You forgot to mention roads! And the cost of vehicle maintenance. Poor land can keep you poor. We've blown through 4 vehicles in 6 months out here. Im just taking the opportunities i have but.. Whew. Man. Not for everyone. The farther out you are the more things you have to do for yourself and that sounds romantic and all but it really sucks sometimes to have to rebuild the front end on your 4x4 at home without easy access to parts. We are 3 miles down a private road here and it takes 20 minutes to get to the highway, another 36 after that to get to town. The water truck is rusted through with no brakes, its tailgate fell off last week, and we do indeed live among the pakololo and rooster farmers. We have a lot of retirees out here but when they call 911 they're more likely to die before getting to the hospital than they would in town. Just things to consider. It seems the best place for the majority to retire would be a city where there are facilities to handle the common problems of old age, that way they don't have to move again when health declines. My grandparents just had to move across the state a few weeks ago for these reasons. I'm working on getting an education and practicing in business so I can be useful on the island rather than expecting the island to cater to me. Give before you take, y'know? Glad to see ya again!

Yes, roads, very important. Most of the private ones are in terrible shape. I drive ordinary cars and refuse to visit some people due to the condition of their roads. You need a Hummer to go to the store on some of these roads.

@@GreenGardenGuy1 I wore out a Toyota 4x4 on this road. Broke front end components and had to limp home. Thousands of dollars in parts and labor. It costs as much as another used truck to rebuild this one every so often.

@@mountain-man0 This is one of the unspoken costs of cheap land in Hawaii. Auto repair isn't the only extra expense when buying low price land in Hawaii.

My viewers and clients often give me the best inspiration. You are just one of a long list of folks scared about the lung worm. A bit of care and some safety rules will prevent infection. Thanks for the idea, I've been fallow lately.

I get into spells where I have little worth while to say. I went quiet for a while but I will be back. My drummer friend just said he is dropping in tomorrow. Perhaps I will have some music to record.

They don't talk about it but Rat Lung worm is also in the southern US mainland. South Florida has it bad. Here the Semi slug carries it. In Florida it is mostly an invasive African Snail. It's no big deal for careful people. The nematode doesn't like people and doesn't come looking for you. You have to be careless enough to eat it yourself. I got it grooming my moustache when the slug was relatively unknown here. Slugs are difficult to control but rats are pretty easy. No one wants rats around anyway. Keep the rat population dispatched and the slugs have no rat crap to eat. If they have no rat crap there is no lung worm. Pretty simple, people like to panic and make a big deal out of small problems. Be careful of what you pick up on the coconut telegraph around here. It is almost as deceptive as A.I. generated BS. Aloha

I tried crime for a while as a young man. Lousy way to make a living. Get a sore neck looking over your shoulder all the time. Decent social behavior, manners and good karma actually seem to pay off. Just not as fast.

I'm not sure if the trend continues, but I was looking at crime data a few years ago. Theft and property crimes were down from where they were 20 years ago. Pretty much crime all around the board was down.

Actually, the Aloha state has rapidly become Attack and rob state. HONOLULU (KHON2) - There was a staggering 80% increase in homicides in west Oahu since 2022, according to a report by Honolulu police during a commission meeting on Wednesday, Nov 15, 2023. We are still doing better than Chicago though. In general the damage done to the gut flora has left many people depressed, anxious and with PTSD. Even though the number of violent crimes in Chicago grew to its highest level in a decade last year, the arrest rate dropped. Robbery and vehicle theft both rose by over 30% last year. Homicides dropped 14% in 2023 from the year before, totaling 625 dead, but that's still nearly 50% more homicides than a decade ago. Mar 12, 2024 The morning news in Hawaii used to be a pleasure, it is no longer. Too many stabbings, attacks and gunshots.

@@GreenGardenGuy1 Wonder if that is just Oahu or all islands. Maybe because fentanyl? I might look again to see more current numbers.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 5 месяцев назад
@@wMerlinw I remember what life was like here before Covid. It isn't the same, people act out more often than they used to. Covid destroyed the gut flora and left the entire country anxious, depressed and with PTSD. Fentanyl doesn't help but most of that issue is self correcting. Users eventually over dose and die.

@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 5 месяцев назад
@@flipper184 Nope, crime isn't down, it's up. Covid messed with the mental state of most who contracted it. Gut flora, Dopamine producing bacteria got messed up by the virus. Doesn't always return to the prior condition. Leaves people feeling hopeless, anxious and depressed. In response they act out.

The crime maps are by population, so if you have a town with two people and one murders the other you have a very violent town with a murder rate of 50%! Small towns always look very violent on those maps just because one or two crimes skews the data harder in a low pop place
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 5 месяцев назад
Like I said, crime doesn't follow straight lines and the most remote locations on this Island, like the top of the mountains, show high crime rate. The maps can only be used to get a general sense of conditions in a given area. Use your imagination to get closer to the real picture. I just get tired of answering peoples questions about how criminal the area I live in is. Now I have a map and can let people figure it out for themselves. Puna is the wild west, for sure. IF you are looking for civilized conditions try Fremont, CA. Mostly green. I used to live there, the map is correct. Puna is for people who can't get any further from the Mainland USA culture and still be in the country.

I absolutely love Puna. I grew up on Kauai and it’s just too small, Puna feels almost endless in comparison. Edit: I also like the part where I can afford to live in Puna vs the millions it costs to live on Kauai now 😂

@@enigmatic-hamster I used to travel a lot. It was almost an obsession. I had an image in my head of the perfect place on Earth to live and I was looking for it. After a while I settled on the idea that high elevation in a tropical area would be about right. After 25 years in California drought and fire I also figured the weather should be on the wetter side of dry. Puna filled all this nicely. Sometimes I want to have a waterfall in the backyard and a walk to the beach but then there is that old cost factor. I'm happy the way things are, I stopped looking. Aloha
