currently using Percy Nobleman wooden comb and Kent brush found both to be pretty good thus far the wooden comb had relatively good tooth spacing the big thing for me is no static issues which is why I've steered clear of plastic never knew carbon fibre was even a thing for combs got plenty of Carbon on my bike though
I have the Kent Comb, Ox horn, Chicago comb. I use the Chicago comb in the shower daily and I usually use my ox horn for beard oil application. I also notice how the ox horn comb holds the smell of my beard oil like you mentioned in the video. I've had the Kent comb forever and I usually take it in my travel bag when I go on vacation. I like the Chicago combs the best.
I’ve only really used the wooden ones and my beard is medium length or maybe you’d say reasonably short when trimmed. But I bought that handled carbon fibre one after this video so thanks for the recommendation.
Waiting on my Chicago Comb order today. Got the model 7 and 8. I’ve learning a lot from your videos. Recently started to get into a good routine with the proper tools. Thanks!
I use a wide tooth comb and most days that’s good enough for volume. Half the time I follow up with the round brush. If I straighten my beard, then I use the Kent comb
So far, 2 to 3 years in. Wood is good start short to med. Cell only use for mustache. Horn i used shortly at med length. Chicago/carbon #8 morning, night, and shower. No1 touch ups throughout the day
great video Dan!!! Just like you I held out for a long time getting the Chicago comb. It was only after a doc nick stream that you both highly recommended the #8 that i was willing to give it a go and added it to an octane order i believe. Now the # 8 is the only one i use.
Yes, EDC Bossman double sided for at work and on the go, perfect size for front pocket next to minimalist wallet. Chicago #8, one in shower, one at bathroom sink and one more on dresser. #7 bathroom. Boreshair brush on dresser for early am straightening.
I use the Chicago combs on my beard and head hair. I have a medium length beard and use the #8 on my beard, the #1 on my mustache, and the #6 on my head hair, also used the #6 on my beard when it was shorter. These are hands down the best grooming tools I have ever owned.
I could not believe that a comb could make that big of a difference until I got a Chicago comb #8. It's amazing and it's my go to comb hands down. I also use a Chicago Pet Comb in the shower. It does a great job too. The other comb I use that you didn't mention is the Chicago Comb # 6. I use it as a finishing touch on the outer layer of my beard to smooth out any wide teeth marks left by the #8.
Lost my little wooden comb last weekend. Been going nuts looking for it. Was about to buy a new one today. Actually used my metal comb this morning. 😆…and the only 2 combs you say are trash are the ones I’ve been using. This is a sign for me to order up a Chicago Comb!
Dan, I am SO glad that you showed us carbon fiber combs. They are so amazing and by far the best tool I have used. Like you I have numerous number 8 combs so I always have one close. I started with Kent combs and they were fine, but the Chicago Combs are just next level. I also really enjoy the number 7, and the number 2 on my mustache. I also have a small bathroom and small sink, I knock these combs off fairly often, and I have never had a single one break.
I like this, and I’d like to see more, with some detail. Specifically, more detail on which tooth widths (Fine, Coarse, Wide, Detangling…) and lengths are best for what beard characteristics (Length, Density, Straight or Curly…). Unfortunately, it seems there are no standards for widths, and combs with different teeth are commonly referred to as fine and wide although the teeth are really fine and coarse. This can make it difficult to decide which width you need. Tension is good for grooming, but too much can pull hairs and sometimes no tension may be needed. Your comments about wood are good, but there are combs made with attention to the qualities (grain, strength, etc.) of the wood used, that overcome some of your criticisms. Bamboo, a grass, also has different qualities than wood and I think should get some attention. Kudos to Chicago Comb - I’ve read of cheap Carbon Fiber combs that break easily.
I like my Viking Revolution two sided wooden comb. I don't style with a comb though, I use a detangler brush for that with the blow dryer. The wood comb fits good in my pocket and the narrow teeth work best for the stash while the wider teeth go smoothly through the beard. I might check out a carbon fiber comb though. Sounds good.
I did use Chicago combs for my head hair and my beard. A seriously game changing even for the head hair. I can easily pass under my hair and it's actually a good feel like a massage. 🌹
Absolutely love the #7 & #8 Chicago combs! My beard is getting closer to 8" & I had to transition from the same ox horn comb w/handle. I'm still having trouble with tension though. I tried the Chicago pet comb & it works surprisingly well but I use it more for a shower comb now. Watching your videos has truly helped me through my bearded journey. Thank you, sir.
I like Cremo's wood beard comb a lot works for me no issues yet and probably smells like everything lol lot of scents on it. I have one Chicago comb! I like it too.
I have an Bahawat ox horn comb (non handled). I find it great for detangling but it doesn't provide any tension for styling. I'd like to find a nice styling comb, I will have to see what Chicago offers.
Absolutely love the Chicago 7 comb. One of my go to’s. But my absolute new favorite is the pick from Live Bearded. Highly underrated and I highly recommend it
Wow, this video really helped me a lot! I've been looking around the market for some new combs, and will take the information from this video into strong consideration.
Just received my ChicagoPet Comb..... Come-on Dan where has this GEM been it Loves My Natural 9in, Just Put My #8 in My Car... Thanks Dan PS I stopped using balm and butter I’m just using oil twice a day absolutely works great with my new pet comb....
Chicago combs 7 & 8 are my go-to's. I also got the oxhorn/buffalo handled combs that I'll use at the end of my routine. I can do Woden combs I just feel like my beard doesn't style the way I want it too. Kent combs was as bad as experience for me as when a lady at Sport Clips put cremo beard balm in my beard. Caused me pain, breakage was insane, that's when I started using oxhorn combs and I lived happily ever after. Great video!
My go to is the Ox horn wooden handle comb. I have the Chicago Pet comb as it gives me two options. I have thrown away my wooden brushes as they did get warped and mold.
1:30 I had one of those two if I remember one of the teeth broke on it and I did have the one with the skinny skinny teeth on one side and I lost it and I did not cry over it I just wanted to say that before I did not still remember it
I use the wooden handle comb when I first get out of the shower to get rid of any tangles then style with the ox horn comb. I know it was a long time ago but there is a video where you're using one of the wooden cheap combs for your night time routine. Of course you beard was much shorter and you had basically just started your videos.. We all live and learn., and that must have been one of your lessons.
I could never gel with the wood combs either. I used to use a similar wide tooth comb from the big box store, and I had a "Flat Top" comb I used for styling. They worked well, but the Chicago #8 does the job of both, and is much higher quality. I saw a thread on the Facebook group, where there isn't anything special about the Chicago combs... That is true, but there is just something about them. They are well made, and just do what they're supposed to do. They also just feel nice in hand... I had a metal comb for a time, but again could never gel with it either... I have the Chicago #2 for my Mustache, the #6 is my Wife's, the #7 for volume, #8 is my daily driver, and the Pet Comb in the shower...
@@DanCBearded I'm going to amend what I said earlier... I had been just using the #8 to "Fluff" my beard after finishing styling, and thinking it was doing just fine, well... The #7 blows that thing away... It's subtle, and nobody else would probably notice, but I feel like it's a huge difference...
I use a Kent comb at night to help spread the butter. I use the handled Buffalo horned comb you have in this video for combing out my beard right after I shower, and then to spread the oil. And in the shower I have the "Pet comb" from Chicago. Love em all 😊 That said, what's wrong with metal combs?? Never owned one, but I'm just wondering. If they're precision cut and have no snags or imperfections, what's the problem?
I have made the exact same comb journey! Lol!! Wood, to Kent, to that exact same handled Buffalo horn comb because of your video a few years ago Now I only use my carbon fiber Chicago combs, for over a year now. My favorites are #6, #8 and the pet comb. All fantastic and the best quality combs I have ever tried hands down! 💯👊🤘
I've been using wooden combs since the beginning. I have both a handled comb, and the typical, two sided, beard comb. I use the handled comb for my initial comb through and to spread my oil. I use the two sided to spread my butter. I have had no problems with either one thus far. However, the Chicago Combs carbon fiber models 2, 6 and 8 combs are on my want list.
I have a less dense, naturally fine beard so I prefer close together teeth. The part of my Kent comb with the fine teeth that most of you would use just on your mustache, I actually use through my entire beard just to style it and get everything going in the right direction. I have a two-sided wooden comb I use to basically distribute oil and detangle my hair, and then I use a boar bristle brush to really distribute and style. And if my beard still isn't looking particularly the way I want, I use the fine tooth side of my Kent comb and that's basically my quintessential styling comb.
Just got my Chicago #8 in the mail. So far I like it. Throwing out my Walmart wood one. I had no idea I was using the wrong comb for years. Hopefully it will help with split ends and pulling? Just found your channel last week. Really hoping with all your advice, my beard will grow beyond the 6” mark. Thanks sir.
I have been using a detangler comb almost exclusively since graduating away from athose wooden combs as my beard got longer. My beard hair is course and curly and the Tortoise Shower Detangler Comb from Sally's (for .99) is the best way I know to avoid breakage and lots of snarling. I keep one in the shower and use one after oiling my beard. They are sturdy, easy to keep clean, do not take on aromas, and I have not noticed static issues I may try the Chicago #8 after watching this, but hesitate to spend the money without knowing if it works with my kind of beard.
The Kent combs I have used had problems with the teeth warping. I had a mustache one that I used with mustache wax and it bent the teeth. Carbon fiber combs are amazing. Thanks for the video Dan!
Just a heads up, and it makes total sense, but my beardbrand comb warped from using with my blow dryer over time. Once I noticed it, it made total sense and it should not have surprised me lol.
wonderful video Dan! I have Kent brand combs, especially the small one for mustache and it works well for that area, apart from before I used the typical ones with boar spikes.... but the beast is growing! and today I received my first Chicago Nº8 comb and my god! What a spectacular comb, after just one day with it I fell in love, I have ordered a couple more now!
I just ordered my Chicago comb number eight from Amazon should be getting it Wednesday I’m looking forward to using it on my eight month natural beard Thanks
For me it’s Chicago combs all the way. I still like Kent combs, but like you said it’s just a mustache comb now. Thank you, I enjoy getting real life use cases!
I use a crappy wood comb to comb beard oil through my beard, then I use my Chicago Combs to comb out my beard. When the wood one breaks or gets all nasty I will not be replacing it. I will stay with the Chicago Combs #8 as my favorite and a # 2 for my pocket. I started using Chicago Combs from seeing them on your channel. Thank you for making my bearded journey so much better.
Hi Dan C, I was wondering if you ever used one of those coconut oil infused plastic combs and are they just a gimmick, I'm not sure about the science behind it ,if it actually extracts oil from the plastic onto the hair? I love the channel, Thanks!!!
I switched from a wooden comb to a plastic Kent comb that has two different size teeth on it for versatility. Definitely works better for my 4 inch beard. Also made the switch from heat brush to hairdryer. Those two changes combined have completely changed how my beard looks and for the better as well. Thanks to your advice! :)
I used a Kent comb for a while, but as my beard got longer it stared pulling out hair. I recently switched to the #8 Chicago comp per your recommendation, and its great! Definitely my favorite comb so far. I also have an ox horn comb, that's not too bad.
Hey Dan! I was wondering, have you ever used one of those Wet Brushes? I started using one recently and it was a bit of a game changer for me. Especially later in the day, many hours after styling. I have about a 7" beard measured from the bottom lip. That brush seems to be the best at "re-grooming". It's full without frizz and even. Anyhow... I know you're thinking "if it works for you then go for it". I'm just curious your thoughts on it.
Yes into Chicago comb because of your videos. I have # 6, 8, 1, 2, and a pet comb I gave to my wife. Plan to order the #7 pick comb shortly as my beard is getting long enough to use. See what you done to me😄😄😄.
I have a goodline stainless steel comb. Is that bad? It bites when I use the fine tooth side and I'm not being careful. But the further wide teeth work decently.
I have every single one of those combs. To include the Walmart one that I keep in my shower. I am down to only the Chicago combs now and a brush by Royal Beardsmen. Good video my man!!!
Started with those cheap wooden double side combs and quickly changed because couldn't get deep enough in my beard, feeling like it was useless. Bought 2 Kent combs after that a R7T that never leaves my bag to do a quick check up through the day, and a 9T for the bathroom. But once my beard grew longer, I saw Dan's videos and I bought a buffalo horn and it changed my life ! Curious about the carbon ones, they seem to be really great !
I have a big long beard, but the hair is fine so a wide tooth comb doesn't work well for me. A comb that has slightly finer teeth keeps the hairs closer together, so my beard actually looks fuller. For that reason I still love my Kent 9T.
Thank you ! I just ordered a cheap double side wood comb ... I feel like it didn't even go thru my beard .. useless.. I don't feel so bad now for smash all the teeth out and tossing it 🤬😆
Hey Dan, I’m new to the beard journey. 3 months in to growing my beard for the first time. I’m at maybe an inch and a half of growth. Definitely fuller on the shelf/ bottom of my beard, cheeks are a little behind and less full but I’m pushing through. I use a boars hair brush daily + oil. From my understanding a comb isn’t quite for me at this stage I’m correct to assume this?
You recommended the Chicago combs carbon fiber a while back, I ordered one and haven’t looked back. Best comb ever. OBTW…your cover shot has Beard misspelled, unless that was intended.
I started with a Kent comb when my beard was short and like Dan I now just use it for my mustache and head hair. It’s very good quality and has held up well for over a year. I now have two buffalo horn combs, a wide tooth like Dan showed in the video and a more fine tooth one from Bad Ass Beard Co. I love them both for different uses. I have a fairly curly beard and the wide teeth give my hair more room to move without tangling. The fine tooth I like to use after applying heat when my beard is straighter and it gives a nice finished look. I also use a Chicago comb #8 in the shower for the same reasons that Dan laid out. It works great, has long teeth and I don’t have to worry about it being wet. Overall I prefer the buffalo horn combs for styling simply because I like the look of them more than the Chicago combs. However, you really can’t go wrong with either.
I loved my ox horn handle comb but once my beard got to a certain length it just couldn’t get deep enough into my beard so I traded it in for the carbon fiber #8 both are great combs though I would recommend them to anyone
I just received an ox horn comb from Beard Octane and when I rinsed it for the first time, it had a very strange smell. Is this normal for a new ox horn comb? This is the first ox horn comb I have purchased, so not sure. Would u recommend washing it with some beard wash prior to using it for the first time?
Hey Dan , with reference to Chicago combs ,what is your reason for for using the one with handle more than the pet comb ? Is it because of the handle convenience.
