Our first home was 1200 sq ft with one bathroom. In 1991 we had our current home built. It is 1500 sq ft with two bathrooms. I am so grateful to have two bathrooms! It is especially nice when we have extended family staying. Most of my furniture is second hand or made by my dad. I don’t follow style trends, but made my home pretty with what I have within our budget. We have been blessed to live debt free our whole 38 yrs of marriage.

I grew up in small homes. My husband and myself purchased our first home with 1000 sqft. When our children became teenagers for our sanity we did upgrade to a 1700 sqft home. While the size is nice, I find myself overwhelmed with cleaning and maintaining it and the HVAC bills are quite a bit higher. We are looking forward to growing old together and downsizing in the near future.

Love a smaller home, easier to maintain, clean and save on electricity as you don’t have all that space to cool and heat🤗🤗

Our home is also small, around 900 sf. 3 small bedrooms, No basement, 1 bathroom. But we hAve a very nice covered patio that we can use for almost 3 seasons, and a very big yard. I prefer small home living over large homes. So east to clean, keep tidy and keep organized. Bills are low, easy to heat in winter and cool in the summer. Taxes are low, and so easy to furnish too in a smaller space. We love our little home.

A big yard does really help. Yes to all of that!

I think a lot depends on a house is laid out. Your 950 foot home is pretty open. It is also great that you have a basement for your food storage, etc. where would you have what you have/store in your basement if you didn't have a basement?
@DaveeKilian
@DaveeKilian 2 месяца назад
I would be more conservative on how I use decor and function. The area by my piano is quite open, however I could put food shelves up there or store other items more efficiently in my hallway storage.

Living in a small home is a challenge however it can be done. Economy is terrible. large home means large expenses as long as you can provide a roof over food on the table stability and love it doesn’t matter how big the home is. It’s the fact they have a home.

Our home is 1128 square foot 2 bathrooms. It is a townhouse. Ours is small compared to many others know. But I like our place. I agree less for me to clean. Truly we have just what we need and it is affordable. We bought it a little less that 5 years ago. So probably 4 years ago before the market went crazy. Thanks for sharing . I think today the world sends the message you have to have a bigger house. You don't. Small can work.

You nailed it. I raised my kids in a tiny home too. As you listed, there are many pros, and very few cons. The bathroom situation is definitely a con as kids age. And girls aren't the only ones who spend a lot of time in front of the mirror!😆

Excellent video. We raised 3 kids and ran a remodeling company from our 900 square foot house. That was a little too tight, as our bed was in the home office. Now the kids are grown, we have enough space to even have a guest room. Luxury! But I chuckled at your statement that interest rates are sky high. It's a matter of perspective. When we bought our house in 1978, interest was around 20%. Seriously. We bought it on land contract from a friend, at a bargain rate of 15%. We refinanced a few times as rates dropped over the years. But it was still cheaper than paying rent, and the house value has more than 10x'd. So yes, buying a small home is a good economic move!

Please don’t forget that the ratio of the average income:home price back then was 1:2 maybe 1:2.5 and sometimes 1:1. Today it’s 1:8 or 1:9-10 in most areas. It’s not a fair comparison.
@laurieg6416

@@missylearned9821 I was only comparing interest rates. I do understand that it's incredibly difficult to afford buying in the current economy

We have lived in our home for 35 years. We raised all our kids here. It’s a ranch style home with a full basement. Yes, we have the basement but when we were raising our kids the basement was unlivable. It was more like a storage room. So essentially we raised 4 kids in 1050 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 1 bath. Our house is paid for now and we are empty nesters. The basement is finished now so we have a 5 bedroom 2 bath house. We feel so blessed to have it with the market the way it is!

That is rather similar to us right now. We do hope to get our basement finished, which would add another 500 square foot or so.

My husband and I live in a 1050 square ft town home with 2 bed , small patio, 1.5 bath and attached single car garage. I’m pregnant with my second boy and hope to have 3 kids total one day. I love my home most days but sometimes I crave a more open kitchen (ours is a small galley ) , a private yard, and a third bedroom. But I’m grateful to not have the burden of maintenance of those things while I’m in the season of motherhood of littles. Our HOA has really pretty lawn areas where we play with neighbor kids and ride bikes. We are in San Diego and have accepted that we are officially priced out of ever upgrading to something larger or even detached. We hope to make this work for our growing family and pay it off ASAP so we can live fully outside these four walls with our kids. Thanks to companies like Ikea, we know we can engineer our home to sleep a lot of people comfortably as well as store the thing we need in a aesthetically pleasing way for low cost.

Best wishes on your pregnancy. That is nice that you have outdoor spaces to be in that are lovely. I don't do much Ikea shopping as our closest one is 5 hours away, however I have seen how well there items can be used.

Our first home purchase was a 3bed/2bath 1100 sq foot with a large backyard. We moved into a 2000 sq ft 4 bed/2bath with a small yard and pool. The cleaning, costs, and maintenance of this larger home are overwhelming for me and I miss my smaller home 😢. I am pregnant with my fourth and look forward to going back to something smaller!

We have 2 bathrooms but only use one now that kids are grown, and didn't use it that much when they lived here. I often wish we were still living in our older home of 750 Sq.foot. I miss it. We are looking to downsize when the time is right.

We raised (and homeschooled) our 4 kids in a 960 sq ft home. It was great for bonding like you said, and I look back on those days with great fondness. It also made our kids "outdoorsy", since that's where all the wide open spaces were. It also made me extremely creative in terms of use-of-space, and helped to move me step.by step towards living more minimally, as I do now in retirement. All the money we saved in housing expenses we were able to save toward things like vacations, college expenses, retirement, etc. I would do it again for sure.

I love how content you are! We have 3 teens in a 2800 square foot, 5 bedroom, 3 full bathroom house(and where we are, that's on the somewhat "smaller" side. It's insane around here). While it is wonderful that we have so much space, I'm SO overwhelmed with the cleaning, and I'm always worried about the electric bill. Also, we just moved in 9 months ago, and all of the windows are going to need to be replaced at some point. That definitely weighs heavily on us. Sometimes it's all too much.

@@DaveeKilian I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining at all! God has given us this space after relocating our family 12 hours from home, renting for 2 years, and going through some tough stuff. I'm.so grateful for everything I have, and I'm in awe every single day at the space we have, and our community. I can be a worry wart sometimes! I just love how content and calm you seem to be about everything. It's all in the Lord's hands anyway. God bless. ❤️

I grew up in a 2 bedroom 1 bath with 4 other sisters. My grandfather turned the attic into a larger room and 3 sisters lived up there. I got married and started in a mobile home and now have a small split foyer and raised 3 children here. I have always lived small and wouldn’t do it any other way! I totaling agree with your pro’s and cons! Thank you for your video! Enjoy your summer!

Great list of pros & con's. I myself was raised in a 2 bed/1 bath home. My mom, myself & 2 siblings, they were young teens when i was born, my parents divorced when I was 4. We had A very small side porch that we closed in & my brother, the oldest, made that his room and i was in the room with my mom. I also lived half the time with my grandparents because mom was single & worked full time. It was my grandparents, my aunt & uncle and 3 cousins.. and myself pretty often. Their home was 3 bedroom/1 bath.. but they made it work! From day one on my on I've always had A smaller home and it always worked. I would love an older home with big rooms but it don't have to have lots of rooms! I'd love the big rooms just to decorate & not feel cluttered, but I'd probably fill it up😄 I do like small home living, i love the coziness of it. I guess its what you're used to or like 🤷‍♀️ Thanks for sharing your pros & con's with us!😊
