I love the way you teach. Its easy to understand, which is not easily said for most biology classes. My husband and I both laughed laughed so hard about your example of of phospholipids being like schizophrenic balloons. Please keep the videos coming!!!

molecules that have hydrophilic & hydrophobic ends are properly said to be "amphipathic". I intentionally used the psychiatric term "schizophrenic" (literally "split personality") to describe this concept. -- professor fink

Thanks, I'd just like to add that the proper translation would be "split mind", since phrenos means "mind", "intellect", "soul" (precisely: location of the soul, I am not talking about the christ. term) or "reason"; I can't remember if there's a term for "personality" like we use the word nowadays. One more thing, even though I guess many do know: "Schizophrenia does not imply a "split personality" or "multiple personality disorder" - conditions with which it is often confused in public perception." @@xDomglmao For someone learning A&P this word is probably associated with the phrenic nerve (i.e. diaphragmatic) above other things. Phrenology as a dated fallacy comes to my mind second.
@xDomglmao
@xDomglmao 3 года назад
@@ina268 if I remember correctly that's actually where the phrenic nerve got its name from (connection to the mind bcs diaphragm was thought be seat of soul?) but dont quote me on this :)
@ina268
@ina268 3 года назад
@@xDomglmao Yep, it's easily googlable, I mean for someone learning A&P, without any special interest in psychiatry or linguistics, phrenic is most likely associated with the diaphragm (first and foremost, while mind/personality/etc meanings are somewhat extra).

Thanks for the free lectures! I've got a question. If there is no cholesterol in plants as you said in the video before and cholesterol is necessary for steroid hormone production and people can live on plants only, what metabolic precursor is in plants that is a sufficient substitute for cholesterol?
@professorfink
@professorfink 2 года назад
saturated fats (in plants oils) can be converted into cholesterol
@hansrichter5227
@hansrichter5227 2 года назад
@@professorfink Thank you Professor! I just watched the next lecture where you give this information. Yesterday I tried to find out why tropical oils might be so high in saturated fatty acids. And came to the hypothesis that a high percentage of saturated fatty acids has the advantage for the plant of being able to store more energy because on the one hand there are more bonds that net release more energy while being metabolised and on the other hand saturated fatty acids have less sterical hinderance (natural unsaturated fatty acids have cis-C=C bonds) so the fat molecules with saturated fatty acids can be packed more compactly but this effect leads to fats with higher melting intervals and I believe that plants need liquid fat for efficient metabolization. So the question shouldn't be "why are tropical oils high in saturated fatty acids?", rather than "why are non-tropical oils high in unsaturated fatty acids?" And the answer might be that non-tropical oils wouldn't be liquid otherwise. So if there were "new" or exotic oils to be used in cooking for some reason it might be a good heuristic to find out the natural climate in which its plant grows if there is no available data about fatty acid composition. Do you know if transfats are so unhealthy because our bodies can't handle it properly?

Schizophrenia means "split mind," not "split personality." It is a common misconception that people with schizophrenia have multiple personalities.
