In spring 2020 the German sailor Sebastian Kummer delivered a brand new Lagoon 46 from Les Sables-d´Olonne, France, to Turkey. In Göcek, Turkey, he just wanted to change the boat and sail directly with his former catamaran, a Lagoon 450, to Croatia. In this video he is talking about the pros and cons of the two catamarans. And about his incredible trip in times of Covid. On the way to Turkey his crew left the boat on Mallorca. Kummer had to sail the Lagoon 46 singlehanded to the east of the Med.
In Germany and Austria Kummer, a professor at the university of economy in Vienna, became famous as the "covid sailor". His odyssey lasted 90 days because he wasn't allowed to enter any country.

By far the best 460 AND 450 video I have seen yet. A realistic view, and not a sales person point of view. Thanks!

Well the lagoon 450 also has a defect with the bulkheads and need to be engineered better.

Only if you purposely and recklessly over tighten your mast like those numb nuts on Parlay did. There is a RU-vid video of them doing it on their channel.

This I didn’t know when the video was done. But I also think that the problem can be solved but it needs some work.

Hey Sebastian, thanks for sharing your story and these details. Very helpful indeed. Two questions that I have for the Lagoon 450 and/or 46 Where would you recommend installing a portable diving compressor (approx 59kgs which would also fit into the boot of a normal car?) And the other one is about your experience, if you have had any, with cracked bulkheads, which has become an issue for many Lagoon owners in recent years. Many thanks in advance :) G.

@sebastiankummer1741 Год назад
Sorry it’s not my account but of Jen’s, so I have seen only now by accident, the installation of a dive compressor is easier in the 450. Most probably it should be done on port side in the front (we’re you see the fenders in the video). I had no experience with the bulk head problems at the 450. It was not known in 2018 when I sold the 450. The new one didn’t have problems but was only sailed in moderate conditions

@@sebastiankummer1741 Thank you for your insights. Yes the bulk head problems did only really come to light in the last 2ish years, why I was curious if you noticed anything back in the day.

English with a German accent is always entertaining; it always sounds upbeat and happy yet abit curious. "It was very French" haha

Very interesting comparison. The 46 does look nice in the brochure, and is one of the possibilities we are considering. Good thing you were lucky with the fish. I doubt you provisioned food for 90 days when you left, we were wondering how you handled the food situation. I assume the water maker was installed.
@sailingdilly-dally1874
@sailingdilly-dally1874 3 года назад
Actually Sebastian hadn't expected to sail alone. He started with crew that's why he had lots of food on board. And he was very lucky in fishing. But of course he ran out of fresh food. While he was hiding in some bays, Turkish friends helped him out and brought stuff to his boat. Water was a big issue because there was no water maker on board. He tried to safe as much water as possible and collected rain water. Another issue was power. He had to run the engines to charge the batteries, because there was also no solar on board yet. Luckily friends also delivered some diesel. :)

@@sailingdilly-dally1874 Wow. The lack of a water maker is a big one, and the solar as well. Kayla and I are wanting both from the start when we buy, as we intend to cruise for at least a decade. At least he had the help of friends! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FnfXoVCUAS4.html

What about under sail comparison?
@sebastiankummer3008
@sebastiankummer3008 3 года назад
It´s not so easy to compare. Definitly the 46 is easier to sail due to elf tacking Jib and the perfect (electric) traveler for the main sail. But the Lagoon 450 sails a bit faster. Maybe a close hauled in winds more than 15 Knots the 46 sails a bit faster and or on a better angle.
@sebastiankummer3008
@sebastiankummer3008 3 года назад
The main difference ist the Genua on 450 and self tacking JIB on 46. They sail more or less similar, maybe slightly better especially in strong winds the 450
@sebastiankummer1741
@sebastiankummer1741 Год назад
I think upwind the 46 sails slightly better because of the jib. Downwind both sail good and it depends very much on sail (Spinnacker, Gennaker, Winacker oder Parasailor)

I liked this video very much, its very nice :) All jokes aside, very informational. im curious was your 450 a S model or F? One of the things i dont like about the L46 is its only available as a F type....and i wouldnt be interested in buying it until they offer a S version.

Both Lagoon 450 were F. Of course the 450 S is quite different to the 46 fly bridge.
