Wanting to get out and photograph some wildlife I decided to check out a local pond. I discovered several Prothonotary Warblers and had a ball out photographing and filming them! I would love to hear your thoughts, so be sure to comment, Like and subscribe, oh, share this video with your friends!
Cheers, Neil

Tremendous photos and videos. It may be difficult photographing from a kayak, but they let you get close to critters you couldn't approach otherwise. You did very well and have some beautiful images -- well done sir.

Definitely! They don’t feel as threatened when you are on the water. Thanks again!

Wow. You got some great pics and video of these gorgeous birds. The fact that you were drifting created some nice motion as you sort of circled around the bird. I love your genuine enthusiasm for what you’re doing. I just discovered your channel and am looking forward to seeing more from you. Question - Did you take the video shots with your handheld camera or were those from the tripod mounted camera?
@NeilJernigan

Yeah that did help and after reviewing the footage I was happy with the drift! All video was shot on a cinema tripod, could be better but it help for sure. Thanks!

Just wonderful! I love Prothonotry Warblers too, but I live at the extreme northern range of the species, so I usually have to travel a few dozen miles south for them. They arrive here in mid May from their tropical overwintering. You are living in the land of Prothonotary Warblers for sure! I am hearing Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Summer Tanagers in the audio as well, so that would be a fun photo mission! Love the video! Keeping it real and teaching at the same time...great work as always! Thank you!

I can't stand shooting from my kayak! It was so bad one day at the end of Jordan Lake, even with the slightest breeze it was still moving on me. I ended up buying a 10ft Porta Bote on FB Marketplace from a lady in Morehead City, then found a lightly used 3.5hp engine. This setup is so much better than the kayak - stability is excellent, it doesn't move on me that much and it has a shallow draft.

The next day I shot from a small aluminum jon boat and had much better luck due to the stability.

Lovely outing. I thought it might be difficult to vlog, paddle, balance the kayak, try to not lose the oar, shoot stills and video. Beautiful images, thank you.

Yeah it was difficult but I was able to manage and not get wet or loose anything! Thanks for watching!

I checked and the Prothonotary Warbler is rare here, Arizona. I never saw one. One interesting feature of the bird I kept noticing, the bushy eyebrows. My field guide does not show it at all. Am I mistaken? Photographing from a boat, even in calm water must take a lot of practice. I hope that does not include taking a dunk. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful bird.

Yeah this little guy had something wet/sticky on its head which caused a “horn” like feather to pop up. Thanks!

A sit in kayak is way better to photograph from. You are closer to the water for low angle shots, and you can use the side of your kayak to stabilize your camera. The kayak I have is extreamly stable and maneuverable. Enjoyed the video.

Loved that moment where you just had to enjoy the presence of the bird because it was so close. Nature is awesome.

Prothonotary Warblers are indeed gorgeous, but Golden Swamp Warbler was a way better name, they never should have changed it. They will be down here on vacation in the tropics starting in September. Great Video! Do you secure your tripod/camera when you have the rig setup in the kayak?
