One of Data East's lesser-known coin-op releases, Psycho-Nics Oscar has one of the weirdest video game titles I can think of. It's a run-and-gun fusion of Gradius and Rygar, maybe with a light sprinkling of Xain'd Sleena for good measure.
It would be a completely inoccuous and forgettable game, save for the fact I reckon this game served as the inspiration for Turrican series, one of the most iconic series of platform shooters on the Commodore 64 and Amiga computers. There are some remarkable similarities between the design of the main character sprites in both games, and the level design and background artwork seem oddly familiar; even the jumping animations for the main sprite are the same!
If you're a fan of the Turrican games, this is definitely worth playing just to see the similarities!

Factor 5 acknowledged that Turrican was heavily influenced by Metroid and this game, which inspired many of the weapons, backgrounds and main character.

..and then they smoothed out animations and gameplay and also added one of the finest soundtracks in gaming history. Inspiration used perfectly here! ❤

@@Alchemy.RetrocomputingI would say the only thing I would compare Metroid to Turrican about, is Turrican having large, explorable levels that feel reminiscent of a Metroid-vania . But, I know Metroid to be far from the only game to do that during that time, in fact Jet Set Willy on the British computers, predates Metroid by years and it also is a Metroid-vania because the levels are all connected, you can go anywhere you want, and it basically is a Metroidvania in the same way that VVVVVV is. Point being, the only similiarity to Metroid that Turrican has, is an open world and Metroid didn’t invent that haha

There's one other really obvious piece of Metroid that was taken in turrican... the strange ability to turn into a small rolling object!

This is a great arcade game on my book, its pretty fair (though it has it's bullshit there and there) and it's music is memorable

2:03 wow I was about to say what is this "cheap" Turrican 2 copy and then I read that this came before. Even the music loosely reminds me of T2 level loader for a moment, here at 2:04, you can see enemies jumping down, just like in the first level of T2.. Stage 3 is even more like Turrican.
