft should step up with all the hype being put in this game. don't get me wrong this guy is talented just feel like ubisoft went the cheap route
