Have been doing Kegel exercises before my surgery. Has been 3 months and I have had good results. I don’t drink carbonated drinks, coffee, tea after my surgery. I have now started doing other exercises, leg, abdominal, and other exercises. Also I lost 30 pounds in preparation for my prostate removal surgery. Thanks for the great video’s.
Ive had my catheter in for 12 days and getting it out on the 15th day. Im nervous about incontinence, but i will do the exercises recommended. Wish me luck.
Hi Michelle, now 6 weeks post prostatectomy, and 4 weeks post catheter removal, (here in Perth)my leakage is now mainly from around mid morning to mid afternoon, not heavy just irritating, can now go through the night without having to get up, pelvic floor exercises were started 2 weeks before op, and more normal feelings etc getting better every day, thanks for your helpful info.
Thank you Michelle. It's been two weeks since my Prostate surgery, and I am finding your videos to be the best for information and training. I'll definitely keep up the training.
Thank you Kevin! It must be quite challenging for some people with English as a second or third language , I really need to caption more too help every one too,. I’m so glad this helped you! All the best for recovery
Hello Michelle and thanks for this video. It clarifies exercises I have already been doing. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008 and have had the same symptoms described here. I have not had my prostate removed because the doctor thought it was too close to spreading the cancer. How do you see these exercises working for me and are there any modifications I need to make?
I chose "WAIT AND SEE"... whilst changing my diet and drinks, exercising more, and taking Finasteride..( which NOBODY mentioned/offered, till after I persistently resisted surgery!)..my PSA halved, and my "Peeing" and health didn't get any worse this last 4 years...downside; my sex drive has lowered, tho' it doesn't effect everyone that way,apparently..I had an ok sex life most of my life..but "I've been there and done that!" As I've got older, my health and comfort are my priorities...!
Ma'am I am a man of 54yrs. By the symptoms I think I have prostate problem. Can you please tell me some exercises to prevent further prostate problem ?
You're a star, Michelle. This has made me feel much more confident about what's in store. It's your open, totally honest but cheery style that's so helpful.
I’m so glad to read this a Thomas - you’re looking at around 3 months if you can keep up your training. Try to increase the strength of your holds and number of repetitions as you’re able to - ultimately see if you can work to 100 reps daily (10x10) all the best!
Thank you so much, Michelle for your channel. From personal experience I can tell all your advice is good. I had radical surgery and suffered extreme loss of bladder control. However, I did the exercises ( not quite as precisely as you describe them) and had recovered to a manageable level somewhere between 6 and 12 months but it was close to 24 months before I could say I was completely confident to go without any protection. Unfortunately It was then determined that the cancer was not completely removed so, radiotherapy to the prostate bed was recommended. There seems to be a lot of confusing information out there or perhaps lack of understanding by the medical profession. To start with the effects of radiation were only supposed to last for six weeks but I suffered no effects for three months then suddenly there was a gradual decline in my bladder control which went on for about 18 months so, no amount of exercise had a lasting effect. I am hopeful that I have turned the corner as far as the delayed effects are concerned but still having trouble getting any benefit from the exercises. Do you have any experience with this situation, which I believe to be common, or any advice for someone like me. The radiotherapy does seem to have done the trick so, it's fingers as well as legs crossed. Many thanks
Hi. Although its only about 4 weeks into my concerted effort using your method. I seem to be quickly getting better. So much so that I walked 9 miles today without needing a pee stop. A massive improvement when 4 weeks ago I'd be stopping 7 or 8 times. I cannot manage the recommended 6 exercises per day yet, more like 3, but things are looking promising. Many thanks for your encouragement. I now feel I'm exercising the correct area thanks to your tips and already planning a long bike ride. Just to add that I had laparoscopic prostatectomy 2012 followed by 37 radiotherapy sessions which caused all my issues. I was very close to investigating pelvic sling operation but now choosing your exercise method instead. Thanks
Thanks so much for your feedback @BJM276! It's great to read that you are making such quick progress after so many years of being so challenged. All the best to you and enjoy every minute of your long bike ride :)
Hi Michelle. I had my Prostate surgery in 2008 and since then i have been wearing pads. I got no advice on exercises at the time, and I was wondering if it is too late to start now/
Hi Michelle. I had my surgery almost 20 years ago and now 80 years old. Within the past couple of years my leakage has increased. I'm guilty for not doing my execerses consistently. I'm now returning to the routine. Would that be your recommendation, or should I consider other routines?
@Mike Vande Woude hi, yes this would be my recommendation - get back into your standing kegels, aim for up to 60 long (up to 10 second holds) and 60 short (1-2 second holds). You can build up to this amount gradually over time and be sure to focus on using the muscles at the front when doing your exercises. Muscle strengthening is possible at any age so there’s no reason why you can’t work on your strength and endurance to reduce your leakage despite surgery 20 years ago. Wishing you all the best!🙏
Ma'am, I have been suffering from urinary disorder for last 10 years. Symptoms are incomplete voiding, frequent urge to urinate, lower pelvic pain, waiting a long time for urine to come out
Very good video that I wish had came out prior to my surgery, but fortunately I made arrangements with a therapist that had me do exactly what your video instructed. It definitely speeded up recovery and my incontinence was not very long. Presently, I use thin pads only when away from home.
Meeting you Dr Igho channel on RU-vid is like meeting GOD himself, what you did in my life is what no other doctor can't do, Thank you for Dr Igho, for helping me Enhance my Penis with your super herbs, you are a life saver may God bless you
Pre-surgery exercise you suggest starting the urine flow first but you also suggest sitting, lying down, and standing. Other than standing at the toilet how does this work? thank you. your video is very helpful.
Hi, I'm a little over a month post surgery, getting better. Still have to use guards. Going back to work in a few weeks. Exercises are going OK, but not as effective. Is there anything else I can do, or is there any kind of therapy that you can recommend? Thanks in advance. Houston, TX
@BIGFREAKY69 exercises are the key. Current thinking is to do them in standing up to 60 fast 1 second contraction and 60m(up to 10 secs) contractions so total around 120 kegels daily. Use the muscles at the front of your pelvic floor as if to shorten the penis and stop the flow, this action is key. All the best for your recovery!
Thanks Michele for your help. My urologist did not suggest or prescribe any exercises before surgery. So now I’m trying to do your suggested exercises. Some improvement after 6 weeks, dry nights but during the day I leak constantly. Most concerning, to say the least! Is this normal?
Hi Dennis I’m having surgery in 8 weeks. Starting my exercise now. Did you start improving? Hopefully you did. My urologist didn’t say anything either.
Hi Michelle, I am limiting my coffee intake to only one cup a day. I usually have it in the morning with breakfast. I have switched to decaf coffee. My question is, does decaf coffee also irritate the bladder too? Thanks for your videos.
@Art Greenberg sincere apologies for the delayed reply, your qn somehow skipped past me. Yes decaff can irritate the bladder too however this can be an individual basis so trial and error are the best way to know for you individually. Decaff does contain caffeine which increases the rate of bladder filling which can be problematic for some men, however not to the same degree as regular coffee. I hope this helps Art, all the best!
@The Social Commenter my pleasure! Happy I could be of help! Thanks so much for the beautiful words, much appreciated. ❤️! I am most grateful to your support❤️
Dear Michelle, does this pelvic floor muscle exercises also include for open radical prostatectomy with complete removal of the internal urethral sphincter muscles (muscles at the urinary bladder neck)? My surgery involved complete removal of the internal urethral sphincter muscles. Two months after surgery I still experience urinary leakage. I've done pelvic floor exercises 2 months before surgery, no pelvic floor exercises when catheter was on, but immediately continue with the exercises after the catheter was taken off. Now, 2 months after surgery, I still experience incontinence. Please advice, thank you.
@malcolmwestaway4290 hey there Malcolm thank you so much for your generous donation 🙏 this helps me help you & others, my sincere gratitude & wishing you all the very best for your recovery Mal 💜
Thanks madam for the posting! I am on my medication and still this troubles me a lot especially when I move around. Pressure to urinate immediately makes me worrying.
Hi. Thanks for the video. Is it possible to suffer a setback after starting the exercises? I am sure that I was doing them correctly during the day but that night I had some leakage while in bed. I am just 5 days post TURP. I was just having a few drops leak out when standing up, but after I began the exercises that happened when laying down.
@Paul Grace make sure your catheter has been removed before exercises. And yes remember the exercises can fatigue the muscles so that by the end of the day may not work as effectively. Stick with it, first 6 weeks should start to show a difference and gradually try to increase your reps within your range of comfort, this takes time. All the best for your recovery Paul, this will improve
@@michellephysio yes. The catheter was removed before my discharge from the hospital after I was able to pee. Thanks much for the reply. Doing better as time goes by.
Thank you so much, Michelle, for the good information! Unfortunately, I was catheterized for 4 1/2 months before my surgery (HoLEP), and during the week after, the post-op catheter was twice the diameter of the earlier ones, so my external sphincter believes that it no longer has any responsibility to the rest of the organism. I’ve been told that this will improve, and the Kegels you’re presenting will be a significant part of that process, but the use of them will be only post-op in my case. I wonder if you’ve ever run across any science-based evaluation of the benefit (or the counsel to avoid) the “Horse Stance,” as it’s practiced in a variety of martial arts and in yoga-based strength and flexibility exercises. It would seem to me that, in addition to its work on the muscles of the legs and those around the pelvic girdle, that the pelvic floor must be engaged as well. Thanks!
@arsalanazizi2538 Hi there, great question thank you! Yes most men benefit from Kegel exercises for maintaining pelvic floor muscle strength & endurance. Some men experience ED after TURP too. Kegels are beneficial for bladder & bowel control along with erectile function for many men. Here's a real time Kegels workout you may find helpful too ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c0aDJrSiR1A.htmlsi=ZPbJtKEOr0Y02mGd as well as this video that explains the 2 essential types of Kegels for men ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n6z88aU1dMw.html I hope this info is helpful! All the best 🙏🏽
@John Goard This will depend on many factors, the research suggests that men that start pelvic floor training prior to surgery may experience improved bladder control 2-6 weeks after surgery and that many men report being dry at 3 months post-op (see 7:02 this video) I hope this info helps and all the best for your recovery 🙏
@@michellephysio Well thanks Michelle I will look at the video and although I did the occasional pelvic floor exercises before the operation I feel I should have done more. So I think I am going to only regain a part of my bladder control that much longer as the catheter and leg bag will have been in place for a week before it is removed and I can see me being fairly incontinent after that removal. In hindsight, I am beginning to think I would have not had it done.
@@johngoard8272 hang in there John, get started on your exercises as soon as your catheter is removed and these exercises should help a great deal. All the best John!
@@michellephysio Thanks for the good wishes Michelle I shall follow your instructions and maybe try and see a physiotherapist who will help me locally🙂
Can these exercise be done while the cath is in place? My dad had urinary retention due to tumors in the prostate and is expected to have a prostectomy. He has had the cath in place for about two months and waiting for surgery.
@Stan Chill Kegel exercises are important for almost all men. If there is the remote possibility of prostate surgery there is all the more reason to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles with these exercises, cheers 🙏
@Mike Brown yes Kegels are beneficial for men regardless of surgery and they are recommended for most men lifelong to maintain pelvic floor strength and the health benefits that accompany this 🙏
Can you please tell some exercises for mildly enlarged prostate? I'm not allowed to use alpha blockers because of my heart conditions (atrial fibrillation).
@TheAccountability there are no specific exercises for enlarged prostate however pelvic floor relaxation and techniques to completely empty the bladder can help see here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--FEayz4DHEk.html I hope this info helps 🙏
After prostate surgery, the bladder has become weak.the bladder is not able to expel urine. Is the exercise suggested by you will help to strengthen the bladder and help the flow of the urine normally. Please clarify
Hi Michelle, Thanks for your detailed and comprehensive guidance of Kegel & pelvic floor exercises for men. I suppose you mentioned for men after prostate surgery, you are referring to urine incontinence. In this video here, you described the exercise with stopping the urine flow and shortening of the penis, but in other videos you included the tightening of the anus stopping gas, which is correct or better technique?
Hi John I’m glad you asked this question! Exactly correct if you want to improve bladder control (& ED) then the action is to shorten and stop the flow. To improve bowel/gas control then contract the anus too. Does this make sense?
My prostate is according to a test report mildly enlarged. Incontinence in urination, frequent urge to urinate , a kind of shivering all across the body especially at night are evident. What should I do mam?
By using a plastic bag which is used to carry fruits and vegetables , test it out with water, make sure it is not leaking, using a scissor , cut from about the middle of the bag , at 45 degrees toward the opening of the bag, then put middle cut portion of the bag below the scrotum to hold it and the penis inside the bag, before using the bag , put 1 or 2 paper kitchen towel in the bag, then use belt to hold it in place ! Then you can use a under wear to have firm grip over it .....
Hi Michelle, I am 3 weeks post-surgery not sure if I am doing this right should I feel tightening in my sphincter muscles as I do the exercise ? no pun intended but my penis is shorter since the surgery how do I shorten it more what muscles.
MY PROSTATE SIZE IS 80MM YESTERDAY URINE FLOW STOPED AND CATHERA APPLIED FOR THREE DAYS. TWO YRS. BACK THE SAME HAPPENED THE SIZE WAS 45CC . MY QUESTION IS UP TO WHAT SIZE OPERATION NOT REQUIRED? I AM DIABETIC ( FASTING - 120)
My question is, how do you know the size. The finger method is inaccurate, you might have 120cc. Anyway, there is no exact prostate science, London doctors usually want to do surgery and earn their lambo, public doctors are probably told "only send to surgery if he is dying" . By the way, 45 to 80 is scary increase, but even more scary that it stopped at 45. They only give you pills at 45.
My patient is also suffering from Alzheimer's along with prostate enlargement. So cant do exercise himself. He is capable of sitting, walking, eating etc by himself but cant control urination as you advised. Is there any alternative ?
Hello Ma'am, I have to pee more than 20 times a day and i m totally desperate , and my urine doesn't flow all it once, i have to pressure all the time and when I pressure for urine my nerves pains while pressuring , so I dont know what's the actual problem of my frequent urination, as I have done many test and check up but couldn't find the real problem ... Will you suggest me some good tips to rid of this because I m in trouble and irritated going to bathroom all the day. Because I need to stay hydrated also but the problem that occurs is excessive peeing , but when I drink less water the problem decreases. . Can you help me through out this , as i have been following ur channel all the time.
