I’ve gone thru a cycle as well. Now that I’m around the 6 inch mark I recently went to the wider toothed Octane ox horn and really, really like it better than the regular at this length. Great video as always!

Great video, Dan. I'm at a stage as I grow toward "big beard status", where I'm finding out I have a LOT of curl and wave to my beard. I find that, even though I'm only four or five months in, I can't get my beard comb with the shorter tines through it. I picked up the Chicago Comb you talked about a few videos ago. Absolute game changer! It's my go-to first thing in the a.m. or when I get home from work (mask mash). Don't use the brush much any more, just to do a "top dressing" after my morning routine. Keep 'em coming, Dan. Learning lots.

Chicago comb 8 for my medium beard has worked well. I haven't really stopped using other combs due to length, more because the CC8 works so well. I might use a comb with small teeth to tame curls, but that's because I don't have a boar brush. Getting a round brush and probably will use that more than the short teeth comb.

Dan, that is some great info. I’m at the medium length stage & probably starting here & not going longer. The process I use for my mostly grey, extremely wavy kinky beard is this and seems to work pretty well. Out of the shower and drying about 75%, comb through w/ ox horn comb. Apply oil & comb again w/ ox horn. Wait 5 or so minutes & then blow dry using a round boar’s hair brush. That’s the only thing I’ve found that gives the tension I need to somewhat straight this beast. The after blow dry, I apply balm or butter. Comb through again with the ox horn comb. And finally use the regular boar’s hair brush to style (try and lock down any flyaways). It’s a process that my wife gives me grief over occasionally but all in good fun.

I find the boars hair brush to be great at shaping my mustasch to the sides while blowdrying my beard. After that i only need to apply a tiny bit balm to keep it in place rest of the day. No need to constantly correcting it with my fingers all day long.

Now that I think of it I have a firm boar bristle brush that I never really used.Custom made in Germany. Cost me a fair amount. Only use my Kent comb to comb my mustache. I'm about about 8" and find that my most used tool is my handled ox horn comb. Used it in the morning and at night. I've put it through it's paces and still going strong.

Wow, I went through this same evolution and didn’t even realize it. Kent comb was my first and realized it wasn’t getting the job done, went to a ox horn and love it but lately have noticed that has been a chore, may have to get a handled horn comb now. I also find myself not using the boars hair brush anymore but have been in love with the detangler wet brush with the knobs on the end. All this time I thought I was doing something wrong, never realized it was part of the process. Thanks Dan C

Great video. I’ve definitely experimented with lots of different tools. For my medium length beard, I actually like using a pick and come from underneath to poof everything out. Love this video! I'm still in what I feel is the short range and all I use is a boars hair brush and a comb. I have 2 different boars hair bristle brushes. I was recently shopping for a round boar bristle brush. I had bought one earlier but it was just too big in diameter for my “short” beard so I wanted a smaller one. Found one like you mentioned with the holes for the air to go through as you dry and brush that also is boars hair. Best of both worlds. It’s made by conair and is very cheap compared to some others. So far would recommend! Animal horn is next on my list.

A round brush really changed everything for me. I had never used one until recently, and now it's by far the most used brush I have. I like both a regular round brush, and a boards hair round brush. If you don't feel like your beard is styling quite right, and you've never used one, give it a try.

Brilliant video! I’ve been questioning for a while what I’m using or what I should be moving on to. I use my Kent & Beardbrand combs mainly as well as a pompadour comb to gently break up the hairs when I wake up. Hi Dan, Have to send you another shout out for good advice. The ox horn comb from Detroit Grooming is the first comb to get through my 18 inch beard from top to bottom, under-beard and all. Your recommendation to comb right after conditioning while the beard is still wet worked. The beard represents about 3 years of growth. And yes the tools have changed during this journey. From a simple pocket comb while it was short. At yeard length started to use a boars hair brush and wooden comb. After two years growth the brush was the only way to get out the tangles, besides finger combing. Again thanks for the great content. Stay safe.

I have just kent combs of all size. I carry a r7t everyday in my pocket. Got the 9t and really liked it for awhile but I think my beard is a bit too long now but still works good if you keep your head hair short. I think I'm moving up to the 16t on my beard, which is what I've been using on my head hair. I have a ZilbarHaar Major boar bristle brush that is pretty stiff but the bristles are long so can be used for longer beard growth. You can always adjust the pressure on a stiff brush. Hopefully in a few months I can move into the deeper combing combs.

When I straighten/blow dry my beard I have the same experience as you, but if I leave it natural I've found my Boars Hair brush and round brush are very useful for styling to a presentable level. The boars hair helps interlock hair and make my beard lay flatter, while the round brush helps with dips. I always start with a wooden pick to detangle my beard, I have a Kent 12T and 10T that I rarely use anymore, they are the best combs though.

I still find the boars hair brush very useful at any stage of length. It might not get to my skin like when I had a shorter beard but it is very helpful taming stray hairs that like to go rogue on me. Very helpful if I just need a quick touch up. I am moving more into the oxhorn camp, but I still love my Chicago #6, and I still use my boars bristle whenever I want more outer styling after my routine. I'm surprised it took me this long to find this video, but it's a banger as always Teach! I had my Beard Octane pocket sized oxhorn at work last night and a female coworker with hair down to her tushy had some knots, and when I offered it to her she looked at it and said her hair was gonna break it, I just laughed and said no it won't. She was amazed that it got her hair untangled as fast as it did, and my comb is still just fine hahaha

I have loads of tools I've collected over the years. My beard is currently 6-7 inches long & I've found I use less tools now than when it was shorter. I prefer my beard to look natural so I don't straighten it any more & the only tool I use is my boar bristle brush from Zilberhaar. I detangle my beard beard with my fingers while applying oil & then use the brush underneath 1st & then down. I just can't get combs through my beard anymore due to snags.

Excellent talk-through of your experience with the tools! Because my beard isn't as straight, to say the least, I've also dealt with wide-tooth combs (Kent and such are Fine and Coarse), not to mention Detangling Combs and Brushes. Also, my beard is much less dense, so I can get by without handles. Nevertheless, you've provided much food for thought.

I have also noticed a lot of changes with brushes has my beard grows in length and thickness started out with a simple wooden beard comb from Walmart the two-sided one and then later on Triad Barrel brush when it got a little longer than that the beginning stages anyways and then started messing around with afro picks the one with the metal tines is the one I usually use now has wide Space X they're all metal and it reaches the skin so I can stimulate the skin follicles after oiling and I'll also breaks up knots in my under beard and then for a smooth finish I usually go through the whole thing using one of those Sleek shampoo Combs with the long tines that are far spaced apart and that's what I use now and I'm a little over 3 years on my beard and plan on going longer and Fuller in the future so always looking for different products to keep it looking good and hydrated and also I picked up a few tips after I apply the oil I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then I gently comb through and then I put my butter in and then style how I like then I'm ready for the day and also a little bit of beard wax on my mustache and fly away areas really helps a lot to keep keep my beard under control throughout the day thanks for all the information a lot of the beard tips and styling tricks I Learned was from your Channel God bless you have a wonderful day keep living bearded brother. I wish I knew at the beginning to use the boars brush, but heck, at the beginning I wasn't even using oil lol. This would have been good to me to see a little before I transitioned to more length, but I made it through it lol. I was mainly just using a wood comb from live bearded that was fine. THEN I found your video about Chicago combs and realized my comb was too small. I definitely went through a number of tools, and I wasn't cleaning them enough, so I had to throw a few out.

I usually use a sandalwood comb right after the shower, to help distribute the oil after I put it on, and then a boar's hair brush once I put on butter or balm to help smooth everything out. I picked up Badass Beard Care's folding oxhorn comb, to have something with me when I'm out, and it's a great comb. Gotten lucky with a couple other companies sending me free combs and brushes with my orders.

This was a really timely video for me! My beard is 4.5 inches currently so getting into the medium stage and I've been trying some new products. I have a well liked wooden comb that I need to replace so it looks like I'll be getting a handled buffalo horn one, thanks for the recommendation! The round brush is still a necessity though, it's not going anywhere yet. One struggle is that I'm growing the sides out as well and still get some super annoying fly away hairs regularly there, the regular boar's hair paddle brush doesn't really do anything for them, is there a tool you'd recommend until gravity takes over?

Dan, since you like the OX horn with a handle, take a look at the Kent 21T Wide Tooth Comb, it actually has a 25 tooth count, it's a double row (Detangler). Kent now calls it "The Diana" and when you look at the side profile, the spacing is same as the OX Horn. It's my go to comb these days with a thick, bushy, grey mid/long size beard!

Good video. I'm going to purchase the combs you currently use . I have thinned out my beard a lot by not using the proper comb. My beard under my chin knots up so easy when I brush or comb I pull the hair out rather than remove the knot. My experience is, if it's not working right, stop immediately, wrong combs and brushes will damage your beard.

One of the main reasons I switched from an ox horn comb to a handled ox horn comb was, I was pulling out hair trapped under my fingers as I combed. With the handled comb my fingers were removed from the equation and less hair was ending up in the sink.

@blazingbeardproducts2845 4 года назад
I've had the same exact experience with non handled combs, I have a Kent 10T handled comb that eliminated that issue, but mostly I use a wooden pick when my beard is on the longer side.

I find that even with a longer beard, my boar bristle brush is super effective at getting flyaways to lie down. I just lightly run the brush over my beard after drying/styling and tuck those flyaways back into the beard.

Yoooo Dan!!! Awesome video!! I'm still a fairly new member to the bearded community. I dont own a round bristle brush, I dont own a Kent comb, I started off with a wood comb and standard oval shaped boars hair brushes. Ive had a few different boars brushes, some with super stiff bristles, and some with super soft, and I fully agree, I got my beard octane brush and is the best for me, it's a good middle ground between tough and soft bristles. I still use everything I've got, love running combs through my beard, and the brush, it all feels soooooo gooooood. I'm between 5 and 6in right now, and now that you say it, it is definitely getting harder to reach my skin through my beard with the boars hair brush. I wonder if I'll put it down or not soon. I prefer my handled ox horn combs over ones without. All in all, great video, planning on sharing this with my good buddies that are just starting out the bearded journey 😁👊🏼
